In classic shared Ethernet, devices contend for access and collisions can occur. A switched Ethernet link to an individual device is different: it provides a dedicated connection, and full-duplex operation allows sending and receiving independently.
What “shared media LAN” means
The phrase describes how devices are connected to a local network: several stations use one common transmission resource rather than each having an individual switched link. The devices therefore share the medium’s capacity or opportunities to transmit. The term is descriptive; the sources available do not establish it as one universally controlling, current topology label. For a precise description, identify the medium, link arrangement, and duplex mode.

How classic shared Ethernet works
Classic shared Ethernet is associated with CSMA/CD, a method for managing access to a shared medium and handling collisions. Because multiple stations use the same segment, they may compete to transmit. If transmissions overlap, a collision can occur and the Ethernet mechanism handles it. This describes the classic shared arrangement, not every Ethernet network in use today.

How switched Ethernet differs
A switch changes the link arrangement by connecting a station over an individual link rather than placing it on the same shared segment as other stations. On such a switched link, a station does not have to contend for permission to transmit on a common medium in the same way. In full-duplex operation, it can send and receive independently. IBM’s explanation describes this distinction between shared-media segments and dedicated-media links. IBM: Ethernet concepts
| Feature | Shared segment | Individual switched link |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission resource | Multiple stations use a common medium. | A station has an individual link to the switch. |
| Access | Stations share the opportunity to transmit; classic Ethernet uses contention. | The station can transmit on its link without the same shared-medium contention. |
| Duplex behavior | Classic shared Ethernet is associated with CSMA/CD. | Full-duplex operation permits independent sending and receiving. |
| Collisions | Collisions can occur on the shared medium. | Bridges and switches can reduce collisions in Ethernet LANs, according to H3C’s guide. |
What switches and VLANs change
Layer 2 bridges and switches can reduce collisions in Ethernet LANs by separating traffic onto links. A switch does not, by itself, mean every aspect of a LAN is isolated: VLANs can divide a LAN into smaller broadcast domains, which is a separate boundary from the shared-medium question. H3C’s explanation covers both collision reduction and VLAN broadcast domains. H3C: Ethernet LAN guide

How to interpret the term in a network description
If documentation calls a network a shared media LAN, read it as a description of a common transmission segment unless it specifies otherwise. To understand the actual setup, check whether devices share a medium or have individual switch links, whether access is contention-based, and whether links operate half- or full-duplex. Older descriptions of Ethernet as shared media may refer to classic implementations; an ASUS manual, for example, presents Ethernet in historical 10 Mbps/CSMA/CD terms rather than describing all present-day Ethernet.
