Yes—if the refurbished laptop is a worthwhile discount on the exact configuration, has enough supported life left, and comes with clear condition, warranty, and return terms. A lower sticker price alone is not enough. Battery wear, older components, limited support, or a short return window can erase the savings. Compare the full cost and the risks with a capable new alternative before you buy.
What “refurbished” does—and does not—tell you
Refurbished generally means a seller or manufacturer has inspected a pre-owned device and may have repaired, cleaned, or reset it before resale. The process is not standardized: what is tested, what gets repaired, and what warranty applies depend on the seller. “Used” by itself does not promise inspection or repair. Dell, for example, describes its certified refurbished process as including testing, repairs when needed, reimaging, and a final inspection; that is Dell’s process, not a universal definition.

Also distinguish cosmetic condition from technical condition. A grade such as “excellent” or “good” is defined by the seller and primarily describes appearance; it does not, on its own, establish battery health, reliability, or remaining software support.

Compare the refurbished listing with a new laptop that can do the same work, not merely with a new model at a similar price. Record the exact model and configuration. Processor family names are not enough: an older Core i5 can differ substantially from a current Core i5. Check the full processor model and generation, memory, storage, display, ports, and performance for your workload.

| What to compare | Refurbished listing | New alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Performance and configuration | Exact CPU model, RAM, storage, screen, ports, and any upgrade limits. | Choose a configuration capable of the same work; compare specifications rather than price or processor-family label alone. |
| Software support | Verify operating-system eligibility and the model’s update horizon. | Check that the new model meets your software needs and expected support requirements. |
| Condition and power | Read the seller’s grade definition; check battery assurance, charger, and replacement options. | Review the included charger and warranty; a new battery is not a substitute for checking the full terms. |
| Protection | Identify who refurbished it, who handles warranty service, exclusions, and return terms. | Check the manufacturer or retailer warranty and return policy for that specific purchase. |
| Total price | Include any likely battery or charger replacement and other necessary costs. | Compare the payable price for an equivalent capability, not a higher-spec model you do not need. |
The refurbisher’s inventory may include both current-generation and previous-generation machines. Age and the specific configuration matter more than the refurbished label.
Check how long the laptop can meet your software needs
Support life is part of the price. A laptop that cannot run the operating system or applications you need may be poor value even if it is inexpensive. Check eligibility and update support for the exact model before buying, rather than assuming that a familiar brand or processor name guarantees future compatibility.
For Windows PCs, Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. If you are considering an older Windows laptop, check whether that particular PC meets Windows 11 requirements and whether it suits your software needs. For a Chromebook, check Google’s model-specific Auto Update Policy. The relevant support horizon depends on the model, so do not infer it from the year or appearance alone.

Price in battery condition and missing essentials
A used battery may provide less unplugged runtime than you need. Ask the seller for battery condition or a clear minimum they stand behind, and find out whether a replacement is available and what it would cost. There is no single battery-health percentage that makes every refurbished laptop a good or bad buy; the useful threshold depends on your work and how often you need to use the laptop away from a socket.
Confirm that the correct charger is included and that both it and the charging port work. Add the likely cost of any necessary replacement to the refurbished price before comparing it with a new machine.
Read the seller’s warranty, grade, and return terms
Check who performed the refurbishment and who is responsible if something goes wrong: the manufacturer, retailer, or another seller. Read the warranty length, covered components, exclusions, service process, and any return or shipping costs. A cosmetic grade is not a reliability guarantee, and a warranty does not necessarily cover every fault or battery condition.

Terms vary by product and region. For example, Microsoft’s US refurbished Surface page describes a 12-month hardware warranty and return-policy conditions; ASUS’s US refurbished-product terms illustrate that coverage can include exclusions. These examples do not establish a standard warranty for other products, sellers, or countries.
Consumer rights also depend on where and how you buy. Which?’s UK guidance describes a 14-day cancellation period for online retailer purchases under the Consumer Contracts Regulations and a 30-day right to reject faulty, unsuitable, or misdescribed goods under the Consumer Rights Act. Those periods are UK-specific, not universal. Elsewhere, check local consumer law as well as the seller’s written policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use this checklist before paying
- Identify the device: Record the exact model number and full processor model, then confirm the memory, storage, display, ports, and any upgrade limits.
- Check support: Verify operating-system eligibility and updates for that specific model, along with compatibility with the software you need.
- Clarify condition: Read the seller’s definition of its cosmetic grade. Ask what was tested or repaired and whether the battery has a stated condition or minimum.
- Confirm essentials: Check that the correct charger is included and that the charging port works. Look up battery replacement availability and cost.
- Understand your protection: Find out who backs the warranty, what it excludes, how service works, how long you have to return the laptop, and who pays return costs.
- Compare final prices: Add necessary replacement costs and compare the result with a new laptop that has comparable capability and suitable support.
Prefer listings that explain their testing, repairs, condition, and support terms clearly. If those details are missing, the uncertainty is part of the deal—not a reason to assume the laptop is in good shape.

When refurbished is the better fit
A refurbished model is more compelling when its configuration handles your workload, its support life fits your plans, and the seller provides enough protection to make the lower price worthwhile. Oliver Trebilcock, a Which? laptops expert and senior researcher, put it this way in Which?’s buying guide: “Yes – provided you choose your model carefully, you can get more for your money with a refurbished versus a new laptop. However, the age of the model is important.”
A new laptop may be the better choice if you depend on dependable unplugged runtime, need a longer or clearer support runway, or cannot absorb the inconvenience of a fault or return. There is no defensible universal discount percentage that makes every refurbished laptop worth buying; the answer turns on the exact listing and your needs.
