Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition is reported to run at 30 fps in both handheld and docked play on Nintendo Switch 2. Reviewers describe a 1080p maximum or apparent docked target, but the store listing does not publish technical specifications and handheld resolution has not been confirmed. Expect a limited graphics menu, gyro aiming for the bow, and a 55.3 GB storage requirement.
How well does Shadow of Mordor run on Switch 2?
Reviews published around the game’s September 30, 2026 release report a 30 fps presentation in both handheld and docked modes. That is the practical headline for anyone deciding whether the Switch 2 version suits them: do not buy it expecting a 60 fps option or a higher-frame-rate mode. Reviewers also report that the game has no performance mode.

These are reviewers’ observations, not an official technical specification from Nintendo or the publisher. Nintendo’s eShop listing identifies the edition and its features, but does not state a frame-rate target or rendered resolution. The available reviews do not establish frame-time consistency or prove that every scene maintains an identical cadence, so a 30 fps report should not be read as a guarantee of perfectly even delivery in all circumstances.

Nintendo Life reports a maximum resolution of 1080p in both handheld and docked play. GameWatcher describes docked output as appearing to target 1080p, but says it did not measure the final handheld resolution. These accounts support treating 1080p as a reported maximum and an apparent docked target—not as a confirmed handheld rendering resolution or an official specification.

- Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
- Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
- Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings.
| Mode | Reported frame rate | Resolution information | Observed image-quality notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handheld | 30 fps, as reported by Nintendo Life and GameWatcher in 2026 | Nintendo Life reports a 1080p maximum in both modes; GameWatcher did not measure handheld resolution | Reviews describe more apparent aliasing, softer detail, lower vegetation detail, or foliage shimmer |
| Docked | 30 fps, as reported by Nintendo Life and GameWatcher in 2026 | Nintendo Life reports a 1080p maximum; GameWatcher describes 1080p as an apparent target | GameWatcher’s comparison notes sharper presentation than handheld play |
Resolution labels do not tell the whole story. A reported maximum or target does not establish that every part of the image is rendered at that resolution at all times, nor does it guarantee equal sharpness between the console’s screen and a television. In practice, reviewers describe softer distant scenery and less detailed vegetation in handheld play, along with aliasing or shimmer. Those are visible image-quality trade-offs to weigh against being able to play away from a TV.
What to expect compared with older versions
Reviews describe the Switch 2 release as offering limited image-quality improvements over older console versions rather than a major visual overhaul. If you already know the game from another platform, approach this edition as a portable way to play with some presentation compromises—not as a remaster that guarantees substantially upgraded visuals. The reported handheld drawbacks are especially relevant if you tend to notice foliage edges, distant detail, or shimmering in motion.
Handheld or docked: which mode should you choose?
Both modes are reported at 30 fps, so the choice is mainly about where you want to play and how much you value visible detail. Reviewers describe handheld play as softer, with lower vegetation detail and more apparent aliasing; docked play is described as sharper, with GameWatcher reporting an apparent 1080p target. No verified handheld resolution is available from the cited coverage, so it is not possible to make a confirmed pixel-for-pixel comparison between modes.
Rank #2
- Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings
- Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
- Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
- Choose handheld if portability matters more than the softer image detail reported in reviews.
- Choose docked if you prefer a larger-screen presentation and want the sharper image reviewers describe.
- Set expectations around frame rate if you are sensitive to a 30 fps cap. Neither mode is reported to offer a performance setting that raises it.
- Try both in a familiar area if you own the game and are unsure which presentation you prefer; judge foliage, distant scenery, and edge shimmer on your own display.
That last check is useful because screen size and viewing distance affect how readily you notice softness and aliasing. It is a personal viewing comparison, not a substitute for a measured resolution figure.
Which graphics settings can you change?
GameWatcher reports that gamma and screen-area settings are the only visual adjustments. It also reports no graphics or performance modes. That means there is no reviewed menu option for choosing a higher frame rate, prioritizing image quality, or tuning vegetation detail. If you open the game expecting the usual console-style performance-versus-quality selector, the available coverage indicates that you should not expect one.
Gamma
Gamma changes how bright or dark the image appears across its tonal range. Use it if the picture looks difficult to read on your display, but make a small adjustment and check both shadowed and bright areas before settling on a value. A change that makes dark scenes easier to see can also make the overall image look washed out if pushed too far. The reviews establish that a gamma adjustment is present; they do not provide a recommended value or a verified menu route.
Rank #3
- Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
- Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
- Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings.
Screen area
The reported screen-area adjustment is relevant if parts of the game’s image appear cut off or sit too close to the edge of a television. Check the displayed frame after changing it rather than assuming a larger setting is better. This option is separate from the game’s rendering resolution: adjusting how the image fits the display does not confirm a higher-resolution output.
Because the reported menu is sparse, it is worth distinguishing display adjustments from graphics modes. Gamma and screen area can help the picture fit or suit your display, but they do not provide a reported way to raise frame rate or select a different visual preset.
What controls and input features are supported?
Gyro aiming is reported for bow use, and Nintendo’s eShop listing identifies touch-screen support. The available sources do not document a complete button-by-button control map or explain exactly what touch input does. Treat those feature listings as confirmation that support exists, not as a description of every interaction.

