The end of major Android-version upgrades is not the same as the end of security support. Samsung’s current Knox listing guarantees the S23 family Android updates through Android 17 and security maintenance releases through January 2028. Those are manufacturer support commitments; patch timing can vary by model, region, and carrier.
What “final Android update” does—and doesn’t—mean
A final major Android upgrade marks the point when a phone is no longer expected to receive a newer Android version. It does not automatically mean the phone stops receiving security updates, app updates, or working. Samsung’s support listing separates the Galaxy S23 family’s OS-update guarantee from its security-maintenance guarantee: Android 17 for the former, January 2028 for the latter. Samsung Knox’s supported-device listing is the source for those manufacturer guarantees.
Samsung’s Knox policy also says that devices running older Android versions are not automatically removed from Knox services, although Samsung teams will not provide issue support for those devices. That is a Knox service-support policy; it does not say that a consumer phone will stop booting or that every app will stop working when major Android upgrades end. Samsung Knox Documentation updated this policy on September 2, 2026.
What Samsung’s current support information says
Samsung’s Knox supported-device listing gives the Galaxy S23, S23+, and S23 Ultra an OS-update guarantee through Android 17 and a security-maintenance guarantee through January 2028. Samsung’s Mobile Security scope currently includes the S23 family among its monthly security-update models. These are Samsung’s stated support terms, not a guarantee that every carrier or regional variant will receive each patch on the same day.

For a concrete example of why the exact model matters, Samsung’s update history for the international Galaxy S23 SM-S911B lists build S911BXXSAFZI1, Android 16, a release date of September 30, 2026, and a security patch level of 2026-09-05. Samsung cautions that exact changes may differ by device model, country, and service provider. This record establishes the status of that model, not every Galaxy S23 variant. Samsung’s SM-S911B update history has the build record and caveat.
Samsung says selected devices receive monthly, quarterly, or biannual firmware updates, and that patch delivery timing varies by region and model. Some chipset-vendor patches may arrive in a later package. Its current scope page lists the S23 family in the monthly group, but the relevant status for an owner is the one applying to their specific device and market. See Samsung Mobile Security’s update scope and its security-update information.
How to decide whether to keep your S23
Keep using it if support and condition are still acceptable
Keeping the phone is reasonable when it continues to receive applicable security patches, runs the apps and services you need, and remains dependable in everyday use. Install available system and app updates, use a screen lock, and protect the accounts connected to the device. The support dates above are manufacturer commitments; they do not replace checking the phone’s actual update status.
Check your exact phone’s patch status
- Open Settings on the phone and check its software and security-update information, including the installed security patch level.
- Identify the exact model and market or carrier variant. Do not assume that the SM-S911B update history applies to a differently identified device.
- Compare the installed status with Samsung’s update information for that model and region. If the phone appears behind, check again for an available update and consult the relevant carrier or Samsung support channel.
Samsung’s update pages warn that schedules and contents can vary by model, country, and provider, so a date published for one variant is not a universal deadline for all S23 owners.

Plan a replacement when support, reliability, or requirements call for it
Start planning to replace the phone if its applicable security updates have stopped, it becomes unreliable, it no longer supports an essential app, or it fails a work or organizational security rule. If your workplace requires a currently supported device, follow that policy rather than assuming Samsung’s general consumer support listing meets it.
A newer supported phone is an option, not an automatic consequence of a major Android upgrade ending. Samsung currently lists the Galaxy S24 among monthly-update models, but that classification alone does not establish its price, availability, remaining support period, or value compared with other phones. Samsung’s update-scope listing documents the update category.

If you are weighing continued use against a replacement, compare the factors that affect your situation rather than treating Android version alone as the decision:
- Security coverage: the applicable update status and remaining support for the exact model and market.
- Reliability: whether the phone and its battery remain dependable for your daily use.
- Compatibility and rules: whether required apps work and whether your employer or organization permits the device.
- Replacement trade-off: the cost of a new phone and how much support remains for that specific replacement.
Samsung’s support tables may change, and firmware delivery can differ across variants. Recheck the manufacturer’s current listing when making a later decision.
