Upgrade from shared hosting when you can show that your current plan repeatedly limits the site despite reasonable optimization, or when you need server access or software the shared plan does not allow. There is no reliable visitor-count threshold that applies to every site. If your workload fits the plan and the site works well, staying on shared hosting is a sensible choice.
What changes when you move from shared hosting to a VPS?
Shared hosting places multiple customers’ sites on one server and shares its resources. A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine on a physical server, with resources allocated to a customer. AWS describes VPS hosting as “one physical server in a data center [hosting] many virtualized servers with dedicated resources, each for different customers.” AWS’s hosting explainer outlines the distinction.

Those labels do not tell you exactly what a particular plan guarantees. Check the provider’s terms for CPU, memory, storage, isolation, and resource limits. A VPS also changes who is responsible for operating the server: on an unmanaged plan, you may need to handle operating-system updates, security, monitoring, and backups yourself. Managed plans can cover some of those tasks, but “managed” varies by provider. UnderHost’s comparison and DreamHost’s comparison describe provider perspectives on these differences.

- Your site performs adequately and stays within the plan’s documented limits.
- A standard CMS or supported application meets your needs; you do not need root access or a custom server stack.
- You prefer a simpler setup in which the provider manages the server.
- The workload is stable, and the added cost and operating responsibilities of a VPS are not justified by a specific need.
A growing site does not automatically need a VPS. The decision depends on its actual workload, plan limits, application, and the capabilities you need.
#1 Best Overall
- Wide Compatibility & Versatile Use: ZOERAX M6 rack mount screw kit is ideal for installing server racks, network cabinets, rack shelves, patch panels, A/V equipment, and more. Designed for standard square-hole racks and cabinets, these M6 cage nuts and screws ensure a secure fit for most 19-inch rack systems used in data centers, offices, and home labs
- Heavy-Duty Carbon Steel Construction: Made from premium carbon steel, these M6 cage nuts and screws deliver high strength and long-lasting durability. The material provides excellent resistance to rust, corrosion, and oxidation, performing reliably in demanding environments such as high humidity, temperature fluctuations, and long-term rack installations
- Precision Metric Standard M6: Manufactured to strict metric standards, each M6 screw and cage nut features precise dimensions with minimal tolerance. Clean, sharp threads without burrs allow smooth installation without stripping or slipping. The deep Phillips head design ensures better torque control and faster, more efficient mounting
- Safe, Reliable & Eco-Conscious Materials: ZOERAX uses non-toxic, environmentally friendly carbon steel materials to ensure safe handling and use. Heat-treated for optimal hardness, ductility, and impact resistance, these rack screws and cage nuts offer dependable performance while meeting safety and quality expectations for professional installations
- Complete Mounting Kit with Washers: This essential M6 rack hardware kit includes screws, cage nuts, and heavy-duty washers. The included washers help distribute pressure evenly and reduce scratches or marks on rack rails and equipment, providing a cleaner, more secure installation right out of the box
Signals that an upgrade may be warranted
Recurring resource limits
Repeated CPU or memory limit notices, errors during busy periods, or performance degradation that coincides with high usage are reasons to investigate. Review resource graphs, notices, and logs over time: a recurring constraint is more meaningful than a single incident. UnderHost cites recurring CPU-limit warnings as one possible upgrade signal; DreamHost also lists peak slowdowns and resource errors as examples, not as a controlled performance test.
A required configuration the shared plan cannot provide
You may need a VPS even with modest traffic if the application requires root access, custom server software, background processes, or another capability unavailable on your current plan. This is a configuration requirement, not evidence that shared hosting is inherently too slow.
A documented plan ceiling your host cannot address
Ask your current provider whether a higher shared tier or a managed option can resolve the specific limit you have identified. The next step is not necessarily a VPS; providers offer different tiers and support arrangements.
How to tell whether the server is really the problem
- Check the evidence over time. Review your hosting dashboard’s resource graphs, limit notices, and error logs. Look for recurring CPU or memory constraints rather than relying on a vague impression that the site feels slow.
- Compare symptoms with busy periods. Note whether slowdowns or errors happen predictably when usage rises. A pattern can help connect symptoms to capacity, but it does not by itself prove the server is the cause.
- Rule out site-level causes. Apply reasonable caching and other application-level optimizations, then reassess. Slow pages alone do not establish that the hosting plan is responsible.
- Separate capacity from configuration. If the blocker is unsupported software or a lack of root access, more visitors are not required to justify a move. If the issue is a resource ceiling, ask the host whether another shared tier can address it.
There is no universal daily or monthly visitor count that marks the point to upgrade. The reviewed provider guidance offers examples of warning signs, not a threshold that can be applied across sites, plans, and hosting implementations.

Compare the full service and its operating requirements, rather than treating “VPS” as a single standard product.
| Decision factor | Shared hosting tends to fit when… | VPS tends to fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Resources | Usage stays within plan limits and performance is adequate. | Investigation points to recurring plan ceilings or the workload needs more flexible resources. |
| Configuration | A standard CMS or supported application is enough. | You need root access, custom software, background processes, or a custom stack. |
| Server operations | You want provider-managed maintenance and a simpler interface. | You can administer the server or have confirmed that a managed service covers the tasks you need. |
| Cost | Lower cost and an all-in-one plan are priorities. | The performance, configuration, or isolation need justifies the full recurring and operational cost. |
Ask who handles operating-system updates, security patches, monitoring, backups, email, and recovery. Confirm whether control-panel licensing or transfer charges apply, and check the provider’s support and service commitments. A VPS can provide isolation and control, but it is not an automatic guarantee of security, faster pages, or uptime; configuration and maintenance matter. UnderHost and DreamHost discuss these trade-offs, but their plan examples should not be treated as universal market prices or limits.
What the available industry data does—and does not—show
CloudLinux’s Web Hosting Trends & Innovations 2025 report says 43.4% of respondents identified security as a challenge for VPS providers, and 39.9% identified performance consistency as a major concern among VPS providers. These are provider-industry survey findings, not measurements of end-user site performance or evidence that VPS is less secure than shared hosting. They do not establish an upgrade threshold.
