Should You Refresh Your PC? Weigh Performance, Security, and Sustainability Before AI Hype

Windows 10 support ending does not mean every PC must be replaced. Check security status, Windows 11 eligibility, performance needs, repair options, and lifecycle impact before deciding.

You do not need to replace a working PC just because Windows 10 support ended. First check whether your installed Windows edition is still supported, whether the computer can move to Windows 11, and whether it handles the work you actually do. Keep, repair, or upgrade when those options safely extend useful life; replace it when you cannot maintain a supported system or the hardware no longer meets your needs. An AI label alone is not a reason to buy.

What Windows 10’s end of support means

Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025. The computer does not stop working, but those editions no longer receive routine Windows security updates or technical support. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 apps may continue to work on unsupported Windows, though performance and reliability issues may arise over time. Special editions, including LTSC releases, can have different lifecycle dates, so check the exact edition rather than assuming every Windows 10 installation has the same deadline. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support FAQ and its product lifecycle pages provide the relevant details.

Losing routine security fixes changes the risk of continuing to use the PC, but it does not itself prove the hardware needs replacing. Your next step is to identify a supported route for the computer, not to shop automatically.

Choose among keeping, repairing, upgrading, and replacing

Use support status and real symptoms together. A sluggish browser, for example, may reflect too many startup apps or insufficient memory rather than a processor that needs replacing. Back up important files before an operating-system upgrade, repair, or device handoff.

Option When it makes sense What to check
Keep The PC runs your workload well and has a supported operating system, or a suitable short-term security bridge is available. Exact Windows edition and support status; security-update enrollment if using ESU; backup and recovery options.
Repair A replaceable part or fix can address the problem—for example, a failing battery, storage drive, or other model-specific component. Parts availability, repair cost, technician requirements, and whether the repair meaningfully extends usable life.
Upgrade The existing machine can run a supported Windows 11 installation, or a modest component or software change resolves the bottleneck. Windows 11 eligibility and any hardware constraints; application compatibility; backup before proceeding.
Replace The PC cannot run a supported OS and no suitable bridge is available, or it no longer meets your practical performance, reliability, or repair needs. Support horizon, task-specific performance, repairability, energy and environmental information, and secure retirement options.

Check Windows 11 eligibility

Use Windows Update or Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to see whether the specific computer is eligible. If it is, installing Windows 11 can extend the machine’s supported life without buying another PC. Check the official Windows 11 specifications and eligibility guidance; do not infer compatibility just from a computer’s age or brand.

Consider consumer Extended Security Updates only as a bridge

Microsoft offers consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for eligible PCs as a time-limited option. It is not a substitute for indefinite support or a reason to ignore eventual hardware and software needs. Check Microsoft’s current consumer ESU eligibility and enrollment information for the device and location before relying on it; enrollment terms and availability matter.

Coordinate organization-managed computers with IT

For a work or school PC managed by an organization, do not independently change its operating system, enroll it in consumer ESU, or retire it. Fleet support, licensing, security policy, and deployment schedules are managed centrally; contact the IT administrator.

Diagnose the performance problem before buying

Judge performance against the applications and tasks that matter to you. Note when delays occur—startup, opening large files, video calls, multitasking, or a particular application—and check for common bottlenecks before assuming the whole computer is obsolete.

  • CPU: Sustained processor saturation during the task can limit compute-heavy work.
  • Memory: If memory pressure is high while multitasking, closing background apps or adding memory—if the model allows it—may help.
  • Storage: A nearly full or failing drive can affect responsiveness; check drive health and available space before replacing the PC.
  • Battery: Short runtime or power-related performance limits may point to a battery issue rather than a need for a new computer.
  • Network or software: Slow cloud access, background processes, outdated apps, or malware can feel like a hardware problem. Diagnose those separately.

Compare candidate machines on the work you do, not a single headline specification. A model that excels at one benchmark may not improve your specific workload, and a repair or configuration change can sometimes address the actual bottleneck for less disruption.

Do not treat AI branding as a refresh requirement

Buy AI-capable hardware when a specific feature meets a real need—for example, a local AI workload with a defined privacy, connectivity, or speed requirement—and you can identify a measurable benefit. Otherwise, evaluate the PC as you would any other: by supported lifespan, performance in your applications, repair options, and total ownership considerations.

Microsoft reported that selected pre-production Copilot+ PCs were up to 3.5 times faster than selected five-year-old Windows PCs in a March 2026 Cinebench R26 multi-core comparison. Microsoft disclosed that results vary significantly with configuration and use. This is a vendor-run benchmark of selected systems, not evidence that everyday work is 3.5 times faster, nor proof that AI features themselves make a PC faster. Microsoft’s benchmark disclosure describes the comparison and its limits.

Include repair and lifecycle impact in the decision

A new computer brings manufacturing impacts as well as energy use during operation and eventual end-of-life handling. A replacement is not automatically the more sustainable choice. Consider whether repair can extend useful life, what a candidate’s energy and environmental disclosures say, and how the old machine will be reused or recycled.

Intel’s 2023 PC refresh guidance attributes more than 80% of a laptop’s lifecycle carbon footprint to manufacturing. That is Intel’s vendor guidance, not an independent industry-wide estimate or a universal calculation for every model. Intel also quotes its Sustainability Lead for Client Segments, Roberta Zouain: “We calculated that a single unplanned round trip to repair a laptop is the equivalent of two years of energy use for that same laptop in terms of greenhouse gas emission,”. This is an attributed vendor statement, not proof that every repair trip has that impact; weigh repair logistics alongside the expected life gained. Intel’s PC refresh guidance gives its context.

Repairability varies by exact model, not simply by whether a device is new or old. Microsoft’s 2025 environmental report says Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 each have 11+ replaceable components and an 8/10 iFixit repairability score. Those product-specific figures do not describe all PCs. The same report says 90.9% of servers and components were reused or recycled in FY24 and that product packaging recyclability was 94.8% in FY24; these figures refer to Microsoft’s operations and packaging, not the consumer PC sector as a whole. Microsoft’s environmental sustainability report contains the stated figures.

A practical checklist before a refresh

  1. Confirm the support situation. Check your Windows edition and its lifecycle; determine whether Windows 11 is available for your device or whether eligible consumer ESU is a short-term option.
  2. Name the actual problem. Record which task is slow or unreliable, then check CPU, memory, storage, battery, network, and software as relevant.
  3. Price a repair or upgrade. Verify that the part is serviceable and available, and that the fix would solve the bottleneck rather than merely postpone a larger issue.
  4. Compare replacement candidates on your workload. Look for a supported OS and firmware horizon, relevant app performance, model-specific repair information, and energy or environmental disclosures. Treat any AI capability as a feature to justify, not a purchasing requirement.
  5. Plan the old PC’s next step. Back up and securely erase personal data before resale, donation, trade-in, refurbishment, or recycling. Check the receiving program’s geography, eligibility, and terms; Microsoft recommends trade-in or recycling channels in its device recycling and trade-in guidance.

If you do replace the PC, choose for the applications you run and how long the candidate will remain supported and serviceable. There is no universal useful-life threshold or evidence here that an AI-branded model is the right choice for everyone.
