What Shortwave Inbox Splits is (and what problem it solves)
Inbox Splits is a Shortwave Gmail organization feature that lets you segment incoming messages into separate sections. The goal is practical: reduce inbox chaos and make triage easier by grouping messages by intent (work requests, newsletters, receipts, support tickets, and so on).

Gmail already supports labels, filters, and tabs, but those tools tend to organize mail systemically. Inbox Splits is designed to change how you view and prioritize messages inside Shortwave—so the same messages can be easier to scan based on how you want to work today.

Who should use Inbox Splits
- High-volume users who regularly miss important emails because everything is mixed together.
- Teams and freelancers juggling multiple priorities (client work vs. internal updates vs. administrative email).
- People migrating from Gmail labels who want a faster visual system without fully rewriting their Gmail setup.
- Anyone doing inbox triage several times per day and wants more consistent scanning behavior.
Prerequisites before you start
To use Inbox Splits effectively, make sure you have the basics in place in both Shortwave and Gmail.
- Gmail connected in Shortwave (you should already see your mailbox content).
- At least one active inbox (Primary/All Mail behavior depends on your Gmail settings).
- Permissions: Shortwave needs access to read your messages in order to build split views.
- Reasonable expectations: splits are view-based. If a Gmail message isn’t eligible to appear in Shortwave’s inbox view, it can’t show in splits either.
How to enable Inbox Splits in Shortwave
Because UI labels can shift across Shortwave releases, follow the flow below and look for the same concepts: mailbox settings, inbox organization, or splits.
- Open Shortwave and make sure you’re signed in.
- Select your Gmail inbox in Shortwave (the mailbox where you want splits to apply).
- Open Settings (commonly via your profile icon or a gear icon).
- Find Inbox or Organization settings.
- Look for Inbox Splits and toggle it On.
- Confirm whether you want splits to apply to the current mailbox or all Gmail connections, if prompted.
- Wait for Shortwave to refresh. Your inbox should now show multiple split sections.
If you don’t see the Inbox Splits option, you may be on an older Shortwave version. Check for updates in the app’s update mechanism, then reload Shortwave.

Inbox Splits segments mail based on conditions (commonly sender, recipient, subject keywords, or other message attributes that Shortwave can detect from Gmail metadata). Messages that match a split rule appear in that split’s lane.
Rank #2
- Best reception, full range coverage including AM/FM, Longwave & Shortwave with Single Side Band
- PLL synthesized digital dual conversion receiver with unparallelled sensitivity & selectivity
- 4 & 5 selectable bandwidth filters on AM and SSB respectively plus single Side Band receiver with 10 Hz tuning step
- Alarm clock plus sleep timer from 0-120 minutes
- 1 Year USA warranty.
Practical implications:
- Matching determines visibility: if your rule is too narrow, you’ll see fewer messages.
- Overlapping rules are common: if two splits both match the same message, Shortwave may show it in multiple lanes depending on how the feature is implemented and how your rules are defined.
- State lives in your client: you’re organizing how you scan and act, not permanently changing Gmail’s message categories.
Create, edit, and manage splits
Once Inbox Splits is enabled, you can add more lanes so your inbox reflects your workflow. Aim for splits that support fast decisions: triage, reply, defer, or archive.
Create a new split
- In Shortwave, locate the Inbox Splits area where splits are listed.
- Select Create Split (or Add Split).
- Choose a name that reflects the intent, such as Client Requests or Receipts.
- Set the rule/filters. Use message attributes like sender domains, specific email addresses, or subject keywords.
- Decide where the split should pull from (for example, your primary view vs. all mail view, if that option exists in your UI).
- Save the split.
- Verify by waiting for a refresh, then confirm the new lane populates with expected messages.
Edit an existing split
- Find the split in the Inbox Splits list or lane header.
- Select Edit (often a pencil icon).
- Adjust the rule conditions.
- Save changes and wait for the refresh to apply.
Reorder and disable splits
Shortwave typically lets you prioritize which lanes show first. If your most important messages are buried, reorder splits so the high-priority lanes appear near the top.
- Reorder: drag-and-drop or use up/down controls if provided.
- Disable: toggle a split off if you want it temporarily inactive without deleting rules.
- Delete: remove splits you no longer use to reduce cognitive load.
Split types you can expect
Shortwave can’t “know” your intent, so splits are usually built from predictable signals. Common rule inputs include:
- Sender (specific addresses, domains, or mailing-list style senders).
- Recipient (useful if you have different aliases or teams).
- Subject keywords (e.g., “invoice”, “receipt”, “action required”).
- Message type signals (if available in the UI, such as newsletters vs. notifications).
- Other metadata exposed by Gmail (e.g., threading or label-derived signals, depending on integration).
Common split examples
Here are practical splits that usually pay off quickly. Adjust keywords/domains to match your environment.

