Which priest encounter are you in?
The title can refer to two separate quests. In Funeral Pyres, an Eternal Fire priest hires Geralt to burn corpses and conceal his fisstech dealings. In In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow, the decision concerns a young deacon and Reinald, and the mine contains evidence about a priest who stayed behind. The spare-or-kill question usually means the latter encounter.

How to save the deacon in In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow
- Explore the mine before resolving the conversation. Find the account of the priest who remained behind; the testament found there unlocks optional dialogue with Reinald.
- Raise the priest’s example. A walkthrough says the extra argument is available after discovering what happened in the mine.
- Defend the deacon. Say that the boy is innocent and that he does not need the Church to do good. This is the sympathetic dialogue path reported to persuade Reinald to spare him.
Dialogue order matters. The walkthrough warns that agreeing with Reinald without first bringing up the priest can lead to the deacon’s death. It describes conditional branches, not a guaranteed result regardless of earlier choices.

What happens if the deacon lives or dies?
The available walkthrough reports that Reinald gives Geralt armor and sword diagrams after the fight. It does not establish a better material reward for killing the deacon, nor does it document a broader lasting world-state consequence. Choose based on the outcome you want for the boy; the cited account does not support killing him as a way to obtain superior rewards.

If you meant the priest in Funeral Pyres
This is a different decision, involving whether to accept the priest’s bribe or refuse it after investigating his dealings. The quest reference says questioning Titus can reveal that the priest attacked him after their fisstech dealings. Learning that information affects the available dialogue and payment choices.

Why the confusion exists
Funeral Pyres is a secondary quest in Velen built around burning battlefield corpses; its priest uses Geralt to conceal evidence of his fisstech dealing. In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow was added with the next-gen update, Patch 4.0, according to the quest reference. Its mine exploration and optional dialogue about the forgotten priest are what make the deacon’s fate a separate choice.
