Shadow of the Colossus was rebuilt and re-released twice after its 2005 PS2 debut: first as a PS3 HD remaster in 2011, then as a substantially reconstructed PS4 game in 2018. The distinction matters: Sony called the PS3 edition a remaster, while Bluepoint Games described its PS4 project as a remake—not simply another remaster.
Three editions, two later rebuilds
The count starts with the original, not with it. The 2005 PS2 release is the starting point; the two later projects are the 2011 PS3 remaster and the 2018 PS4 remake.

Why the PS3 edition is a remaster and the PS4 edition a remake
2011: an HD remaster for PS3
Sony presented the PS3 collection as a remaster of the PS2 titles. Its announced features included full 1080p HD, improved frame rates, stereoscopic 3D, 7.1 surround sound, bonus video content, dynamic themes, and Trophy support. These are Sony’s listed features, not independent measurements of image quality or performance.

2018: a visual and technical reconstruction for PS4
Bluepoint president Marco Thrush drew the distinction directly: “With Shadow of the Colossus we’re working on a remake — it’s not really a remaster. One, because we already did the remaster.” The PS4 release presented a rebuilt version of the game, with reconstructed visuals and a photo mode, while aiming to retain the original’s character and feel.
The technical account makes “rebuilt” more precise than “made entirely from scratch.” In a GDC presentation, Bluepoint technical director Peter Dalton said the team used the PS3 remaster as its base, first checking parity against the PS2 and PS3 versions. The original game’s code handled most gameplay; Bluepoint’s engine took over core systems and visual work including world geometry, particles, and lighting. It was a major rebuild, but not a wholesale recreation of every gameplay system.

Dalton also described Bluepoint’s broader incremental approach: establish a functioning build, recreate binaries for the original target, test parity, then upgrade and port in controlled stages. His talk notes that missing gameplay code can be particularly costly to reverse engineer, while original art assets and tool pipelines may help but are not always essential. Those are general observations about the studio’s process, rather than details unique to Shadow of the Colossus.

What changed—and what the PS4 remake kept
Visuals and technical presentation
The PS3 collection’s announcement emphasized HD output, improved frame rates, stereoscopic 3D, and surround sound. For PS4, Sony and the developers emphasized rebuilt presentation and photo mode. These are descriptions from different launch materials, not the results of a controlled, side-by-side technical comparison.
For PS4 Pro, JAPAN Studio executive producer Yasutaka Asakura announced a target of dynamic 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. That is a stated target, not a verified measurement of performance in every scene or setup.

Gameplay logic, controls, and the original’s feel
Bluepoint retained most of the original gameplay code, but that does not mean the PS4 controls or experience were identical to the PS2 game. Producer Randall Lowe said the team wanted controls to feel more comparable to later PlayStation games while deliberately preserving details such as Wander standing still to shoot his bow and the character’s heavy movement.
Lowe described the guiding principle this way: “Making the game the way you remember it is the most important mission we have, regardless of everything else.” The developers weighed whether proposed visual and control changes supported that remembered feeling or pulled the game away from it.

Fixes informed by the PS3 release
Thrush said the PS3 frame-rate increase exposed issues, including a bug that made the third colossus harder. The PS4 project offered another opportunity to address such problems. This example does not establish that every issue from the PS3 edition was corrected.

- For the 2018 rebuilt presentation: the PS4 release is the remake discussed here. PlayStation says it is playable on PS5, although some PS4 features may be absent; its compatibility note does not specify which ones.
- For the PS3 remaster: look for The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, the 2011 release that pairs the remastered game with ICO.
- For the original release: the starting version was the PS2 game from 2005; the cited North American announcement date should not be assumed to cover other regions.
PlayStation’s official PS4 game page confirms PS5 playability and notes the possible feature differences without itemizing them.
What the official sources establish—and what they do not
The release materials and developer accounts establish the sequence of versions, the PS3 remaster’s announced features, the PS4 team’s technical approach, and the compatibility qualification. The official sources cited here do not provide a verified sales total, player count, or neutral performance benchmark. Such figures should not be inferred from the release history or from the PS4 Pro target.
