Yes—live video must be encoded and compressed to be practical to send over an internet connection. The goal is not to compress as much as possible: choose a supported format and bitrate that preserve acceptable picture quality, keep up with the action on screen, and fit a stable upload connection. Too little bitrate can make the picture visibly blocky or soft; too much for your connection can cause an unstable stream.
What “compressing” a live stream means
People use “compress video” to mean two different things: encoding a live camera or gameplay feed into a streamable format, and reducing the bitrate or file size of the video. Live streaming requires encoding. The practical choice is how to balance codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, visual quality, connection capacity, and the computer’s ability to encode in real time.

A more efficient codec may deliver comparable quality at a lower bitrate, or better quality at the same bitrate—but only if the platform accepts it and the playback path supports it. Check the destination’s current requirements before changing codecs. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison discusses codec trade-offs, while YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists the platform’s settings recommendations.
Pros of compression
It makes live transmission practical
Raw video is generally too demanding to send as a live stream. Encoding reduces the amount of data that must travel while producing a format the platform can ingest. The codec determines how much image information can be retained at a given bitrate.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
It can reduce bandwidth needs
Google says VP9 and HEVC can offer better compression than H.264, potentially allowing higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. Those gains are conditional: confirm that the platform accepts the codec and that viewer playback supports it. A more efficient codec is not automatically the safest choice for every stream.
It can give viewers more playback options
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Transcoding creates alternate renditions; it is separate from the encoding choices you make for your outgoing feed. Availability and behavior vary by service, so do not assume every platform offers the same viewer options. OBS explains the general concept in its transcoding overview.
It lets you trade computing effort against bandwidth
Encoder choices and presets balance processing load, bitrate, and image quality. Software encoding uses CPU resources; hardware encoding uses dedicated encoding hardware. Options such as x264 and NVIDIA NVENC have different capabilities, and neither is best in every setup. Twitch discusses encoder choices in its Broadcasting Guidelines.

Cons and trade-offs
Too much compression can damage the picture
When bitrate is too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and content, compression artifacts become more visible. Fast movement, fine textures, foliage, particles, and camera noise can be harder to encode cleanly than a mostly static slide or talking head. Judge settings with representative motion, not a still screen.
Encoding consumes resources
Real-time encoding has to keep pace with the video. If the encoder cannot do that, the stream may suffer even when the network is adequate. Compare whether your encoder keeps up, how much CPU or GPU it uses, and the resulting picture quality before changing hardware or buying an upgrade.
Excess bitrate can undermine delivery
A higher bitrate can improve quality only up to a point. If it exceeds what your connection can sustain reliably, delivery can become unstable. Twitch’s guidance cautions that higher bitrate can improve quality only so far, while OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and ingest server. See OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Codec support and transcoding differ by platform
Efficiency is useful only when the destination accepts the codec and viewers can play it. Viewer transcoding is also platform-dependent. YouTube describes automatic transcoding for live streams in its guidance, but do not assume another service—or every account on it—provides the same range of output renditions.

- Check the platform’s current ingest requirements. Confirm accepted codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate guidance, keyframe requirements, and rate control. YouTube currently recommends CBR in its encoder guidance; Twitch recommends CBR whenever possible. Consult YouTube’s settings page or Twitch’s guidelines for the destination you will use.
- Leave upload headroom. A speed test is only a starting point, not a guarantee of steady upload capacity throughout a broadcast. Do not set the stream to consume the full measured upload rate, especially on a shared or variable connection. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your connection and testing it.
- Match resolution and frame rate to the content and available bitrate. Fast motion and fine detail need more data than a static presentation at comparable settings. If bandwidth is limited, lowering resolution or frame rate can produce a cleaner result than forcing a high-resolution stream at an inadequate bitrate.
- Use a supported codec. Weigh compression efficiency against platform ingest and viewer compatibility. The newest or most efficient option is not automatically the right one for your audience.
- Test the real workload before going live. Include motion and audio similar to the actual broadcast, then check stream health and adjust. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar movement and audio; its guidance says, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Investigate dropped frames as a connection problem. Check the connection and route to the ingest server rather than assuming that changing the encoder alone will fix it. Lowering bitrate may help a constrained link, but it can also reduce image quality.
How to compare two settings or encoders
Compare viable options using the same representative content and destination. There is no single bitrate or encoder choice that is best for every resolution, frame rate, platform, or connection.
- Perceived image quality at the same bitrate.
- The bitrate needed to reach acceptable quality.
- CPU or GPU load, and whether encoding keeps pace in real time.
- Compatibility with the platform and viewer devices.
- Stability on the actual upload connection.
- Whether the platform transcodes the stream, and what viewer renditions it makes available.
Avoid blanket claims such as “hardware encoding is always worse” or “HEVC is always best.” Platform support and encoder generation matter. A dedicated encoder-capable graphics card can be one option if your existing system cannot handle its workload, but it is not a prerequisite for every streamer.

Does YouTube or Twitch compress your stream again?
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers. That means your outgoing feed may be converted into additional playback renditions; it does not remove the need to send a stable, properly encoded stream. OBS’s overview notes that transcoding varies among services. Check the destination’s current documentation rather than assuming Twitch or another platform offers the same viewer options as YouTube.
Common problems and fixes
The picture looks blocky during movement
Fast motion and fine detail may need more bitrate than your settings provide. Test the same kind of movement as the broadcast. If upload capacity is limited, try a lower resolution or frame rate rather than pushing bitrate beyond a stable connection.

The stream drops frames or disconnects intermittently
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and ingest server. Check connection stability and the ingest route, and test at a bitrate your connection can sustain. Its connection troubleshooting guide covers network-focused diagnosis.

The encoder cannot keep up
Real-time encoding may be overloading the CPU or GPU. Check encoder load and whether it keeps pace before raising bitrate or buying hardware. Test a different supported encoder or preset and compare both resource use and visual quality.
A codec setting is rejected or viewers have playback trouble
Confirm the destination’s current ingest support and consider the viewers’ playback path. If support is uncertain, use a codec the platform documents for your setup rather than choosing solely for compression efficiency.
