Shopify Theme Editor Settings to Check Before Using AI to Redesign Your Store

A practical preflight checklist for backing up a Shopify theme and checking its settings, shared sections, app integrations, market context, and previews before an AI-assisted redesign.

Before asking Shopify’s built-in AI assistance or another AI tool to redesign your store, duplicate the live theme, record its current settings, and identify which templates, markets, and integrations the proposed changes could affect. Then review the result in the theme editor’s preview before saving. Available controls vary by theme and its architecture or version, so treat this as a preflight checklist—not a promise that every setting appears in every store.

1. Duplicate the theme and note what you are changing

In Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes and duplicate the theme before editing. Keep the original available as a fallback; if the redesign goes in an unwanted direction, you can discard the working copy and start again. Shopify recommends duplicating a theme before customization: Shopify’s theme customization guidance.

Record the theme’s name and whether it is the published theme or a draft. Also note its architecture or version and where support comes from—for example, the theme developer. Shopify’s theme settings and sections vary by theme. If the editor does not offer the change you need, code editing may be required; Shopify suggests working with someone comfortable with HTML, CSS, and Liquid, contacting the theme developer, or hiring a Shopify Partner.

2. Capture theme-wide settings before requesting a redesign

Open the theme editor and inventory the settings that can shape more than one page. The exact controls and menu labels depend on the theme. Shopify documents theme settings such as colors, typography, layout, animations, visual elements, social media, search, currency formatting, cart behavior, and custom CSS. Applying a theme style can change current settings, including colors and typography, so record the existing state before switching styles. See Shopify’s theme settings guide.

  • Brand and type: logo, color scheme or palette, fonts, and type scale.
  • Layout: page width, spacing, and the arrangement of content.
  • Interactions and components: animation and hover behavior, buttons, variant pills, product, collection, and blog cards, media, dropdowns, and pop-ups.
  • Store behavior: search behavior, currency format, and cart type.
  • Custom CSS: record any existing rules and what they are meant to change. CSS entered in theme settings affects online store pages but not checkout.

Some current theme settings documentation gives layout controls such as page width from 1000 px to 1600 px, a 1600 px default, up to 100 px between template sections, and up to 40 px for grid row and column spacing. These are documented control ranges, not recommended design targets, and they are not universal across themes.

3. Identify the templates and shared sections in scope

The editor displays sections and blocks for the selected template, and lets you switch templates and markets. Before requesting or applying changes, list the pages that matter to the redesign: for example, the homepage, product pages, collection pages, cart, and any other template customers use. A change made to one template is not necessarily a store-wide change.

Check the header and footer section groups separately. Shopify documents these groups as shared across online store pages, so a change there can affect many templates. Custom Liquid or an app element placed in a shared header or footer can also appear across those pages. Available sections and blocks depend on the theme and its version. See Shopify’s guide to customizing sections and its overview of sections and blocks.

4. Inventory apps, app blocks, and embeds

Check both app blocks and app embeds in the theme editor. App blocks can be repositioned, but they are available only in compatible themes, sections, and page types. App embeds may add customer-facing overlays such as chat bubbles, or load code that customers do not see, such as analytics or tracking. Shopify explains these integration types in its guide to extending a theme with apps.

Keep a list of enabled apps, where each one appears, and any related settings that matter to the storefront. Shopify warns that when the published theme changes, apps installed for the theme need to be reactivated in the new theme. After the redesign, check each integration and its settings rather than assuming it carried over unchanged.

5. Confirm the market and customer context

Before changing a setting, check whether the editor is showing the store default or a particular market. Shopify says changes made at the store default generally apply to all markets unless that setting already has a market-specific customization. A market override can be reset to inherit from its parent; resetting an entire template or section group also restores the inherited section and block order. Shopify describes these behaviors in its market-specific theme guide.

Market-specific theme customization depends on theme compatibility and plan requirements. Shopify’s contextualization documentation says customer-type customizations for B2B or D2C require Shopify Plus, while contextual storefront customizations by market are available on Advanced and higher. Check the plan and current admin interface before relying on those options, since plan terms and editor labels can change. Shopify also documents customization for up to 250 markets and inheritance through five levels of submarket depth; these limits matter mainly for stores with complex market structures. See Shopify’s market and B2B contextualization guide.

6. Preview the redesign in the contexts customers use

Use the editor preview to review the proposed changes before saving. Shopify documents a mobile preview toggle, a live-updating preview, and undo and redo controls for unsaved changes in its theme editor features overview and theme editor guide.

  1. Select each relevant template and market, then review the preview—not only the homepage.
  2. Switch to mobile preview and check whether the same content, navigation, and controls remain usable in the narrower layout.
  3. Follow key customer paths in the preview: choose product variants, use add-to-cart, inspect the cart, navigate the store, try signup forms, and check app-driven interfaces such as chat where present.
  4. Use undo or redo for unsaved editor changes as needed. Save only after reviewing the intended templates and contexts.

The preview and manual checks are review aids; they are not evidence that a redesign will improve sales, conversion, or usability. The Shopify documentation cited here explains editor controls and safeguards, not AI redesign outcomes.
