Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Timing and repeatability can help you tell them apart, but neither is a conclusive test, and both problems can occur together.
What separates a shader hitch from consistently low FPS?
Shader compilation is work involved in preparing graphics instructions for a particular game and GPU. AMD GPUOpen describes compiled shader instructions being created as a graphics pipeline is set up, with drivers caching them to avoid repeating work. If a game does that work at launch or just as you encounter an effect, the pause can interrupt play. Microsoft explains that runtime compilation can cause longer loads as well as in-game stutter (Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery overview; AMD GPUOpen’s explanation of driver experiments).

Low FPS is a different pattern: rendering remains sluggish across ordinary play, rather than a short hitch clustered around a first encounter. A scene can have both a brief compilation-related hitch and persistently poor frame rates, so do not treat the labels as mutually exclusive.

Use these clues to decide what to investigate next. They are practical heuristics based on compilation and cache behavior—not a validated consumer diagnostic test. The cited sources do not establish a universal frame-time threshold or prescribe a particular monitoring app.

| Clue | More consistent with shader-compilation stutter | More consistent with low FPS |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | A hitch on first launch, entry into an area, or appearance of an effect | Sluggish rendering through routine gameplay |
| Repeatability | The same scene or effect is smoother when revisited | Performance remains poor on repeat visits |
| Duration | A brief, pause-like interruption | Ongoing low rendering performance |
| Scope | May cluster around a particular scene or effect | May affect ordinary play more broadly |
These patterns are clues, not proof. A hitch can have another game or system cause, and the official explanations of shader compilation do not offer a test that conclusively identifies the source of an individual pause.
How to check a hitch in your game
- Note when it happens. Record whether the pause occurs during a loading or preparation phase, on first exposure to a new area or effect, or repeatedly throughout play.
- Return to the same scene or effect. If it is smoother the next time, that is consistent with cached work being reused, but does not establish the cause.
- Look for a shader-preparation step. If the game offers one, let it finish when practical. Compiling at launch can lengthen startup; preparing shaders earlier is intended to move some work out of gameplay (Microsoft’s overview).
- Consider recent driver changes. Microsoft notes that a driver update can invalidate shader caches, so a previously smooth effect may hitch again while work is recreated (Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog).
- Judge the wider performance pattern. If frame rates remain poor during ordinary play, investigate the broader performance issue rather than assuming every slowdown is shader compilation. The cited sources do not establish one universal cause of sustained low FPS.
Why clearing shader caches is not a routine fix
A cache can spare the game or driver from repeating some pipeline work. Clearing it—or disabling shader caching—can mean that work has to happen again. AMD GPUOpen describes longer startup or loading behavior when shader caching is disabled, so clearing caches is not a sensible default response to a hitch (AMD GPUOpen).

Can precompilation prevent the hitch?
It can reduce the relevant compilation work on a player’s device when the game and system support it, but it is not universal. Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology that prepares shader data ahead of time for supported games, devices, drivers and storefront paths (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Game Development Kit).

Microsoft reported one specific loading comparison for Forza Horizon 6: 4 seconds versus almost 1.5 minutes, described as 95% time savings with ASD, on an AMD Radeon RX 7600 and Ryzen 7 5800 system. This is Microsoft’s result for that game and hardware context, not a general loading-time guarantee for other PCs or games (Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog, May 15, 2026).

One pause—even on a first encounter—cannot confirm shader compilation. It is reasonable to describe a repeatable first-exposure hitch that eases on revisiting as consistent with compilation and cache reuse; other stalls can look similar. If poor performance continues beyond those moments, treat it as a broader performance problem. The cited material explains compilation and caching mechanisms but does not establish how common shader stutter is among PC players.
