Not by itself. AI-assisted test automation can help with bounded work such as drafting tests or maintaining scripts, but it is not proof that testers are obsolete or that generated tests are correct. Keep people responsible for test strategy, risk decisions, review, and release acceptance.
Here, “AI in test automation” means using AI to help test software. That is different from testing software that uses AI, which has its own challenges around probabilistic and non-deterministic behavior.

What AI can—and cannot—do in test automation
AI-assisted testing covers uses such as analyzing requirements, generating tests, automating them, and reporting results. A 2024 review of grey literature describes recurring effort in writing and maintaining automation scripts, and identifies test generation and self-healing scripts among common approaches. That describes reported practices, not proof that every tool works well or produces net savings.
AI may be useful when a task is specific and reviewable: for example, proposing test cases from a requirement or suggesting a repair to a brittle script. It does not remove the need to decide what matters to test, whether an assertion captures the intended behavior, or whether a failure is acceptable to ignore. Those remain human quality and risk decisions.

Do not confuse this topic with testing AI-based software. ISTQB’s CT-AI version 2.0 qualification focuses on testing AI systems, including machine-learning and generative-AI systems. Its CT-GenAI qualification instead covers applying generative AI to testing and associated risks: ISTQB CT-GenAI and ISTQB CT-AI.
Will AI replace software testers?
The available evidence does not establish that AI will replace testers. Nor does it provide a reliable broad statistic for adoption or average productivity gains. Test automation has long been one part of software verification: NIST’s 2021 developer-verification guidance includes automated testing among eleven techniques, citing consistency and reduced human effort as potential benefits. That is context for automation generally, not a recommendation to accept AI-generated tests without review: NISTIR 8397.
Two 2024 studies show why sweeping claims deserve caution. A multi-year grey-literature review examined more than 3,600 sources over five years, selected 342 documents, catalogued 100 AI-driven tools, and interviewed five testers. Those are counts describing its scope and method, not adoption or effectiveness metrics: Ricca, Marchetto, and Stocco, 2024. A separate systematic review covered 55 AI-based testing tools and empirically evaluated two tools on two open-source projects. Its scope does not support a general estimate of gains across teams: Garousi, Joy, and Keleş, 2024.

Are AI-generated tests reliable?
They can be useful proposals, but reliability depends on the task, the input, and the checks around the output. A plausible-looking test can encode the wrong requirement, assert the wrong result, rely on unsuitable data, or be unstable. A script repair that makes a test pass may conceal a product regression rather than fix the test.
ISTQB’s CT-GenAI syllabus covers hallucinations and reasoning errors, bias, privacy and security, environmental impact, and organizational adoption. Its version 1.1 update adds context on LLM-powered agents and AI-assisted testing while retaining the qualification’s overall scope: CT-GenAI syllabus information and ISTQB’s version 1.1 announcement.
- Check that each generated test corresponds to a real requirement and a meaningful risk.
- Review test data and assertions, not just whether the test runs.
- Run tests repeatedly where stability matters; investigate flaky results rather than treating them as acceptable noise.
- For generated repairs, inspect what changed and confirm that the repaired test still detects the behavior it was intended to catch.
- Keep the human review and release controls you would use for manually written tests.
What are the security and privacy risks?
Before using an AI feature, find out what it sends to a service and what may be retained: source code, prompts, test data, generated output, logs, or failure details. Do not submit secrets, personal information, or confidential code unless your organization’s policies and the tool’s terms permit it.

NIST describes AI security risks involving confidentiality, integrity, and availability of AI systems and their training and output data. It also notes that current frameworks do not comprehensively address some machine-learning attacks, including evasion and model extraction. Security guidance changes as the field develops, and no checklist can eliminate every risk: NIST AI security and resilience.

How to evaluate an AI testing feature safely
Start with one defined task rather than adopting a tool because it is labeled “AI.” For example, measure time spent authoring a particular kind of test, repairing brittle scripts, or triaging failures. The following is a practical evaluation process, not a published benchmark or a guarantee of improvement.
- Set a baseline. Record current effort and outcomes for a representative task, such as authoring tests for a feature or diagnosing a recurring automation failure.
- Choose a bounded pilot. Select representative tests and a specific use—generation, repair, visual testing, or another defined need. Keep scope small enough for reviewers to inspect every output.
- Preserve existing controls. Retain code review, test review, security checks, and release gates. Treat generated changes like other proposed code until they have been checked.
- Assess correctness and maintainability. Ask whether reviewers can understand the output, whether it tests the intended behavior, and whether it remains dependable as the product changes.
- Check failure diagnosis. Determine whether the tool explains a failure or simply alters a test until it passes. Confirm the underlying cause before accepting a repair.
- Review data handling and security. Establish what inputs and outputs leave your environment, who can access them, and whether use fits your policies.
- Count total effort. Include integration, training, human review, false or unstable results, and ongoing maintenance—not just the time spent generating a test.
- Compare with the baseline. Expand only if the pilot produces a result that matters to your team without weakening correctness, security, or review.
How to compare AI test-automation options
Use the same representative task and review criteria for each option. These are practical comparison axes, not a published scorecard.

ScreenshotNeo for screenshot-based checks
If your bounded testing task is capturing pages for visual checks or documentation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers from Yorker Media. It is an alternative to investigate for that specific job, not a replacement for evaluating AI test-generation tools. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo.

One GET request can return a screenshot. Create an API key, then try this cURL example; replace the target URL if needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
