If you already know the commander and cards you want—or plan to customize heavily—buy singles. Neither option is automatically cheaper: compare a precon’s current sealed price with the delivered cost of the same 100-card list, accounting for condition, shipping, taxes, and any included extras you value.
What you get with a preconstructed Commander deck
A Commander precon is a ready-to-play, 100-card deck. It can also include tokens and accessories or learning materials, but those extras vary by product, so check the exact listing and official product page rather than assuming every box contains the same things.

For example, Wizards of the Coast describes its Foundations Commander decks as ready-to-play 100-card products. Each has one traditional foil borderless face commander and 99 nonfoil cards, plus ten double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. Wizards published the decklists and lists an October 2, 2026 release date. The page names local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other Magic retailers as places to look; it does not establish current price or stock. Contents differ across releases. Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY Commander product page lists four 100-card decks, each with two foil commanders, 98 nonfoil cards, ten double-sided tokens, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, a reference card, and a deck box; its worldwide release date was June 13, 2025. Its Bloomburrow collecting page describes four 100-card decks with three traditional foil cards, a Collector Booster Sample Pack, ten double-sided tokens, a deck box, and a strategy insert. For a beginner-focused example, the Wizards Play Network’s 2022 Starter Commander Decks each included 100 cards, ten double-sided tokens, a deck box, punchout counters, a strategy insert, a Commander rules summary, and a reference card. Those are details of that older release—not a standard contents list for every current precon. See the Starter Commander Deck information.
When a precon is the better fit
- You want to play promptly. The deck is assembled, so you avoid finding and ordering each card before your first game.
- You want a complete example to learn from. A ready-made strategy can show how a deck’s cards work together.
- You need a straightforward starting point for a group. Buying complete decks gives players a defined place to begin, though it does not by itself establish that the decks are equally powerful.
- You like a published deck’s theme or strategy. Wizards describes its 2026 Foundations decks as five monocolor options with simple, straightforward strategies. Read the official list to confirm the actual commander and cards suit you.
Choose based on the specific deck, not just the word “precon.” A sealed product’s current price, availability, card list, and package contents are product- and seller-specific.

When buying singles makes more sense
- You have a specific commander or list in mind. Singles let you select the exact cards rather than starting from a prebuilt strategy.
- You already own some of the cards. You can buy only what is missing instead of paying for duplicates in a sealed deck.
- You want a different theme or substantial customization. A precon can be a starting point, but singles give you direct control over the finished list.
Wizards publishes official decklists, which makes it possible to inspect a precon before buying and decide whether to use it unchanged, modify it, or build something else. Its Foundations page also points readers to a guide for modifying a deck or building a new one.

There is no reliable universal price winner. Marketplace prices and stock change, and a valid comparison needs the same decklist, market, and assumptions on both sides. A marketplace search page alone does not show whether the complete list of singles costs less than a sealed copy.

- Choose one exact deck and market. Compare the same precon in the same country or region where you would buy it.
- Record the sealed product’s current total. Use a reputable seller’s price and include applicable shipping and taxes.
- Price the exact 100-card list as singles. Include delivery costs and taxes, and make clear whether you are matching the deck’s editions, languages, and card conditions.
- Account for package contents you would otherwise buy. Tokens, a deck box, a sample pack, or beginner materials may matter to you, but their presence and value depend on the product.
- Compare like with like. Note the date, seller or marketplace, region, and card-condition assumptions; listings can change after you check them.
If you already own cards from the list, calculate your personal cost for the missing singles as well as the full-list total. That answers a different question from comparing a sealed deck with every card bought from scratch.

If a precon has the commander or theme you want but not every card you would choose, use its official decklist to plan selective changes. Identify which cards you want to keep and which you intend to replace, then price the additions against your budget. This route combines a ready-made base with customization, but it is not automatically cheaper than either alternative; check the current cost of the product and the particular upgrades.
