To avoid scams and disappointing products on Amazon, check the seller and listing—not just the star rating—before you buy. Compare the full price, item details, condition, shipping estimate, return terms, and review patterns. Treat any warning sign as a reason to investigate, not proof of fraud: Amazon’s rules prohibit counterfeit goods and certain review manipulation, but those rules do not mean Amazon has personally verified every listing.
How do I know if an Amazon seller is legit?
Check the seller and the specific offer alongside the product page. Open the seller’s profile and look at recent feedback and comments rather than relying on an overall score alone. Read the listing’s contact information, shipping charges, return rules, and stated delivery estimate. Compare those details with what the product page promises.

Inspect the description and photos closely. Make sure the condition—new, used, refurbished, or another stated category—matches what you intend to buy. Confirm that the seller’s offer is for the exact model, size, quantity, and configuration you expect. A listing can be for a genuine product but still be a poor fit if its condition or included accessories differ from your expectations.

Amazon’s US policy says products offered for sale must be authentic and prohibits counterfeit products. That is a seller requirement, not a guarantee that Amazon has individually authenticated the item in every listing. See Amazon’s Anti-Counterfeiting Policy.

An HTTPS connection only indicates that the connection is encrypted; it does not establish that a seller or website is legitimate. The FTC recommends checking the marketplace, seller, and item before purchasing. Read its online marketplace guidance.
Are Amazon reviews real?
Stars are a starting point, not a verdict. Read a range of recent reviews, including critical ones, and look for repeated details about the product’s performance, condition, or fit. Check whether reviews arrived in an unusual burst over a short period and, where available, whether reviewers have written about other products. Compare review evidence on other sources when useful.

These are clues to weigh, not a reliable test for identifying a fake review. The FTC warns that fake reviews can be positive or negative and that appearance alone may not reveal whether a review is genuine. Amazon’s review policy prohibits practices such as compensating sellers’ reviewers, offering incentives in exchange for reviews, and tying benefits to positive reviews or review changes. Be cautious if a seller offers a refund or another benefit in exchange for a particular review or a changed review. See the FTC’s review-evaluation guidance and Amazon’s review-policy text.
How do I compare two Amazon listings?

Be especially careful when an expensive item is offered at a very low price. The FTC says this may indicate a fake, but a low price by itself does not prove counterfeiting. Check the seller, description, photos, condition, shipping, and total cost before deciding. The FTC’s marketplace guidance explains what to examine.
How do I avoid counterfeit products on Amazon?
Read the product description and condition, compare photos with the item you intend to buy, and review the seller’s recent feedback. Check that the model and included components match the manufacturer’s description, and treat an unexpectedly low price as a prompt to look more closely—not as a finding on its own. Amazon prohibits counterfeit items under its US Anti-Counterfeiting Policy; that rule does not authenticate an individual offer for you.

What should I do if an Amazon order never arrives or is not as described?
Keep the order on Amazon and use its order and support process. The FTC advises against paying outside a marketplace’s payment system because doing so can remove marketplace protections. Save the listing, order confirmation, receipt, messages, return terms, and delivery information so you can refer to the details of the transaction.

Eligibility depends on the issue, purchase type, required steps, and applicable deadlines; some scenarios require contacting the seller first and waiting, and some eligible requests must be made when the latest possible delivery date is 90 days or less. Check the current A-to-z Guarantee policy for the rules that apply to your order rather than assuming every Amazon purchase is covered.

If something goes wrong, contact the seller and Amazon through the relevant order process, check the applicable return, refund, or claim deadlines, and keep records of the response. If you paid by another method or believe you were charged improperly, consider the relevant payment-dispute process; the FTC also identifies reporting dishonest businesses as a possible next step. Its marketplace guidance outlines these options.
