If your Shark cordless vacuum’s brush roll has stopped spinning, switch the vacuum off, remove hair or debris caught at the nozzle, and check that the vacuum is tilted back into its normal floor-cleaning position. If that does not help, check the powered connections and consult the troubleshooting guide for your exact model. Shark’s IX140/IZ140 manual says to remove the battery before servicing.
1. Turn the vacuum off and clear the brush roll
Before reaching near the nozzle, switch the vacuum off. On IX140/IZ140 models, Shark’s owner’s guide warns: “To reduce the risk of shock and unintended operation, turn off power and remove the battery before servicing.” Follow the safety instructions in your own model’s guide; battery-removal instructions may differ by model.

Look for hair, string, carpet fibers, and compacted debris wrapped around or lodged near the brush roll. Clear obstructions from the floor nozzle and check the wand for a blockage. Shark’s IX140/IZ140 guide directs owners to switch off the vacuum and remove blockages before turning it back on. Do not put your fingers near a moving brush roll.
2. Check that the brush roll is engaged
On the IX140/IZ140 and MultiFLEX cordless families, Shark says the handheld must be tilted back far enough for the brush roll or rolls to engage. After clearing debris, test the vacuum in its normal floor-cleaning position. Other Shark models may use different controls or engagement behavior, so check the guide for your model rather than assuming this step applies to every cordless vacuum.

3. Reseat the powered connections
If your nozzle has headlights and they are off as well as the brush roll, a loose connection may be the cause. Shark’s IX140/IZ140 and MultiFLEX guide advise disconnecting and reconnecting the handheld, wand, and nozzle. Check that each connection is secure, then test the vacuum again. If the headlights remain out or the brush roll still does not work, contact Shark support.
4. Allow for cooling if the vacuum shut off
An automatic shutoff can be related to overheating or a blockage. Shark’s general maintenance guidance for upright vacuums recommends checking for clogs and allowing the vacuum to cool when an overheating thermostat activates; that upright-vacuum advice is not a universal cordless cool-down instruction.

For the MultiFLEX family, Shark’s manual specifies letting the unit and battery cool for at least 45 minutes after certain automatic-shutoff symptoms. Use that interval only when the manual for your model gives the same instruction.

If the brush roll still will not spin after you clear blockages, check its engagement, and reseat the connections, stop repeated attempts and contact Shark Customer Service. Use Shark’s support page to find information for your exact model. The IX140/IZ140 and MultiFLEX manuals direct owners to customer service when troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

Before buying a replacement brush roll
A replacement brush roll may be appropriate if you have identified a failed or damaged part, but the title of this troubleshooting guide does not identify which part fits your vacuum. Shark lists brush rolls and related parts for specific products in its parts and accessories catalog and on product-specific pages such as the IZ361 product page. These listings do not establish universal compatibility.
Find the vacuum’s model number, consult its owner’s guide, and verify that the replacement matches that exact model before ordering. If the brush roll itself is not the failed part, replacing it may not solve a fault elsewhere in the nozzle or vacuum.
