Not automatically. A break-even price is not a signal that Bitcoin has become safe or that selling is the best move. First work out what you would actually receive after costs, confirm the tax basis of the units you might sell, and then weigh your cash needs, investment rationale, and ability to tolerate further losses.
What does “break-even” mean for a Bitcoin sale?
The price you remember paying is not necessarily your true break-even point. A practical estimate should account for what you paid to acquire the Bitcoin and the costs you would incur to sell it. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the calculation is more specific: the IRS generally determines gain or loss by comparing adjusted basis with the amount realized, and disposition costs can affect the amount realized. See the IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions.

For a simple cash estimate, compare your expected sale proceeds after the platform’s fees with the amount you spent, including relevant acquisition costs. That estimate can help answer whether you would get back roughly the cash you put in. It is not a substitute for a tax calculation: the tax result depends on the particular units sold, their basis, and the transaction details.

How should you decide whether to sell?
Try to judge the position as it stands now, rather than treating your purchase price as a target the market must return to. Consider these questions before placing an order:
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Do you need the money soon? If selling would fund a near-term expense or restore an emergency reserve, that need may matter more than waiting for a nominal break-even price.
- Would you buy the same amount today? Imagine you held cash instead. Would you choose to put that amount into Bitcoin at its current price, given your finances and risk tolerance?
- Does your original reason for buying still hold? Separate a change in your investment rationale from the emotional relief of seeing the price return to your entry point.
- What further loss could you accept? Bitcoin can be volatile. Decide whether a larger decline would interfere with essential goals or prompt a rushed decision.
- Would a partial sale fit better? Selling all, selling part, or continuing to hold are different ways to manage the position. Tax-lot consequences can matter if you sell only some units.
- What would change your mind? Set a clear review rule tied to your own circumstances or investment rationale, rather than relying only on the price you originally paid.
These prompts can make your decision more deliberate, but they cannot determine which option is suitable for you or predict Bitcoin’s price.
What if Bitcoin falls after you reach break-even?
Break-even does not remove the risks of holding. Investor.gov’s Bitcoin and virtual currency investment alert describes volatility, regulatory uncertainty, security problems involving exchanges or wallets, and the absence of the same protections it describes for insured bank deposits and securities accounts. The alert is historical risk guidance, not a forecast of what Bitcoin will do next.

If you continue holding, include custody in your decision: know where your Bitcoin is held and what you would do if you lost access to an exchange account or wallet. If the possibility of a further loss would threaten your financial plans, that is relevant even if the market price has returned to your purchase price.

Could a sale near break-even still create a tax consequence?
Yes. A sale that looks close to even based on your overall average purchase price can still produce a gain or loss for tax purposes. The relevant calculation generally concerns the basis and amount realized for the units disposed of—not simply the portfolio’s headline average. Holding period can also affect whether a U.S. federal gain or loss is short-term or long-term.

United States: check basis, holding period, and records
The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. federal tax purposes, rather than as currency. Its digital asset guidance says records should cover purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions. For gain-or-loss calculations, relevant details include the asset type, transaction date and time, number of units, fair market value at the time of the transaction, and basis. Digital asset transactions must be reported whether or not they produce taxable gain or loss.
Before a partial sale, identify the units you plan to sell and check their acquisition dates and basis. IRS FAQs added December 15, 2025, describe specific-identification procedures for broker-custodied units sold after December 31, 2025: identification must be communicated to the broker by the time of sale, using identifiers the broker accepts, and supporting records must be kept. In the situations covered by the guidance, an earliest-acquired default applies when the required identification is not made. Check the current IRS FAQ and your broker’s procedures before relying on a planned identification.

UK rules are different. HM Revenue & Customs says that selling, exchanging, spending tokens on goods or services, and many gifts can count as disposals. Its guidance uses UK-specific pooling, same-day matching, and 30-day matching rules; see HMRC’s cryptoasset tax guidance. Do not apply U.S. basis or lot-selection explanations to a UK return.
