If you only need one work or school app on a personal Windows 11 PC, choose “No, this app only” when Windows offers that option. According to Microsoft’s support documentation, this signs you into that single app without adding the account to Windows Settings and without registering the PC in your organization’s directory. Adding the account to the device and accepting device management are separate choices, and each one gives your organization more reach. Read the prompt closely before you accept anything.
Three different things the prompt can ask you to accept
The sign-in prompt often blurs three distinct actions. Microsoft’s guidance treats them separately, and so should you.

“No, this app only”
This choice signs you into the app that is currently requesting the organizational account. Microsoft says the account is not added to the device and does not appear under Windows Settings accounts. The PC is not registered in your organization’s directory, and its details are not exposed there. Other apps on the PC do not gain access through this sign-in.
Adding the account to the device
If you add the account to the device, desktop and web apps that use that work or school account can use it for sign-in, often automatically. The PC is registered in the organization’s directory, where basic device information becomes visible. Background activity that uses the account can come from apps, Windows services, and scheduled tasks, so the account may be in use even when you are not actively working in a particular app.

Enrolling in device management
Depending on how your organization has set things up, a separate management screen may appear after account registration. Microsoft says management is not activated if you decline that screen. If you enroll, administrators gain the powers listed in the next section. Enrollment is a separate decision from adding the account, and declining it does not undo a registration you have already accepted.
What your organization can and cannot see
After a PC is registered, Microsoft lists the following device details as exposed in the organization’s directory:
- Device name
- Whether the device is enabled
- Operating system and version
- Join type
- Device owner’s name
- Device management configuration
- Security settings management
- Compliance status
- Registration date
- Last active time
Other users in the organization may be able to see this directory information. This list describes directory data only. It is not a statement that your organization can see every file, browser history item, or other piece of content on the PC. Microsoft’s page does not establish what your employer can see through other work applications you install separately, and it does not describe any organization’s retention practices. For those answers, check your organization’s bring-your-own-device (BYOD) or privacy notice, or ask its IT help desk.

What management enrollment allows administrators to do
Microsoft’s support material says that once you enroll, administrators can:
- Install applications
- Deploy and update software
- Configure device settings
- Enforce security policies
- Restrict access based on operating system
- Block personal devices
- Remove data from lost or stolen devices
Microsoft describes a device management solution as a way for “the IT department of your organization [to] manage security settings and applications on your personal or corporate device.” The practical consequence is that enrollment gives the organization meaningful control over settings, software, and some data actions on your personal machine. Ask IT specifically which of these actions it applies to personal devices, what data may be removed, and what happens to the PC when you leave the organization. A general Microsoft page cannot answer those organization-specific terms.
Compare your options
| Question | App only | Add account to the device | Enroll in device management |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which apps can use the account? | Only the app that requested sign-in | Desktop and web apps that use the work or school account | Not a sign-in scope; governs device administration |
| Does the PC appear in the organization’s directory? | No, according to Microsoft’s described flow | Yes, with the device details listed above | Included in the registration path when management is accepted |
| Is it visible in Windows Settings accounts? | No | Yes, under Access work or school | Not stated as a separate setting in Microsoft’s flow |
| What administrators can do | None through this sign-in | Directory visibility of device details | Install apps, deploy updates, configure settings, enforce security policies, restrict OS access, block personal devices, remove data from lost or stolen devices |
| Can you reverse it on the PC? | Sign out of the app; account is not on the device | Yes, through Access work or school > Disconnect | Declining the management screen prevents activation; removing a management setup after enrollment depends on your organization’s policy |
Whether any of these options is available to you depends on the organization. Microsoft states that personal-device access depends on whether the organization supports BYOD, so an employer that does not support personal devices may not offer the choices at all.

Decision path
- Decide whether you need one app or organization-wide access across desktop apps. App-only is the narrower option Microsoft documents.
- Read the prompt and identify which step you are on: account registration or the separate management screen.
- If you are asked to enroll the PC in management, contact IT first and confirm which policies and data actions apply to a personal device.
- If you accept the connection and later change your mind, disconnect it from the PC using the steps below.
How to remove a work or school account from Windows 11
Use this path to disconnect the account from the PC:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Access work or school.
- Select the work or school account you want to remove.
- Select Disconnect.
Microsoft says disconnecting removes the sign-in information and data for that account from this Windows device. It does not delete the work or school account itself, so your access on other devices and your organizational account remain intact.
If you no longer have the PC, Microsoft’s account-device guidance describes disabling the device through the account portal. This stops the device from authenticating to organizational resources. If you disable a device by mistake, you may need an administrator to register it again.

Limits of the available guidance
Microsoft’s Windows account-registration FAQ applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. It notes that Microsoft was rolling out a modernized Entra registration experience between November and December 2025, so the exact prompt wording you see may differ or change after rollout. The guidance reviewed for this article was accessed in October 2026. Microsoft’s pages do not establish what a specific employer or school requires, what agreements it applies to personal devices, or whether a separately installed work application collects information on its own. Treat Microsoft’s descriptions as a description of Windows behavior, and treat your organization’s written policy as the source of truth for what it will do with your device.
The Bottom Line
Choose “No, this app only” if one app is all you need, because it keeps the account off the device and out of the organization’s directory. Add the account or accept management only after your IT department confirms what it will apply to a personal PC, and remember that disconnecting from Windows does not delete the account itself.
