A timeout means you don’t know whether the request succeeded—not that it failed. First check the carrier or shipping platform’s documented shipment or label lookup, retry, or retrieval operation. Separately check the account’s transaction history: a label record and a payment record are distinct, and a pending authorization is not necessarily a settled charge.
The label API timed out after charging me—should I retry?
Not until you have checked whether the first request created a label. A network timeout or connection reset can happen after a provider has completed the operation but before your application receives the response. Blindly repeating a create request can therefore create another label.

Use the recovery procedure documented for the exact provider and endpoint. Do not assume that a familiar idempotency header, a repeated request ID, or the HTTP method makes a label-creation call safe to replay. The USPS Domestic Labels 3.0 documentation explicitly says its label endpoint is not idempotent; Pitney Bowes documents a separate Retry Shipment lookup for a Create Shipment request that received no response.

- Preserve the original operation details. Record the request parameters, request or transaction ID, any idempotency token, the time sent, and the timeout or connection error. Do not alter shipment details and reuse a key unless the provider explicitly allows it.
- Check the provider’s documented status or recovery operation. Use a shipment/label lookup, get-label operation, or a provider-specific retry lookup. For Pitney Bowes, use Retry Shipment when the original Create Shipment request received no response.
- If a label exists, retrieve or reprint it. Do not create a replacement merely because the original response or printout was lost. USPS documents a Get Label operation, and Pitney Bowes documents Reprint Shipment for retrieving label or QR-code data that was lost or spoiled.
- If lookup confirms there is no label, follow that provider’s create-again instructions. Pitney Bowes says to submit a new Create Shipment request with a new Transaction ID in this case. That instruction is specific to Pitney Bowes; use other providers’ documented guidance for their APIs.
- Reconcile payment separately. Review the carrier or payment account’s transaction record and determine whether the amount is pending, captured, refunded, or settled. If the status or recovery eligibility is unclear, contact the provider with the request identifier and timestamp rather than repeatedly submitting create requests.
- Record the outcome. Save the final shipment or label ID and the financial status before closing the incident.
Will retrying buy a second label?
It can, depending on the endpoint. Idempotency is a contract for a particular API operation, not a general property of shipping APIs. For example, USPS Domestic Labels 3.0 states: “Label endpoint: Not idempotent.” Its documentation says resubmitting a previously used UUID may create another label; reprint and cancellation requests then reference the most recent instance of that UUID. Do not replay a USPS label-creation request on the assumption that the UUID prevents a duplicate.

Provider behavior differs. Pitney Bowes documents a lookup path for an unanswered create request. DHL eCommerce Americas’ U.S.-region Label API documentation lists create, get, and void operations and says each request creates a single label, but the surfaced documentation does not establish that create is idempotent or specify an ambiguous-timeout recovery procedure. An operation list alone is not permission to retry blindly.

Can I reprint the label without paying again?
Often, the right next step is retrieval or reprinting—not another purchase—but the exact route depends on the provider and the label’s status. A print failure or lost response is different from a failed label-creation operation. Pitney Bowes describes Reprint Shipment as retrieving a label or QR code when the original response data was spoiled or lost. USPS documents Get Label and ties reprint and cancellation behavior to its UUID. Follow the provider’s documented operation and verify which label instance it targets.

Cancellation and refunds are also separate from reprinting. USPS documents cancellation of an unused label or initiation of a refund, but that does not establish that every label is eligible or that a refund has completed. Check the actual label status and account transaction before treating the financial side as resolved.

Payment and shipping-label creation may be separate API operations, even when they occur in one checkout flow. Stripe’s idempotency mechanism governs Stripe API calls: for a repeated key, Stripe returns the first result, including a 500 response; keys may be pruned after at least 24 hours, and reusing a key with different parameters produces an error. Those rules do not prove that a carrier’s label endpoint is idempotent, nor do they show whether a particular payment was authorized, captured, refunded, or settled. For a payment retry, follow the payment processor’s rules. For a label retry, follow the carrier or shipping platform’s rules. Keep the two operation records linked in your system, but verify each system’s status independently.

- Persist the operation before dispatch. Store the intended shipment data, operation identifier, provider request ID or transaction ID, and timestamp so a worker can reconcile the same operation after a process restart.
- Retry only under the endpoint’s documented contract. If a provider explicitly supports idempotency, preserve the same key and identical parameters for retries. Stripe, for example, rejects reuse of a key with changed parameters; do not transfer that rule to a carrier API unless its documentation says so.
- Reconcile before replaying a create. Prefer a documented status lookup or retry operation when the response is uncertain. A generic HTTP client, queue, or proxy should not automatically replay a mutating create request without an idempotency guarantee or a reconciliation step.
- Keep operations distinct. Retry lookup, label retrieval/reprint, void/cancel, and refund are different actions. Track label status and billing status separately.
- Handle rate limits without confusing them with uncertain completion. Stripe’s error reference recommends exponential backoff for HTTP 429 responses. Apply the relevant provider’s rate-limit guidance, but do not use backoff as a substitute for checking whether a timed-out request already caused a side effect. Stripe error codes
There is no universal recovery window or retry rule: for instance, Pitney Bowes documents up to 24 hours for its Retry Shipment label retrieval, while USPS Domestic Labels 3.0 explicitly warns that label creation is not idempotent. Consult the current documentation for your provider, API version, and region before acting.