- Security & Account: messages from your identity provider, banking, or password reset flows.
Best practices for a cleaner inbox
Inbox Splits works best when your rules are intentional. If you create 20 lanes, you’ll trade one kind of chaos for another.
- Start with 3–5 splits for two weeks. Expand only if you feel consistent gains.
- Use high-signal conditions: sender and subject keywords tend to be more stable than fragile wording.
- Keep rules simple. If a split requires complex logic you can’t explain in one sentence, it’s probably too complicated.
- Watch for drift: newsletters change subject lines; clients change domains; templates evolve. Revisit split rules monthly.
- Design for action: every split should correspond to a predictable next step (reply now, delegate, archive, or read later).
Troubleshooting when Inbox Splits doesn’t behave
If something looks wrong, don’t immediately rebuild your whole setup. Most issues fall into a few predictable categories.
Split not showing messages
Try these checks in order:
- Confirm the Gmail messages exist in Shortwave’s inbox scope. If Shortwave isn’t showing those messages in general, the split can’t find them.
- Loosen the rule: reduce subject keywords from 3 terms to 1, or widen sender filters to a domain.
- Check for exact-match pitfalls: some UIs treat input as partial or exact; if it’s strict, broaden your terms.
- Refresh/reload Shortwave after saving changes.
- Test with a known message: pick one email you believe should match and adjust the rule until it matches.
Messages appear in the wrong split
This usually happens when rules are too broad or overlapping. Fix it by tightening conditions.

Performance or refresh delays
Large mailboxes can take time to reflect rule changes. If you just created or edited a split:
- Wait a few minutes before concluding the rule is wrong.
- Refresh the page/app view.
- Avoid making multiple rule changes back-to-back; adjust one thing, then validate.
Inbox Splits vs Gmail labels and filters
Inbox Splits and Gmail labels/filters can both organize your inbox, but they solve different problems.
| Approach | Primary goal | Where it shows up | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortwave Inbox Splits | Faster scanning and triage in the Shortwave client | Shortwave inbox views/lane sections | Daily inbox workflows and action-based reading |
| Gmail labels + filters | Organize messages permanently inside Gmail | Gmail web/app views and search results | Long-term organization and cross-client consistency |
| Gmail categories/tabs | Quick separation of common message types | Gmail inbox layout | Basic separation without maintenance |
A strong setup is often hybrid: use Gmail labels/filters for durable classification, then use Inbox Splits to create the exact viewing lanes you want for daily triage.

Can I use Inbox Splits with multiple Gmail accounts?
If Shortwave is connected to multiple Gmail accounts, you can typically apply splits per mailbox. Confirm within the Inbox Splits settings for the specific account/lane you’re viewing.
Will Inbox Splits work on archived or filtered-out mail?
If Shortwave isn’t showing a message in your active inbox scope, it likely won’t appear in splits. Adjust the split rule and also ensure the message category is included in the view Shortwave is using.
What’s the best first split to create?
For most people, a split like Action Required (sender + subject keywords) is the fastest win. It gives you a daily lane where important emails cluster together.

Bottom Line
Shortwave Inbox Splits is a practical upgrade for anyone who feels their Gmail inbox is too mixed to scan efficiently. With a handful of intentional lanes—client requests, action required, receipts, and newsletters—you can triage faster and miss fewer important emails.
Start small, validate splits against a few known emails, and refine monthly. Once your rules match your real messaging patterns, Inbox Splits becomes a steady workflow tool rather than a one-time setup.
