Build a dropdown in Shopify’s menu editor
-
In Shopify admin, go to Content > Menus, then open your main menu.

Choose an existing top-level menu item to serve as the dropdown header, or add a new item. If customers should use the header only to open the dropdown, Shopify’s instructions say to set its link to
#. This is not a useful destination page. If the header represents a category customers should visit, add that category page as a separate submenu link.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Add each submenu item with a clear label and a destination, such as an existing collection or page. Create the destination first if it does not already exist.

Drag each submenu item below the intended header until it is indented, then save the menu. Nesting—not a special dropdown toggle—establishes the parent-and-child relationship in the menu.
Shopify’s desktop instructions and mobile-app workflow both use nested menu items to create dropdowns. See Shopify’s drop-down menu setup guide.

Check the dropdown in your theme
A saved nested menu does not guarantee that every storefront will display it identically. Shopify says menus can look different across themes; most themes support up to two levels of nested dropdowns. Its menu overview says all Online Store 2.0 themes support multilevel navigation, while older sectioned themes might need updates. Check the guidance for your theme and preview the storefront at desktop and mobile widths before publishing the navigation.

Shopify describes dropdown headers in most themes as buttons that expand the submenu, rather than links that both navigate and open a dropdown. That behavior can be clearer for assistive-technology users. If the category itself needs a landing page, include it as a submenu destination instead of relying on the header to do two jobs. See Shopify’s menu overview.

If submenu links do not appear
-
Check the nesting: Make sure each child link is visibly indented beneath the intended top-level item, then save again.
-
Check the assigned menu: In your theme’s header settings, verify that the storefront is using the menu you edited.
-
Check theme support: Test the menu in your current theme and review its guidance, especially if the store uses an older theme or needs more nesting levels.

Check other menu controls: A navigation app or custom theme code may change or interfere with the menu’s behavior.
-
Consider older-store issues: Shopify notes that some older stores may need menus recreated using the current nested format, or support if nested navigation is blocked.
When the built-in editor is not enough
For ordinary grouped navigation, start with Shopify’s menu editor. If your theme cannot provide the nesting or display behavior you need, a Shopify Partner or theme developer can assess a code change or another theme-specific solution. The appropriate option depends on the required nesting, desktop and mobile behavior, and theme compatibility; Shopify outlines the support route in its menu overview.
Can you use a dropdown in the footer?
Shopify’s documentation is not consistent on footer dropdown behavior: its setup guide says footer menus can display only top-level items, but also describes optional nesting for footer menus. Do not assume a nested footer menu will appear as a dropdown. Test it in your theme and consult that theme’s current guidance if footer navigation matters.
