Usually, no. Swiping away every recent app is not a general speed or battery-saving routine. Apple says unnecessary force-closing can make an iPhone or iPad slower to use because reopening an app takes longer while it reloads its data. Google says Android manages memory and battery automatically, even when you leave apps open. Close an app when it is stuck; troubleshoot other causes when the whole phone feels slow.
Why routinely clearing recent apps can backfire
The app switcher is primarily for returning to or switching between apps, not a maintenance checklist. On iPhone and iPad, Apple warns that force-closing apps unnecessarily can slow the device: reopening a closed app takes longer because it must reload its data. On Android, Google says users do not need to close apps to prevent running out of memory or battery because Android manages those automatically.

That guidance does not mean every app is always inactive in the background, or that closing an app can never help. It means routine clearing is not a proven, universal way to make a phone faster or extend battery life. Neither source quantifies a speed or battery-life gain from app-closing habits.

When you should close an app
If an iPhone or iPad app is not responding
Apple recommends closing an app that is unresponsive. Open the app switcher, locate the app, then swipe up on its preview. On an iPhone or iPad without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause near the middle of the screen. On older models with a Home button, double-click the button to open the app switcher.

If an Android app needs to be dismissed
Open the recent-apps view, find the app, and swipe it away. Google also describes a Clear all option for eligible apps. The exact navigation can vary by device, and Google notes that some steps only work on Android 14 or later. Some apps, including Google Play services and system apps, cannot be stopped this way.
Google’s instructions describe ways to close apps, not a requirement to clear the list regularly. Use them when you have a reason to dismiss a particular app, rather than treating every recent app as a cause of sluggishness.

What to check if the whole phone is slow
On iPhone and iPad, Apple recommends checking several factors besides an unresponsive app:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Network conditions: A slow connection can make online tasks feel sluggish even when the phone itself is responsive.
- Available storage: Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB free to help avoid slowdowns. iOS and iPadOS manage storage automatically during installations and updates, but you can review what is taking space.
- Temperature: If the device is too hot or too cold, performance may be affected.
- Low Power Mode: Check whether it is enabled if performance seems different than usual.
- Battery health: Review the battery’s condition if the device’s performance has changed.
Storage cleanup is separate from managing recent apps. Offloading an app frees its storage while retaining its documents and data; deleting an app removes it and its related data. Choose based on whether you want to keep that data on the device.

What the advice means for battery life
Android’s consumer guidance says its memory and battery management works automatically; it does not promise that swiping away apps will improve battery life. Apple’s consumer guidance warns about the reopening cost of unnecessary force-closing, but does not attach a battery-saving figure to either habit. Avoid expecting a specific percentage of extra battery or speed from routinely clearing the app switcher.
Apps can use energy when they do intensive work or use features such as location and networking, as Apple explains in its developer documentation. That is context about app activity, not evidence that every app visible in a recent-apps list is draining the battery.
