Buy now if your current PC is failing or you need a replacement soon for work, study, or gaming. Wait only if your computer still meets your needs and you have a concrete reason to hold off, such as a target price or a confirmed announcement that matters to your use. There is no dependable date when PCs will get cheaper: 2026 forecasts point to cost pressure on memory and storage, but they do not predict the checkout price of a particular computer in your market.
What do current PC price forecasts actually say?
They suggest a risk of higher costs, not a guarantee that every PC will rise in price or that buying today will save you money. Forecasts are market-wide estimates; your result depends on the model, retailer, configuration, and region.

| Source and date | What was reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Gartner, February 2026 | DRAM and SSD prices were forecast to rise by a combined 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025 levels; Gartner estimated that PC prices could rise by 17% as a result. | These are forecasts, not measured outcomes or a prediction for any particular PC. |
| Omdia, September 2026 | US PC shipments grew 1.0% in Q2 2026, while full-year US shipments were forecast to decline 10.7%. Omdia said some Q2 demand reflected buyers and retailers bringing purchases forward ahead of expected memory- and storage-related price increases. | This describes the US market and shipment volumes; it is not a local price quote. |
| IDC, 2026 | PC average selling prices were forecast to rise 18.3% in 2026. | This is a market projection, not a promised increase for every product or retailer. |
None of these figures establishes a specific future sale price, a reliable date for price relief, or a launch date for a new product generation. Treat waiting as a decision under uncertainty rather than a bet with guaranteed savings.

When is buying now the better choice?
- Your current computer is failing, unreliable, or preventing you from completing essential work or study.
- A game or application you need does not run acceptably, and you have found a suitable system within budget.
- Delaying has a real cost, such as lost work time or being unable to use required software.
- You have checked that a current offer is fair against recent prices and equivalent configurations, and the price is acceptable to you.
In these cases, compare systems that meet the need rather than holding out for an uncertain market change. A forecasted increase in memory and storage costs is a reason not to assume prices will fall, but it does not prove that a specific deal is good.

When does waiting make sense?
Waiting is more reasonable when your PC still handles your everyday tasks and the inconvenience of keeping it is low. Make the wait purposeful:
- Choose the configuration you actually want and track its local price.
- Set a target price or a date to reassess, rather than waiting indefinitely.
- Wait for a confirmed sale or an official product announcement only if it could change your decision.
- Weigh any possible savings or improved options against the inconvenience and risk of continuing with your current computer.
No dependable near-term launch calendar or universal price-relief date is established here. Do not delay a needed purchase solely on the assumption that a particular generation is about to arrive or that prices must drop.

Should you build a PC or buy a prebuilt?
Neither option is automatically cheaper. Compare the total cost of a self-build with a prebuilt system that has equivalent capability and support. Current buying coverage from TechRadar and TechSpot notes that component-price increases can make prebuilts competitive in some circumstances, but the result depends on the exact configuration and local offer.
| What to compare | Self-build | Prebuilt |
|---|---|---|
| Complete price | Add the CPU, motherboard, GPU, memory, storage, case, power supply, cooling, operating system, and any peripherals you need. | Check what is included in the quoted price, including the operating system and any required peripherals. |
| Performance and capacity | Check that the parts suit your workload and work together; include the memory and storage capacity you need now. | Check the exact CPU, GPU, memory, and storage rather than relying on a product name or headline specification. |
| Support and setup | Factor in assembly time and the support or warranty terms for the parts. | Check the system warranty and support terms, and consider the value of having it assembled. |
| Future changes | Check compatibility and whether your planned upgrades can use the selected parts. | Check upgrade options and compatibility; do not assume every component is easy to replace. |
If you already own compatible parts, reusing them may reduce the build cost. TechSpot also discusses starting with less memory or storage than you eventually want, or reusing storage, as possible budget tactics. Use those approaches only if the capacity is adequate for your workload; an under-specced system can undermine the reason for replacing your PC.

How do you compare buying now with waiting?
Compare the real value of using the PC now with the uncertain cost of waiting. For each system under consideration, check:
- Total local price: Use the price available where you will buy, including any items needed to make the computer usable.
- Workload fit: Judge performance against your actual applications, games, and tasks, not a generic “fast PC” label.
- Balance and capacity: Compare CPU and GPU suitability alongside memory and storage capacity.
- Ownership trade-offs: Consider upgrade compatibility, warranty and support, plus power use, noise, and size if these matter in your setup.
- Cost of delay: Account for inconvenience, lost time, or continued inability to do what you need on your current machine.
For build-versus-buy comparisons, use equivalent specifications and include assembly, operating-system, and support costs. For buy-now-versus-wait comparisons, use the current price you can actually pay and a concrete reason to delay; a market forecast alone cannot tell you what a specific future configuration will cost.
