1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most people, let Windows detect the time zone. Automatic selection works when the PC moves between time zones and Windows location services are available. Switch to manual selection when location is unavailable or restricted, or when the computer should stay on one specific zone wherever it is physically used.
What Windows offers
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both keep time-zone selection in one place: Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Microsoft documents two modes there: automatic selection, controlled by the Set time zone automatically switch, and a manual Time zone drop-down. The official instructions are published in Microsoft Support’s guide to time, date, and time zone settings in Windows.

How automatic detection works
Automatic time-zone selection depends on Windows location functionality. According to Microsoft’s location guidance, the location service can draw on GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points and routers, cell towers, the IP address, or a default location that you configure. Microsoft describes the location service as the feature that automatic time zone and Find my device both rely on.

Detection is only as good as the signals available. A laptop on a train with no Wi-Fi may have fewer inputs than one at a café, and a desktop with no Wi-Fi and no GPS depends on the IP address or on a default location. Microsoft’s guidance says a default location gives Windows and apps a location fallback. It does not guarantee accurate detection in every environment.

Manual or automatic: choosing by situation
| Situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop travels between time zones and Windows location is on | Automatic time-zone selection | Windows can update the selected zone from its location feature. (Microsoft Support, time and date settings guide; Microsoft location guidance) |
| Desktop with no useful location signal, or detection never completes | Manual selection, or a configured default location if that suits your setup | Microsoft documents both the manual drop-down and the default-location fallback. |
| Computer should stay on one zone regardless of where it is used | Manual selection | A fixed choice does not depend on detected location. This is a practical inference from the documented controls, not a statement from Microsoft. |
| Work-managed PC, or location settings missing or locked | Follow the administrator’s configuration, or ask IT | Microsoft notes that workplace-assigned devices may restrict location settings. |
The four factors that matter are whether you travel with the device, whether location services are available, whether you need a fixed zone, and whether an organization manages the machine. The Microsoft material does not establish that manual selection is more accurate or more private in general, so treat any blanket claim of that kind with caution.
How to change the setting
Turn automatic detection on
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn Set time zone automatically on.
Choose a zone manually
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn Set time zone automatically off.
- Select the correct zone from the Time zone menu.
- If the region observes daylight saving time and you want Windows to adjust clocks twice a year, check Adjust for daylight saving time automatically.
Daylight saving time is a separate control. Microsoft says it is set automatically when automatic time-zone selection is on. Once you switch to manual selection, the Adjust for daylight saving time automatically option is the one that governs DST, so check it after every manual change.

Location and privacy
You manage device and app location in Settings > Privacy & security > Location. Turning off the Windows location setting stops Windows and apps from getting device location through that service. Microsoft also cautions that some third-party apps may use other technologies, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a cellular modem, or GPS, to estimate location with varying accuracy. Turning off the Windows setting is a meaningful control, but it does not prevent every software component from inferring location.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft Support states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The PC still runs, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The time-zone controls described above appear in both versions, but the support status is a reason to plan an upgrade rather than to rely on Windows 10 for long-term use.

Keep automatic detection on if you carry a laptop between cities or countries and location services work for you. Choose a manual zone if the machine stays in one place, detection is unreliable, or you prefer location services to stay off. On a managed device, use the zone your administrator sets.