Test gyro aiming before relying on it
If you want to aim with motion controls, try gyro aiming with the bow in a low-pressure situation before using it in a demanding encounter. Notice whether small movements make the reticle easier to position or cause it to drift past your intended target. Adjust sensitivity if the game presents an option that suits you; the reviewed sources do not confirm a sensitivity setting or its menu path, so do not assume a particular control exists.
Verify touch and button behavior in-game
Nintendo lists touch-screen support, but the listing does not specify whether touch applies to menus, gameplay, or another interaction. Check what responds on the game’s own screens rather than assuming you can use touch for combat or navigation. For button prompts, consult the game’s controls or accessibility menus and follow the prompts shown during play. Nintendo says Joy-Con and Switch Pro Controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but that platform-level compatibility does not establish that this game supports every controller feature or button remapping.

If an input does not behave as expected, first distinguish between a supported feature and an unverified use of that feature: gyro bow aiming is reported, while the exact touch actions and complete button map are not documented by the available sources. The in-game prompts are the most direct guide to the controls currently exposed by your installed version.

What does the Game of the Year Edition include?
Nintendo’s Australian eShop listing calls the Switch 2 release Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition, names Aspyr as publisher, and says it includes the base game and all Season Pass content. The listed additional content includes Guardians of the Flaming Eye, the Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord story missions, additional warband missions, runes, and skins.
The same listing identifies the game as single-player and notes save-data cloud support and touch-screen support. Those listing details describe the edition’s stated features; they do not supply the missing technical specifications or a complete input guide. Nintendo also states generally that Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Switch, but that platform-wide compatibility statement is not a separate game-specific performance guarantee.
How much storage does the game need?
Nintendo’s Australian eShop listing gives the Game of the Year Edition a required space figure of 55.3 GB. Check the space available on your console before downloading, and leave room for other installed content rather than treating the listing’s requirement as a recommendation to fill the last available gigabyte. The figure comes from the store listing; it is not a reviewer’s estimate of the final installed size after any later updates.
When an expansion card may help
If the available internal storage is insufficient, Switch 2 expansion storage uses microSD Express cards. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says the console is designed exclusively for microSD Express for expandable storage; conventional Switch microSD cards can be used only to view captured screenshots and videos. Check that a card is explicitly identified as microSD Express before buying it for game storage. A card is optional if you already have enough free space.
- Check the console’s available internal storage before starting the download.
- Compare the free space with the 55.3 GB requirement on Nintendo’s eShop listing.
- If you need expansion, confirm that the card is microSD Express rather than a conventional Switch microSD card.
- After installing the game, use the console’s storage information to confirm that the download completed and that space remains for other content.
What should you check before choosing this version?
The decision is clearest when you separate performance expectations, image preferences, controls, and storage. This is a 30 fps version according to two 2026 reviews, and neither mode is reported to have a performance option. Image detail is described as softer in handheld play, while docked play is described as sharper. The store listing’s storage requirement is substantial enough that checking free space first can prevent an avoidable download problem.
- For portable play: decide whether the convenience of handheld mode outweighs the reported softness, aliasing, or foliage shimmer.
- For a large screen: docked play is the mode reviewers describe as sharper, with 1080p characterized by GameWatcher as an apparent target rather than a published official specification.
- For bow use: gyro aiming is reported, but test it yourself and consult in-game options for any sensitivity controls.
- For touch input: Nintendo lists support without specifying the interactions, so verify the behavior in the game.
- For storage planning: make sure the 55.3 GB listed requirement fits, or use a compatible microSD Express card for expansion.
Performance and graphics statements here reflect reviews published around the September 30, 2026 release. The cited store and platform information does not establish whether a later update changes the presentation or menu options; check the installed version and its menus if a patch has become available.
