Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When ShadowPlay records gameplay video but the file has no sound, it’s almost always an audio routing or configuration issue—not a “broken” recorder. In 2024, the most common culprits are incorrect ShadowPlay audio source settings, Windows default audio device changes, and conflicts with other capture/virtual audio apps.
This guide walks you through the highest-probability fixes in order. You’ll check ShadowPlay settings first, then Windows input/output devices, then drivers and capture conflicts, so you don’t waste time on random toggling.

Why ShadowPlay records video but not audio
ShadowPlay (NVIDIA’s in-game overlay capture) depends on both your game’s audio pipeline and Windows’ current audio devices. If system sound or microphone capture is disabled, routed to the wrong device, blocked by privacy settings, or intercepted by another recorder, ShadowPlay will still create a video track but produce a silent audio track (or no audio track at all).

- Do you hear sound while playing? If the game is actually silent in Windows, ShadowPlay can’t capture what isn’t being produced.
- Restart the capture session. Close the overlay (Alt+Z), reboot the game, and try recording again for 10–20 seconds.
- Confirm you’re checking the right file. Some users open the latest video, but another older silent file is still playing in the folder.
- Try a different output device. If you’re using speakers, try headphones (or vice versa), then record again.
If those don’t fix it, go to the targeted checks below.
Fix system sound not captured
This is the classic issue: video records fine, but system audio is missing (or you only get game voices in the wrong place). The fix is usually either a ShadowPlay audio source setting problem or Windows output device mismatch.
1) Verify ShadowPlay system audio capture
Open the GeForce overlay and confirm system audio capture is enabled.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press Alt+Z to open the GeForce Experience overlay.
- Go to Settings (gear icon).
- Find Audio or Microphone / System sound options depending on your UI version.
- Enable System Sound (or ensure it is not muted/disabled).
- Record a short clip and test playback.
2) Match ShadowPlay with your Windows output device
ShadowPlay typically captures system audio from the active Windows output pipeline. If Windows switches devices (USB headset, HDMI monitor speakers, Bluetooth), ShadowPlay can record silence.
- Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar.
- Select Sound settings.
- Under Output, choose the device you’re actually hearing from (e.g., Speakers (Realtek), Headphones (USB Audio Device), LG Monitor).
- Click Device properties (if available) and confirm the volume isn’t set to 0.
- Record again.
3) Disable exclusive mode if your output device uses it
Exclusive-mode audio can interfere with capture/virtual routing. Test this if system sound is missing while you still hear audio normally.
- Go to Control Panel → Sound (or in Windows search, type Sound and open the classic app).
- On the Playback tab, select your output device and click Properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device.
- Uncheck Give exclusive mode applications priority (if present).
- Click Apply and record again.
Fix microphone audio not captured
If you get silence but you expected voice commentary, ShadowPlay might have microphone capture off, using the wrong input device, or blocked by Windows privacy.

1) Verify microphone capture in ShadowPlay
- Open Alt+Z → Settings.
- Find the Microphone audio option.
- Enable microphone capture.
- Select the correct mic device if the UI allows device selection.
- Record a short clip while talking and check playback.
2) Confirm the Windows microphone input device and level
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select your microphone.
- Click Device properties and confirm the Volume isn’t at 0.
- In Input settings, watch the Test your microphone meter while you speak.
3) Enable microphone permissions for Windows apps
Windows privacy can block capture apps from accessing the mic.
- Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Ensure access is allowed for the relevant app (your overlay/capture component as shown in Windows).
- Try recording again.
4) Disable enhancements and “audio effects” for the mic
Audio effects (noise suppression, beamforming, “enhancements”) can break capture in some device drivers.
- Settings → System → Sound → select microphone → Device properties.
- Look for Additional device properties or Enhancements.
- Disable enhancements and test again.
Check Windows audio routing & privacy
ShadowPlay audio problems often trace back to routing. If you use multiple outputs (monitor HDMI, USB headset, Bluetooth earbuds), Windows can switch the active device while you’re recording.
Test with a single fixed output device
Pick one output (for example, your USB headset), set it as default, and keep it connected during the test.
- Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings.
- Under Output, set your desired device as default.
- Disconnect Bluetooth/HDMI temporarily if you can.
- Record a 15-second clip and verify audio.
Disable virtual audio drivers temporarily
Apps like virtual cable software, voice changers, “audio mixers,” and some streaming overlays can grab the audio stream and starve ShadowPlay. Temporarily close them and retry.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close Voicemeeter/virtual routing tools
- Close Discord screen-share audio capture modes (if applicable)
- Close OBS and any other recorder during the test
- Reboot if the audio stack is heavily customized
Update and verify the capture stack
ShadowPlay is part of NVIDIA’s GPU driver and the GeForce Experience/overlay components. When sound capture breaks after updates, driver versions and overlay components are the first things to verify.

