Wait if you cannot find credible, recent performance evidence for hardware and settings close to yours—or if early tests show stutter or instability you would not accept. A benchmark is evidence about the tested PC, game build and settings, not a promise about every computer. If the available results do match your setup and you are comfortable with what they show, buying now can be reasonable. Steam’s refund policy may offer a limited fallback, but it is conditional and is not a performance guarantee.
Start with your PC and the experience you want
Before comparing reviews, note your graphics card (GPU), processor (CPU), memory, and display resolution. Decide which graphics settings you would actually use, including ray tracing if it matters to you. Also set your own tolerance: a competitive game, a slower single-player game and a game you want to play at maximum visual quality may not call for the same level of smoothness or compromise.

Use those details to judge how relevant a review is. A result from a high-end desktop GPU at 4K and ultra settings does not establish how a midrange laptop GPU will perform at 1080p. Likewise, a test at low settings may not answer whether the game runs acceptably at the quality level you prefer.

Check what the performance review actually tested
Look for enough information to reproduce the context of the result, not just a headline FPS figure. PC Gamer’s gaming performance analysis guide discusses testing across multiple GPUs and whether a built-in benchmark represents actual gameplay.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERED BY RTX 5070 12GB + RYZEN 7 9700X - The GeForce RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 graphics card pairs with an 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 9700X processor to drive smooth 1440p and 4K gameplay, giving this gaming PC the headroom for modern titles, streaming, and creative work.
- 32GB DDR5 6000MHz MEMORY & 1TB NVMe SSD - 32GB of high-speed DDR5 memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive deliver quick load times, smooth multitasking, and generous storage, keeping this prebuilt gaming desktop responsive under heavy workloads.
- BUILT-IN 11.3-INCH Smart DISPLAY - An integrated smart screen shows real-time CPU and GPU temperatures, usage, and weather while you play, adding a distinctive and functional touch to your battlestation.
- 850W 80+ GOLD POWER SUPPLY, 360MM LIQUID COOLING & WiFi 7 - An 850W 80 Plus Gold certified power supply provides stable, efficient power with headroom for future upgrades, while a 360mm AIO liquid cooler, WiFi 7, and an ARGB mid-tower case keep the Ryzen 7 CPU cool and connected in a clean build.
- READY TO PLAY OUT OF THE BOX - Arrives fully assembled and tested with Windows 11 Home pre-installed, so your prebuilt gaming computer is ready to set up in minutes. Assembled in the USA, and backed by a one-year limited warranty and lifetime free technical support.
- Hardware: GPU and CPU models, and whether the test used a desktop or laptop.
- Image quality: resolution, graphics preset and ray-tracing settings.
- Rendering features: whether DLSS, FSR or XeSS upscaling was enabled, which mode was used, and whether frame generation was on.
- Test method: a repeatable built-in benchmark, a controlled gameplay route or a brief subjective impression. A built-in test may not include the most demanding real-world scenes.
- Build context: game patch or build date and, when reported, driver version. An older test may describe a different version from the one available now.
If key conditions are missing, treat the result as less directly applicable to your PC. When several reviewers disagree, compare these conditions before deciding that one result is representative.
Read beyond average FPS
Average frames per second (FPS) is useful, but it can hide occasional long frames that appear as stutter or add input latency. Valve explains this limitation in its Steam in-game overlay performance monitor documentation. Check for 1% lows or frame-time graphs alongside the average, and read what reviewers say about traversal, demanding scenes, shader compilation stutter, major drops and crashes.
NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.7 user guide describes 1% low FPS as a measure that reflects stutter; a result closer to the average indicates more consistent performance. It is a comparison aid, not a universal pass/fail cutoff. What feels acceptable depends on the game, genre, display and player.

Separate generated FPS from the game’s base frame rate
Frame generation can increase the displayed output rate without raising the game’s underlying rendered frame rate to the same level. Steam’s performance monitor can show frame-generation FPS separately from actual game FPS. If a review gives only a generated total, look for the base rate and latency context before comparing it with a result that does not use frame generation. A higher generated number is not directly equivalent to the same base FPS.
Judge how much confidence to place in the evidence
Give more weight to independent reviews that disclose their systems, settings and test method—especially when several report similar issues on hardware comparable to yours. Be cautious about an unusually strong or weak result if the game build, scene or method is unclear. Player reports can point to problems worth checking, but hardware and settings vary; seek specifics rather than generalizing from an unspecific claim that the game runs well or poorly.
Check whether findings are current. A review based on an earlier patch may not describe today’s build, and a reported fix matters only if the reviewer or another credible source retested it. For a newly released game, early results may change after updates; do not assume that a future patch will resolve a problem.

Choose whether to buy, wait or skip
| Choice | It may fit when… |
|---|---|
| Buy now | Recent, relevant tests use hardware and settings close to yours; their consistency and qualitative reports meet your standards; and playing immediately is worth some remaining uncertainty. |
| Wait | Reliable tests are not available, existing reports describe serious instability, tested systems are substantially different from yours, or the game has just launched and early findings may change with patches. |
| Skip or delay longer | Current results suggest you would need settings reductions you dislike to get an acceptable experience, or unresolved issues outweigh your interest in playing now. |
Do not infer that you need a hardware upgrade from a review that did not test your configuration. Whether an upgrade makes sense depends on the specific game, your system, budget and acceptable settings.

Valve’s Steam refund policy generally allows a refund request within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Valve may consider requests outside those conditions, but an exception is not guaranteed. This policy applies to Steam; other PC storefronts have different rules, and regional rights may affect a transaction. Check the live terms that apply to your purchase.
Treat that window as limited risk management, not a free trial or a substitute for checking performance. Two hours may not reveal problems that occur later, and Valve does not promise to accept requests outside the standard conditions.
For an Early Access game, Steam describes the product as a work in progress and advises buyers to understand what they are purchasing and buy only if they are excited to play it in its current state. Steam’s refund policy still applies. Make your decision based on what the current build offers rather than assuming future optimization will arrive.
