To create a SharePoint skill, open Copilot in SharePoint from a site page or document library that is not in edit mode, describe a repeatable workflow, choose whether it is personal or site-specific, review Copilot’s draft, and confirm saving. A personal skill is for its owner; a site skill is managed by the site admin and available on its associated site.
Before you create a SharePoint skill
These instructions cover skills created in Copilot in SharePoint—not the separate skill builder for agents in Copilot Studio. Microsoft’s SharePoint skills feature is intended to make repeatable workflows reusable with supported SharePoint content and actions.

Microsoft says general availability began rolling out on September 30, 2026, and that availability appears in tenants as rollout progresses. Its setup guidance says creating and managing skills is included with an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license; advanced work uses Copilot Credits through usage-based billing. Check the current Microsoft setup guidance if Copilot or skills do not appear in your tenant.

Choose personal or site-specific scope
| Scope | Best for | Owner and storage | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | An individual’s preferences or recurring way of working | Owned by you and stored in your OneDrive | Available to you across supported SharePoint experiences |
| Site-specific | A repeatable process a team uses on one SharePoint site | Owned and managed by the site admin; stored in the site’s Agent Assets library | Available only on the associated site |
Choose personal scope when the workflow reflects how you work and does not need to be shared. Choose site scope when the process should be available to people using one particular site. A site skill does not make its content available to everyone: each user still needs the relevant SharePoint permissions.
Create the skill in Copilot in SharePoint
- Open the right site. Go to a SharePoint site where Copilot in SharePoint is available. Open a site page or document library, and make sure the page is not in edit mode.
- Open Copilot. Open the Copilot in SharePoint chat panel from the page or library.
- Describe the reusable workflow. Ask Copilot to create a skill. Explain the task, its inputs, the steps to follow, and the expected result. State whether you want a personal or site-specific skill. If the audience is unclear, ask Copilot to help you choose a scope.
- Review the draft. Check that the definition captures the actual workflow, including important exceptions and the format or destination of the output. Ask Copilot to revise unclear or missing details.
- Confirm saving. Save the skill when the draft matches the process you want to reuse.

A skill is more useful when its instructions make the task and result unambiguous. For example, instead of asking for a skill that “organizes project files,” specify which files it should consider, how to identify the project, what organization rules to follow, and what to do when a file does not fit those rules. For a summarizing workflow, specify the intended audience, the information to include, and the desired output format.

Run a skill and check that it loaded
In a document library, select relevant files first if that helps focus the task. Then ask Copilot a question or give it an instruction that matches the skill. Copilot may load a relevant skill automatically; you can also invoke the skill by name. Look for the skill indicator card in the chat to check whether it loaded.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where site skills are stored and what they can do
Site skill files are Markdown files stored at /Agent Assets/Skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md. Copilot creates and activates the Agent Assets library when the first site skill is created. Site admins own and manage site skills, and standard SharePoint file governance can be applied to them.

SharePoint skills can chain supported actions such as understanding and summarizing content, organizing files and folders, and interacting with lists. Microsoft states that “Skills can’t connect to external systems or execute custom code.” If a workflow depends on an external service or custom code, it cannot be implemented as a SharePoint skill alone.
Quick Recap
If you cannot create or find a skill
- Copilot or the skill option is missing: Check that Copilot in SharePoint is available in your tenant and that your Microsoft 365 Copilot license is active. Feature availability may vary while rollout progresses.
- You cannot create a site skill: Confirm that you have Edit permission on the site. View permission allows running a site skill, not creating one.
- A teammate cannot use your personal skill: Personal skills belong to their owner. For a shared workflow on one site, create a site-specific skill instead.
- A skill cannot access a file or site: Skills do not bypass SharePoint permissions. The person running it must already have access to the content.
- The skill is not visibly applied: Invoke it by name, or ask a matching question and check the chat for the skill indicator card.
