Should You Still Learn to Code in 2026? An Honest Take

Learning to code can still pay off in 2026, but not as a guaranteed route to a developer job. Weigh the U.S. outlook, AI, entry-level competition and your own goals before investing.

Yes—learning to code can still be worthwhile in 2026, but it is not a shortcut to a guaranteed developer job. Programming remains useful for building and maintaining software, and U.S. projections still point to growth in software developer employment. At the same time, recent evidence suggests coding-related employment growth has slowed since 2022, while new graduates face a tougher entry-level market. The sensible approach is to learn fundamentals, build and test real projects, and use AI as a tool whose output you can judge. Whether the investment makes sense depends on your goal, budget, time, and local opportunities.

What the job outlook says—and what it does not

For U.S. readers, the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook projection available as of October 4, 2026 estimates software developer employment will grow 10% from 2025 to 2035. The BLS projects about 106,100 openings per year, on average, for the combined group of software developers, software quality assurance analysts, and testers. Many openings are expected to come from workers leaving or changing occupations, rather than from newly created positions alone. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

BLS connects expected demand to software for AI, the Internet of Things, robotics, security, and products such as connected devices and electric vehicles. These projections describe a broad labor-market outlook, not the odds that any particular learner will get hired.

There is also an earlier BLS projection cycle to keep distinct: a July 2026 summary projected 15.8% growth for software developers from 2024 to 2034, an increase of more than 267,000 jobs. That figure covers a different period and projection vintage from the newer 2025–35 estimate; the two should not be combined or treated as competing measurements of the same forecast. BLS cautions that its projection methods assume technology-related structural change follows historical patterns and are not designed to account for rapid change. That makes the numbers useful as a baseline, not a precise forecast of how quickly AI may reshape software work. BLS projection assumptions and limitations

Salary figures need the same context

The BLS-reported median annual wage for U.S. software developers was $135,980 in May 2025. It is a median across workers—not a starting salary, a guarantee, or a forecast of what someone new to programming will earn. Pay varies by industry and role, including between developers and QA analysts and testers. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

What AI changes about learning to code

AI tools can generate code, but software work is broader than producing lines of code. BLS describes developers as analyzing user needs, designing and developing programs, planning system components, maintaining, testing, and documenting software, and working with teams. QA analysts and testers plan tests, find defects and risks, and report usability and functionality issues. BLS role descriptions

That is why foundations matter even when an AI assistant can draft a snippet. You need enough understanding to inspect what it produced, test whether it behaves as intended, locate errors, and choose an appropriate design. This is practical guidance, not a measured promise that any particular skill guarantees hiring.

A 2026 preliminary Federal Reserve paper by Leland D. Crane and Paul E. Soto finds that employment in coding-intensive occupations continued to grow after ChatGPT appeared, but much more slowly than before 2022. The authors attribute the deceleration to an occupation-specific shock rather than exposure to slowing industries. The paper is preliminary research circulated for discussion: it describes observed aggregate patterns, not settled proof that AI alone caused every change or a reliable prediction of future hiring. Why a growing field can still be hard to enter

Long-run job projections and a difficult first job search can both be true. A field may add positions over a decade while inexperienced candidates compete for a limited number of entry-level openings at a particular time.

The Associated Press reported on September 24, 2026 that recent computer science and computer engineering graduates were facing a difficult job market and harder-to-find entry-level roles. An AP analysis put unemployment among those recent graduates at around 7.1%. That figure applies to the specified recent-graduate group; it is not the unemployment rate for all software developers or everyone who learns to program. The report’s examples of graduates adapting through AI skills, internships, projects, or work with smaller businesses illustrate individual paths, not typical outcomes. What to learn if you decide to start

For a software-work goal, aim to do more than follow tutorials or collect generated code. A useful sequence is to learn one language well enough to read, write, debug, and test modest programs, then apply it to projects that solve real problems and that you can explain.

  1. Learn the fundamentals. Practice breaking a problem into steps, reading code, writing small programs, debugging errors, and testing expected behavior.
  2. Build projects with a purpose. Choose a problem you can describe clearly. Keep track of your decisions and show how you tested the result, rather than presenting only code generated by a tool.
  3. Add skills that fit your work. Version control, relevant data structures, databases or APIs, security basics, documentation, and collaboration practices can matter depending on the type of software you want to build.
  4. Use AI critically. Ask it to explain or draft code if useful, but check the result, test edge cases, and make sure you can describe what the program does and why.

This is a practical learning sequence, not a source-backed guarantee of employability. The right projects and supporting skills depend on the roles or problems you are targeting.

Choose a learning route that fits your goal and runway

BLS says a bachelor’s degree is typical for software developer roles and some employers prefer a master’s degree; that does not mean every employer requires one. BLS education information A degree or formal study may suit some learners, while others may prefer structured courses, self-directed study, or a mix. The sources do not establish that a specific course or book improves job outcomes.

Before committing substantial money or time, compare the decision on these factors:

  • Your goal: A developer career, automation in your current profession, and personal projects have different definitions of success.
  • Your cost and runway: Include tuition, equipment, and study time, as well as how long you can train before you need income.
  • Evidence you can produce: Consider whether you can build projects, explain your choices, test your work, and gain experience through internships or collaboration.
  • Market fit: Check local or remote openings, your target sector and experience level, and the skills listed in current job descriptions.
  • Your fit with the work: Programming often involves breaking ambiguous problems into steps, revising solutions, and continuing to learn tools and practices.

Be especially cautious about a large tuition commitment if its case depends on a promise of a quick, high-paying job. Learning to automate tasks in an existing field or to make personal projects can be valuable even if you never become a full-time software developer.
