Usually, no. Claude Code is installed as a command-line application; Anthropic does not require reinstalling the server operating system. Reimage only if you need a clean host or are recovering from a system problem. Before proceeding, identify whether you control a cloud server through a provider panel or a physical machine you can boot from installation media—the rebuild process and what it preserves depend on that distinction.
Decide whether a reimage is actually needed
For an ordinary Claude Code setup, install the application on a supported host rather than rebuilding the operating system. If installation fails, first work through Anthropic’s installation and authentication troubleshooting; errors such as “command not found” or an unsupported Node.js version do not, by themselves, call for an OS reinstall.

A reimage can make sense when you deliberately want a clean server, need to recover a broken OS, or have another reason to replace the current system. It is destructive: saved files, installed software, and configuration may be lost. Do not begin until you understand the recovery path and have protected anything you need.

For example, one.com’s cloud-server redeployment instructions say redeploying replaces the server with a fresh OS and permanently deletes data, software, and configuration; that provider says its public IP addresses remain. Do not assume another provider behaves the same way. For physical Ubuntu installation, consult the current Ubuntu Server installation instructions, which cover using USB or DVD media.

Back up and prepare a recovery plan
Ubuntu advises backing up before installation and warns that partitioning can cause data loss. Provider-specific backup guarantees are not universal, so confirm exactly what a snapshot or backup contains and how it can be restored. A snapshot is not a substitute for verifying that your important files and configuration are recoverable.
- Copy repositories and uncommitted work you need to keep.
- Record service definitions, environment configuration, firewall rules, and other machine-specific settings.
- Confirm how you will regain SSH or console access after the rebuild.
- Make sure required credentials can be restored or re-entered securely; do not place secrets in an unprotected backup.
- Check which disks, attached volumes, IP addresses, and network settings the provider or installer will preserve.
Only after you have verified the backup and recovery plan should you start the reinstall.

Reinstall using the instructions for your machine
There is no safe universal reimage command for an unspecified server. On a cloud server, use the provider’s documented redeploy or reinstall workflow and select an image supported by your provider and intended use. On physical hardware, use the operating system’s current installation guide and carefully review the target disk and partition choices. Ubuntu Core’s documented install recovery mode removes existing user and system data, but that behavior applies to that product and mode—not to every Ubuntu Server reinstall.

Check the rebuilt host before installing Claude Code
Anthropic’s Claude Code setup documentation lists macOS 10.15+, Ubuntu 20.04+/Debian 10+, or Windows 10+ through WSL 1, WSL 2, or Git for Windows; at least 4 GB of RAM; Node.js 18+; and internet access. Requirements and installation methods can change, so check the live documentation before installing. Claude Code availability is also subject to Anthropic’s supported-country rules.

- Confirm the OS release and available RAM meet the current requirements.
- Check that the shell and Node.js version are available to the account that will run Claude Code.
- Verify DNS and outbound network access, including any corporate proxy or firewall requirements.
- Decide which account or organization will authenticate and which provider path it uses.
Install and verify Claude Code
Anthropic’s documented npm installation is a global install. Follow its current setup page for prerequisites and any changes to the command:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-codeAnthropic explicitly warns not to run sudo npm install -g. After installation, open a fresh shell if necessary and run the documented diagnostic:

claude doctorUse the result to inspect the installation. If the shell still cannot find claude, check whether npm’s global executable directory is on that user’s PATH and whether the install completed under the same account. If the diagnostic reports a runtime or permission issue, address that specific problem rather than reimaging again.

A rebuild may remove local credentials and network configuration, so authenticate again using the method provided for your account or organization. Anthropic lists Claude Console with active billing, Claude Pro or Max, and enterprise providers such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI as available paths; eligibility and setup depend on the account and provider.

For proxy environments, Anthropic documents the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables. Its current guidance says Claude Code does not support NO_PROXY or SOCKS proxies and identifies api.anthropic.com, statsig.anthropic.com, and sentry.io as network destinations to allow. Follow your organization’s security policy and check Anthropic’s corporate proxy and network configuration guidance; enterprise-provider integrations may have additional network requirements.
When a reimage is not the right fix
- “claude: command not found”: check PATH, the account used for installation, and whether you opened a new shell.
- Unsupported Node.js version: install a currently supported runtime version and retry the documented setup.
- Login or remote SSH callback trouble: use Anthropic’s troubleshooting steps and confirm the rebuilt host can reach the required services.
- Proxy or firewall errors: check the configured proxy variables and permitted destinations with your network administrator.
These installation and authentication errors are covered in Anthropic’s troubleshooting guide. Reimage only when the operating system itself needs replacement—not as a default response to a CLI setup problem.
