Share Photos Between iPhone, iPad, and Mac: Copy and Paste With Universal Clipboard

Use Universal Clipboard to copy a photo on one nearby Apple device and paste it on another. For sending photo files or batches, choose AirDrop.

To move a photo quickly between your own nearby iPhone, iPad, and Mac, copy it on one device and paste it on the other with Universal Clipboard. It is a temporary copy-and-paste handoff—not automatic Photos library syncing. For sending photo files to someone else or sharing several photos at once, use AirDrop instead.

Copy a photo on one Apple device and paste it on another

Universal Clipboard works through the usual copy-and-paste commands; there is no separate app to open. Apple says the copied content is available briefly or until you copy something else.

  1. Copy the photo on the source device. On iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the image, then tap Copy. On Mac, select the image and press Command-C, or choose Edit > Copy.
  2. Open the destination. On the other device, go to the note, email, document, or other app and place the insertion point where the photo should appear.
  3. Paste. On iPhone or iPad, tap the destination and choose Paste. On Mac, press Command-V or use the app’s Paste command.

The receiving app needs to accept pasted images. If you need the image as a photo file in someone else’s Photos library, use AirDrop rather than treating the clipboard handoff as a file transfer.

What you need for Universal Clipboard

Apple’s requirements apply to both the source and destination devices. Keep the devices near one another, sign in to the same Apple Account on each, and turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff. The devices must also meet Apple’s system requirements for Continuity. Apple says Handoff is on by default. See Apple’s Universal Clipboard instructions for the requirements and supported-device details.

Choose the right way to share

What you want to do Use Why
Paste one copied image into a note, email, or document on your own nearby device Universal Clipboard It lets you paste copied content on another nearby device signed in to the same Apple Account.
Send one or more photo files to another nearby person AirDrop Photos offers AirDrop in its share sheet for sending items to nearby Apple devices.
Let a group view and contribute to an album over time Shared Album Apple lists Shared Albums as a way for a group to view and contribute; setup and availability depend on Apple’s Photos options.

For AirDrop, open the photo or select several in Photos, tap the Share button, and choose the nearby recipient. Apple also documents an iPhone-to-iPhone method: with both devices on and unlocked and AirDrop enabled, select the photos, bring the devices together, then tap Share. Items sent through that documented proximity flow are added to the recipient’s Photos library. Apple’s guides explain sharing photos and videos on iPhone and Continuity on iPad.

Fix a Universal Clipboard handoff that does not work

  1. Confirm the account. Both devices need to be signed in to the same Apple Account.
  2. Check connections and Handoff. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and make sure Handoff is enabled in their settings.
  3. Bring the devices closer. Apple’s iPhone support guide says they should be within 30 feet (10 meters); this is a troubleshooting instruction, not a performance guarantee.
  4. Check compatibility. Universal Clipboard requires compatible devices and operating-system versions. Consult Apple’s copy-and-paste guide for supported requirements.
  5. Review VPN settings if applicable. Apple advises checking that a VPN configuration does not block local networking.
  6. Restart the devices. Apple includes restarting as a troubleshooting step if the handoff still fails.

Consider photo metadata when sharing

Apple says its iPhone Photos sharing workflow can include associated metadata such as the date and time, location, device, and captions. How each destination app or sharing route handles every metadata field is not established here. If location privacy matters, inspect the available sharing options before sending rather than assuming the information will always be removed or retained. See Apple’s photo-sharing guidance.