1) Update GeForce Experience and Game Ready drivers
- Open GeForce Experience.
- Check for Driver updates and install the latest Game Ready driver.
- After installation, reboot your PC.
Then test recording again. If you recently updated and broke audio, consider rolling back one driver version as a diagnostic step.
2) Verify overlay is working
If the overlay isn’t fully functional, audio capture can fail even if video capture still happens.
- Press Alt+Z.
- Confirm the overlay menus appear instantly.
- Start a record and confirm the timer and HUD behave normally.
3) Check NVIDIA privacy and background services
Some systems restrict background services or overlay access. Make sure NVIDIA’s components are running.
- Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
- Check Processes for NVIDIA/GeForce related services.
- If you don’t see them, restart GeForce Experience and reboot.
Game/Audio-specific gotchas
Certain games use custom audio pipelines that behave differently with capture. Also, “exclusive fullscreen” and audio device switching inside the game can lead to silence in ShadowPlay recordings.
Try changing in-game audio mode
- Set the game to Fullscreen or Borderless (whichever you didn’t try yet).
- Disable any “audio output switching” or “auto device” features if the game has them.
- Record again.
Disable spatial audio formats if you use them
Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic, and some vendor spatial drivers can complicate system audio capture. Test by turning spatial effects off for the output device.
- Settings → System → Sound → choose output → Device properties.
- Disable spatial sound or enhancements.
- Record and verify audio.
Reseat the HDMI/monitor audio path
If your audio is coming through a monitor (HDMI/DisplayPort), the Windows output device can bounce during GPU or refresh-rate changes.

Reset ShadowPlay audio settings
If you’ve toggled multiple options (system sound, mic, push-to-talk, muted devices), a reset often fixes it faster than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Alt+Z.
- Go to Settings.
- Find audio-related toggles and return them to defaults: enable System Sound and Microphone as needed.
- Confirm the correct mic device is selected.
- Record a 10–20 second clip and test playback.
If your UI doesn’t expose a “reset,” fully restart GeForce overlay (close/reopen) and test immediately. You can also delete and re-add capture presets if your version supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When ShadowPlay still fails: alternatives and diagnostics
If ShadowPlay keeps producing silent audio after the above steps, it’s time to isolate whether the problem is audio routing, overlay capture, or game behavior.
Use NVIDIA’s screen recording sanity test
Some configurations behave differently for full game capture vs desktop capture. If ShadowPlay supports desktop capture in your setup, try a quick desktop clip with system audio.
- Start a small recording while playing a YouTube video or system sound event.
- Check whether ShadowPlay captures desktop audio.
Try OBS to confirm the audio pipeline
If OBS records audio but ShadowPlay doesn’t, the issue is almost certainly ShadowPlay configuration or driver/overlay integration. If both fail, the Windows audio routing or exclusive-mode setting is likely the root cause.

Common mistakes
- Assuming mic capture equals system audio. ShadowPlay treats them separately.
- Recording while Windows switches output devices. USB headset sleep, HDMI hot-plug, or Bluetooth reconnect can cause silence.
- Running multiple capture tools. OBS, Discord capture, and virtual audio mixers can fight for the audio stream.
- Leaving enhancements/spatial audio on. Some drivers don’t play nicely with capture.
- Using the wrong default input/output. ShadowPlay often follows Windows defaults.
FAQ
Why does ShadowPlay record video but no audio?
The two most common reasons are ShadowPlay’s system sound/microphone toggles are off, or Windows is routing audio to a different output device while you record.
Can I record system sound and microphone at the same time?
Yes, but you must enable both in ShadowPlay and ensure the correct Windows input/output devices are selected. If only one works, focus on that specific source path (system sound vs mic).
Does driver rollback help if sound broke after an update?
Sometimes. If you updated NVIDIA drivers shortly before the problem started, rolling back one version can be a strong diagnostic move. Keep a note of the last working version.
Will exclusive mode cause silent audio in ShadowPlay?
It can. If your output device has “Allow applications to take exclusive control” enabled, disable it and test again.
What if my game uses voice chat (Discord/In-game)?
Voice chat tools can route audio differently than the game. If you only miss voice chat audio, test with ShadowPlay system sound + mic capture toggled and check whether Discord is using the correct audio device.
Final Thoughts
ShadowPlay not recording sound is usually fixable by aligning ShadowPlay’s audio source settings with the active Windows input/output devices, then removing audio routing conflicts from other apps or virtual drivers.
If the problem persists after driver updates and exclusive-mode/virtual-driver checks, use OBS as a diagnostic: it quickly tells you whether the issue is ShadowPlay-specific or part of your system’s audio pipeline.
