Shopify Canvas is a new visual workspace that lets merchants create or edit an online-store theme by describing changes to Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent. You can also manipulate page elements yourself, edit blocks, settings and text, move between pages, and inspect how the real store behaves at different screen sizes. Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, and said it would roll out over the following days.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is Shopify’s visual design surface for building and editing store themes with Sidekick. Instead of starting with a blank theme editor or a developer’s codebase, a merchant can describe the desired storefront in ordinary language. Sidekick then creates or changes the theme inside Canvas.

The workspace is not limited to chat. Shopify says merchants can click elements directly and edit blocks, settings and text themselves. That combination gives you conversational generation for broad changes and conventional visual control for precise adjustments.

How to access Canvas in Shopify
- Open Shopify Admin and go to the store’s Themes page.
- Launch Canvas from the Themes page when it is available for the store.
- Describe the store or the design change you want Sidekick to make.
- Review the generated result, then select elements in the visual workspace to adjust blocks, settings or text manually.
- Move between pages and inspect the design at different viewport sizes before deciding whether it is ready for your normal Shopify theme workflow.
Shopify said on October 1 that Canvas was rolling out over the coming days. The announcement and current Help Center documentation do not establish a universal launch time for every store, country or subscription plan, so a missing Canvas option may simply mean the rollout has not reached that store.

What can you build or change?
Generate a theme from a description
Tell Sidekick what kind of storefront you want—such as the visual direction, page structure or merchandising emphasis—and Canvas can use that description to create a theme.
Refine individual page elements
You can select elements directly and change blocks, settings and text without restating the entire brief to the AI agent.
Work across pages
Canvas lets you move through the store’s pages while keeping the visual workspace available, making it possible to check whether a design change makes sense beyond the homepage.

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
Zoom in for detail
The interface supports zooming so you can inspect details rather than accepting a generated layout at a distant overview.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy rendering the real store code matters
TechCrunch reported that Canvas renders the real code behind the store rather than showing only a static mock-up. That distinction matters because a screenshot can look correct while the underlying page interactions fail.
- Interactivity: you can test whether controls and other interactive elements behave as intended.
- Animation: motion can be evaluated in the rendered page instead of inferred from a still preview.
- Responsive layouts: you can view the page at different screen sizes and catch problems that appear only on narrower or wider displays.
This does not mean the AI makes every design decision correctly. It means the review happens against a functioning theme representation, giving you more useful feedback before the storefront is used by customers.

Canvas compared with a conventional theme editor or developer build
| Consideration | Shopify Canvas | Conventional theme editor | Developer-led build |
|---|---|---|---|
| How changes begin | Natural-language requests to Sidekick, followed by visual edits | Manual configuration of the controls provided by the theme | Written or modified by a developer in theme code |
| Visual control | Direct manipulation of elements plus block, setting and text editing | Control depends on the theme’s exposed sections and settings | Broadest control when the developer can change the code and architecture |
| Interactivity and responsive review | Renders the real store code; TechCrunch reports support for testing interaction, animation and different screen sizes | Depends on the editor’s preview and the theme’s available testing tools | Can be tested through the developer’s chosen workflow |
| Coding required to start | Shopify positions it for merchants regardless of coding experience | Usually no coding for exposed settings, but custom changes may require it | Requires developer knowledge or a hired developer |
| Theme and app-extension compatibility | Not stated in Shopify’s launch announcement or current Help Center description; verify the specific theme and apps | Depends on the theme and installed apps | Depends on implementation choices and the extension APIs being used |
| Price and plan eligibility | Final pricing, plan limits and eligibility were not stated in the available launch materials | Varies by Shopify plan, theme and app | Includes whatever development cost the project requires |
Canvas therefore sits between a purely manual editor and a bespoke engineering project: it lowers the barrier to producing a custom-looking theme while retaining hands-on visual control. It is not evidence that every specialized requirement can be handled without code.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to know how to code?
No, not to begin. Shopify’s launch framing is aimed at entrepreneurs with or without design experience, coding skills or a large budget. A merchant can describe a desired result, inspect what Canvas creates and make direct edits to the visible blocks, settings and text.
Recommended Free Tools
Coding or developer help can still be useful when the store needs behavior outside the controls Canvas exposes, unusual integrations, complex app extensions, or a long-term theme architecture that must be maintained by a technical team. Canvas reduces the amount of code needed for an initial build; it does not establish that coding is unnecessary for every customization.

What Shopify has not yet specified
The launch information confirms the core workflow but leaves several practical questions open:
- Which Shopify plans include Canvas and whether usage limits apply.
- Whether Canvas carries a separate charge.
- Exactly which countries and stores receive access during the rollout.
- How every existing theme, app embed and theme extension behaves after a Canvas-generated change.
- What controls exist for versioning, rollback and collaboration beyond the normal Shopify theme workflow.
Check the Themes page and Shopify’s current Canvas documentation for the store-specific answer before planning a launch around the feature.
The practical takeaway
Canvas gives Shopify merchants a way to move from a plain-language idea to a working theme without beginning in code. Its most meaningful distinction is the combination of Sidekick-generated changes, direct visual editing and a rendered view of the underlying store code. That makes it promising for fast iteration, while compatibility, plan access and advanced customization still need to be confirmed for each store.
