Yes, a modem can work inside a cabinet, but it may be a poor place for a device that also provides Wi-Fi. Cabinet walls can weaken wireless coverage, and an enclosed space can restrict airflow. If the device is a standalone modem, Wi-Fi reach is a separate issue; focus on ventilation, cable access and the model’s instructions.
First, identify what your “modem” does
A standalone modem connects your home to your internet service but does not provide Wi-Fi by itself. A modem-router or ISP gateway combines that function with a router that can broadcast Wi-Fi. Check the device label or manual, or look for Wi-Fi network details on the device or its setup materials.

If it is a standalone modem, putting it in a cabinet will not directly weaken Wi-Fi from a separate router. If it broadcasts Wi-Fi, the cabinet’s location and materials can affect wireless coverage as well as airflow.
What can change when it sits in a cabinet?
Wi-Fi may have less reach
Cabinet doors and surrounding materials can obstruct wireless signals. Linksys notes that wood, metal and thick materials can weaken Wi-Fi, while TP-Link identifies concrete structures and thick walls as obstacles that may limit range. TP-Link advises against placing a router inside a cabinet or behind walls because signal strength can fall: TP-Link placement guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
- APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
- GET THE FULL SPEED OF YOUR PLAN: DOCSIS 3.1 supports Gigabit+ cable internet plans, so large downloads finish faster and 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls can all run at once. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
- WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
- WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
The effect depends on the cabinet, device and home layout; a cabinet does not guarantee that Wi-Fi will stop working. However, a signal that reaches nearby devices may be less reliable in distant rooms or through multiple walls.
Cooling can be restricted
Wi-Fi performance and ventilation are separate concerns. An enclosed cabinet can limit airflow and trap heat, while blocked vents can interfere with a device’s ability to release heat. This does not mean every cabinet will cause overheating or damage. Keep the device’s vents clear and follow the manual for its specific model. Linksys discusses airflow and open placement in its router placement guidance; Rogers also advises keeping modem vents unobstructed in its modem placement guidance.

Where should you put it instead?
For a device that provides Wi-Fi, start with an open, central, elevated location. Keep it away from major obstructions and heat sources, and do not block its vents. Rogers recommends keeping the modem visible, upright and elevated; TP-Link similarly advises avoiding cabinets, walls and direct sunlight. The Archer VR400 manual notes that coverage varies with the environment and that obstacles such as concrete structures and thick walls may limit range. These are placement principles, not a guarantee of identical coverage in every home.

Rogers gives approximately 1,600 square feet or less as a rough reference for a centrally located modem, while noting that construction, interference and usage affect coverage. Treat this as Rogers’ qualified rule of thumb, not a universal Wi-Fi range estimate: Rogers modem placement guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If the device has to stay in the cabinet
- Choose an open or ventilated cabinet when possible.
- Keep the device’s intake and exhaust vents clear; do not stack warm electronics around it.
- Follow the exact model’s manual for its placement and operating requirements. Do not assume a universal clearance distance.
- If it provides Wi-Fi, check coverage in the rooms where you use it rather than judging from the cabinet itself.
How to tell whether the cabinet is the problem
- Identify whether the cabinet device is a standalone modem, a modem-router or a gateway. If a separate router supplies Wi-Fi, assess that router’s location too.
- Temporarily move the Wi-Fi device to an open, central location, keeping its vents unobstructed.
- Compare the connection in the same rooms and on the same devices. If Wi-Fi improves, placement is likely contributing to the weak coverage.
- Check wired service separately. A device connected by Ethernet can still have a working wired connection even when Wi-Fi coverage is poor.
When an access point or mesh system makes sense
If you cannot improve the device’s location and Wi-Fi is still weak where you need it, an additional access point or mesh setup may be an option. These address wireless coverage; they are not automatically required for a modem to provide wired internet. Before choosing one, check whether your existing device provides Wi-Fi, whether it supports the proposed setup, and whether wired backhaul is available and suitable for your home.
- Relocation: Best to try first when you can place the Wi-Fi device in a more open, central spot.
- Access point: Can add Wi-Fi coverage, but compatibility and connection to the existing network matter.
- Mesh system: May suit a layout where coverage is needed in several areas; placement and compatibility still matter.
Which remedy fits depends on coverage in the rooms that matter, the device’s ventilation needs, your home layout, setup options and installation effort. No one option is guaranteed to fix every coverage problem.
