SharePoint Online Image Sizes: A Placement-by-Placement Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single image size that guarantees a particular result across SharePoint Online. Modern pages resize and crop images according to the section, column, web-part layout, and viewing device. Start with where the image will appear: use Microsoft’s recommended source width for that column, match the aspect ratio to the web-part layout, and set a focal point when the subject must stay visible.

Start with the placement, not a universal pixel size

Microsoft Support’s guidance for modern SharePoint pages gives useful pixel widths and example dimensions, but they are recommendations—not mandatory upload dimensions or promises about the final display. As Microsoft explains, responsive page design means there is no specific pixel height or width that guarantees an image will keep the same shape across devices and layouts.

That distinction matters when preparing a banner, page-title image, or web-part asset. The source file has its own dimensions and aspect ratio; SharePoint may scale or crop it to fit the selected layout. A file that looks right in one column or desktop preview may appear differently in a narrower layout or on a phone. Choose the intended placement first, then prepare and preview the image for it.

Recommended source widths for page columns

For an image expected to fill a column, Microsoft’s general rule is to use a source image at least as wide as the column. These are the recommended source widths for common modern-page layouts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Page column layout Recommended source width
Full-width column 1920 px
One column 1204 px
Two columns 586 px per column
Three columns 380 px per column
One-third left 380 px in the left column; 792 px in the right column
One-third right 792 px in the left column; 380 px in the right column

These values describe source-width guidance for the listed layouts, not a fixed rendered width on every screen. Microsoft says images in a full-width column display at full screen width and that their height is determined automatically based on screen size. For other layouts, use the table as a starting point and account for the web part’s crop and ratio.

Example dimensions for 16:9 and 4:3

Microsoft also gives rounded example dimensions for two common ratios in non-full-width layouts. The one-third layouts share a row height in each example, so the source widths differ between the narrow and wide columns:

Layout 16:9 example 4:3 example
One column 1204 × 677 px 1204 × 903 px
Two columns 586 × 330 px 586 × 439 px
Three columns 380 × 214 px 380 × 285 px
One-third left 380 × 446 px left; 792 × 446 px right 380 × 594 px left; 792 × 594 px right
One-third right 792 × 446 px left; 380 × 446 px right 792 × 594 px left; 380 × 594 px right

For example, an image intended to fill the single column in a 16:9 presentation can start at 1204 × 677 px. If you use the 4:3 example instead, the suggested dimensions are 1204 × 903 px. Neither choice guarantees that the image will display uncropped everywhere; the web part and current viewport still affect the result.

Choose a ratio for the web part and layout

Do not assume that all SharePoint images use one ratio. Microsoft’s recommendations vary by web part and, in some cases, by layout within the same web part:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Placement or layout Ratio or image behavior
Hero, Tiles The web-part height follows 8:3; images within it scale to 4:3.
Hero, Layers An individual layer follows 8:3; images within each layer are near 16:9.
Hero on mobile The carousel layout uses 16:9.
Highlighted content Carousel, Filmstrip, and Grid layouts use 16:9.
Image web part The image expands to the width of its containing section; the author can change the ratio or crop.
Image Gallery, Brick and Carousel Images retain their aspect ratios, such as 16:9, 1:1, or 4:3.
Image Gallery, Grid Offers 1:1, 16:9, and 4:3.
News Images may be 4:3, 16:9, or 21:9, depending on the layout.
Quick links, Compact, List, and Tiles Use 1:1 or 4:3.
Quick links, Filmstrip, Grid, and Button Use 16:9.

For an Image Gallery, Brick and Carousel layouts preserve the source images’ ratios, while Grid offers the listed ratio choices. For Hero and Quick links, the selected layout matters: an asset prepared for one option may be cropped differently in another. If you are choosing among layouts, consider both the available ratio and whether the image can tolerate losing material at its edges.

Page-title images and thumbnails

Page-title images have their own guidance. Microsoft says they look best when they are landscape—16:9 or wider—and at least 1 MB in size. This is a recommendation for the page-title area; it should not be applied automatically to every web-part image or header asset.

Set a focal point when a particular subject or detail must remain in frame. It is especially useful because title images may be used in thumbnails, News layouts, and search results, where the crop or available space can differ from the full page. Microsoft recommends 16:9 for a page thumbnail. By default, the thumbnail comes from the page title area or the first web part, and it can be overridden.

A practical composition leaves the important subject where it can survive a crop rather than placing it tight against an edge. Then inspect the actual page and thumbnail; a ratio recommendation alone cannot show exactly how a given crop will look.

The restriction on SVG is specific to the site logo and logo thumbnail recommendations for group-connected sites. Microsoft’s format notes list SVG for the extended-layout logo without that qualification; they list JPEG or PNG for the extended-layout background.

A reliable workflow for sizing and cropping

  1. Identify the destination. Decide whether the asset is for the page title area, a thumbnail, a site header, or a named web part. These placements do not share one sizing rule.
  2. Choose the page layout. Note the section and column arrangement, including whether it is full width, one column, multiple columns, or a one-third layout.
  3. Start with the recommended width. Use Microsoft’s column-width table as a source-file starting point. For an image expected to fill a column, keep the source at least as wide as the column guidance.
  4. Match the web-part ratio. Check the selected layout in the ratio table. When a layout preserves source ratios, choose a composition that works in the available display space; when the layout crops or scales, keep essential detail away from vulnerable edges.
  5. Set a focal point where available. Use it for title or Hero imagery when the subject must remain visible in alternate crops or thumbnails.
  6. Preview the real page at more than one width. Inspect the desktop arrangement and a narrow/mobile view, then adjust the crop or resize using SharePoint’s image editing controls if needed.

Microsoft’s guidance for communication-site grids describes centered content, with a maximum width of 1204 px and a minimum width of 320 px for mobile support; web parts scale horizontally with the page layout. That responsive behavior helps explain why a source image’s appearance can change as the available space changes.

Common sizing problems and fixes

  • The image looks cropped even though its dimensions match an example. The example is not a guarantee of uncropped output. Confirm the specific web-part layout and its ratio behavior; then change the crop or choose a source composition that better suits it.
  • The subject disappears in a thumbnail or mobile view. Set or adjust the focal point for the title or Hero image, and preview the thumbnail and narrow view. A focal point helps keep the important area in frame; it does not make all layouts use the same crop.
  • An image seems too small in a column. Check whether its source width meets the recommendation for that column. Microsoft’s general guidance is that an image expected to fill a column should be at least as wide as the column.
  • A title image is being treated like a web-part image. Apply the landscape, 16:9-or-wider and 1 MB-or-more guidance specifically to the page-title image. Check the selected web-part guidance separately for other content.
  • A header graphic looks wrong or will not work as an SVG. Confirm whether it is the standard site logo, thumbnail, extended-layout logo, or background, and use the corresponding dimensions and format notes in the header table. For group-connected sites, Microsoft does not allow SVG for the site logo or its thumbnail.
  • The image changes across screen sizes. That is consistent with responsive pages: column widths and crops can vary with the layout and device. Preview the published arrangement at a narrow width and refine the crop instead of expecting one fixed output size.

If you also need a rendered screenshot of a published page for a visual check, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not choose SharePoint image dimensions or replace checking your page layout. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
