Shadows of Oblivion is described as a tabletop expansion, not a newly announced video game or an official genre change for The Elder Scrolls Online. The name appears in a Chip Theory Games campaign update for The Elder Scrolls: Heroes of Tamriel and in a retailer listing for an expansion to Betrayal of the Second Era. Bethesda’s ESO update history documents the online game’s ongoing updates, including its Gates of Oblivion content, but does not announce a genre switch under the name Shadows of Oblivion.
What is Shadows of Oblivion?
It is a tabletop expansion associated with an Elder Scrolls board-game project, rather than a new digital Elder Scrolls game. Chip Theory Games’ campaign update presents Shadows of Oblivion in connection with The Elder Scrolls: Heroes of Tamriel; a retailer identifies it as an expansion for Betrayal of the Second Era. The two listings use different names for the tabletop title, so they should not be treated as evidence of a new video-game release. Read the campaign update and see the retailer listing.

What does the expansion add?
The campaign update describes content involving five Daedric princes. Each is associated with a side-quest-like choice that offers a blessing and a curse. Players are encouraged to use both, while those who want to adjust the difficulty can choose one or the other. The description frames these as tabletop play choices; it does not establish a new mode or mechanics for ESO or another Elder Scrolls video game.

How is this different from The Elder Scrolls Online?
The Elder Scrolls Online is a continuing online video game with documented update arcs. Its official update history lists Updates 30, 31, and 32—Blackwood, Waking Flame, and Deadlands—as part of the Gates of Oblivion saga. That history provides no support for a video-game genre change called Shadows of Oblivion. ESO’s official game update history is the relevant record for its digital updates.

Has Bethesda officially announced an Elder Scrolls genre switch?
The cited official ESO update history does not announce one, and the available descriptions identify Shadows of Oblivion as a tabletop expansion. That distinction matters: a board-game product can use the Elder Scrolls setting without changing the genre of the online video game or signaling a new Bethesda video game.
