ShortGeek’s current workflow starts with a script you have already written: it narrates the text, adds word-level captions, and renders a vertical MP4. It no longer imports an article or RSS feed, and “entirely on your own machine” needs a qualification: rendering stays local, but the default Edge voice sends narration text to Microsoft’s speech service. ShortGeek 2.0.1 was released on 26 September 2026, according to the product page.
What ShortGeek does now
ShortGeek is a Windows desktop app for turning a prepared script into a narrated, captioned vertical video. The current New Short workflow is paste-script-only: it does not write or condense the script, and article, topic-prompt, WordPress, and RSS import routes were removed in version 2.0.0 because they did not reliably produce usable scripts.

The basic workflow is to paste your finished text, select a voice and visual treatment, then render the video. You can use built-in code-drawn backgrounds, attach a screenshot to a beat, or provide your own MP4 background clips. The app offers three caption styles, a render queue, and a local library with video previews.

What you get in the rendered video
The product page documents an MP4 output at 1080×1920 with word-level captions. ShortGeek creates the visuals using its built-in code-drawn backgrounds or assets you supply; it does not generate pictures with AI. A screenshot or video clip is optional rather than required.

The app does not publish the finished file for you. You upload it yourself to TikTok, YouTube, or another platform.
Does the script stay on your computer?
Not with every voice option. Rendering and the resulting video remain on your computer, but the default Edge Neural voice is an online service: ShortGeek sends the narration text to Microsoft’s speech service, which returns audio and word timing.

Offline voice
ShortGeek’s offline voice sends no text to an external service. On first use, it may download a voice model of about 120 MB from GitHub; that download does not contain your script. Choose this option if keeping narration text on the computer is important.
Optional ElevenLabs voice
ElevenLabs is available if you supply an API key and select that service. In that case, narration text is sent to ElevenLabs. The basic script, voice, and built-in-background workflow does not require an API key.

Files, settings, and older versions
Locally attached screenshots are not uploaded. If you use a screenshot provided as a web link, ShortGeek downloads it from that address. Settings, the video library, cached audio, and downloaded voice models are stored in local application-data folders and remain there after uninstalling unless you delete them separately. The privacy page says versions 2.0.0 and later do not contact Anthropic or OpenAI; optional script polishing belonged to the removed 1.x workflow.

Cost, system requirements, and installation
ShortGeek is freeware. The product page says there is no subscription, credits system, watermark, or required API key for the basic workflow. It runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and requires standard-user rights. The roughly 94 MB self-contained installer includes Python and FFmpeg, so you do not need to install those separately.

Who is ShortGeek a good fit for?
ShortGeek suits someone who already has a short script and wants a simple way to create a vertical, narrated, captioned video on Windows. It is less suited to someone looking for an app that finds articles, writes a script, edits a full video project, or posts directly to social platforms.
The important choice is the voice: use Edge Neural for its online narration workflow, or the offline voice when the text should remain on the computer. ShortGeek’s developer, Andrew Armstrong, described it as “an assistant, not a replacement for editing” in the launch post. That remains a useful way to think about the output: review the video and make any editorial changes before publishing.
The product documentation does not establish a speed, accuracy, or creator-outcome statistic, so there is no sound basis for promising a particular render time or result.
