The name describes a form factor and interface family—not a universal speed, medium, or guarantee of compatibility. The specific module and host port determine what kind of link it can provide.
What does SFP mean?
SFP stands for small form-factor pluggable. It refers to a compact module that plugs into a compatible port on equipment such as a network switch or router. Depending on the design, an SFP module can provide an electrical or optical connection; the label by itself does not tell you which one.

The SFP transceiver has a dedicated specification, INF-8074, in the SFF specification catalog maintained by SNIA. The catalog lists separate specifications for related SFP+ interfaces and modules, including SFF-8431 and SFF-8402. These documents describe different parts of the interface family rather than one interchangeable standard. SNIA’s SFF specification catalog
What does an SFP module do?
An SFP module connects a host device’s port to a network link. It may transmit over copper or fiber, depending on the module. NVIDIA describes SFP as a transceiver or cable arrangement with one or two lanes in each direction; the medium, rate, and application depend on the particular module and equipment. #1 Best Overall
- 10GBASE-SR SFP+ to LC Optical 10 Gigabit Ethernet Fiber transceiver module, 10GbE Multimode SFP+(compatible with both 62.5um and 50um LC cables; supports OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4 fiber cables), Duplex LC connector, 850nm, DDM, up to 300m.
- [Wide Compatibility] Compatible with Cisco SFP-10G-SR, Meraki MA-SFP-10GB-SR, Ubiquiti UniFi UF-MM-10G, Fortinet, Mikrotik, Netgear, D-Link, Supermicro, TP-Link and Other Open Switches.
- [Easy to Use] Easy installation, plug and play, fully hot-pluggable with ESD protection. Widely used in network switch, server, or NIC with SFP+ to a 10 Gigabit fiber channel network with multimode LC for Network Attached Storage(NAS), Storage Area Network(SAN), and High Performance Computing(HPC) applications.
- [Durable & Low Power Consumption] Adopt high quality alloy, the shell is strong and wear-resistant; Low power consumption(less than 1.05watt) and low EMI emission design. SFP MSA Compliant, IEEE 802.3ae Compliant. Operating Temperature: 0°C to 70°C.
- [What you Get] 2x 100% tested 10GBase-SR modules, 3-Year warranty and lifetime tech support.
For an optical connection, the transceivers at both ends and the fiber patch cable must be suitable for one another. The SFP name alone does not establish fiber type, connector, or supported reach.
SFP, SFP+, and SFP28: what is the difference?
SFP, SFP+, and SFP28 are related form-factor and interface-family labels, but they are not interchangeable names for a single speed. NVIDIA’s guide describes SFP+ as covering 10–14 Gb/s products and SFP28 as covering 25–28 Gb/s products. Those ranges are the guide’s descriptions; they are not a substitute for checking the exact port and module specifications for your equipment. NVIDIA’s cables and transceivers guide

- Data Rate: 10G
- Interface: RJ-45
- Cable Type: CAT.6a/CAT7
- Reach: up to 30 meters (PLEASE NOTE this 10GBase-T SFP+ transceiver may get hot when it's working, because it's built with the latest IC: Marvell AQR113C. We suggest to use this product in places where the ambient temperature is below 50°C.)
- Wide Compatibility - for Cisco, Fortinet, Netgear, D-Link, TP-Link, Linksys, Broadcom, Edge-core, EMC, F5, Meraki, Norkia, QTC, Supermicro, and Other Open Switches. (Not compatible with HP-ProCurve, HP-H3C, HP-Aruba, Intel, Arista, Mellanox, Dell Force10, Extreme, Brocade, Juniper). For Ubiquiti devices, we recommend this transceiver: ASIN B094N9YKN9.
SNIA lists separate specifications for SFP and SFP+ interfaces and modules, reinforcing the need to verify the particular host port’s supported form factors and rates. A matching physical shape alone does not prove that a module will operate correctly in a port.
How to check whether an SFP module will work
Compatibility depends on the equipment and the link you intend to build. Before selecting a module or cable, confirm:

- Data Rate: 1.25Gb/s
- Interface: RJ-45
- Cable Type: CAT.5e
- Reach: up to 100 meters transmission over CAT.5e
- Wide Compatibility - for Cisco, Cisco Meraki, Ubiquiti, Fortinet, D-Link, Supermicro, TP-Link, Broadcom, Linksys, TP-Link TL-SM331T and Other Open Switches.
- The exact switch, router, or other host model and the specification for the port you plan to use.
- Which form factors and signaling rates that port supports.
- Whether the connection is electrical/copper or optical.
- For an optical link, the transceiver type at each end, fiber type, connector, and required reach.
- Whether the equipment requires a vendor-coded or otherwise specifically qualified module.
For optical connections, choose a patch cable to match the transceivers rather than choosing by the SFP label alone. NVIDIA’s guide notes that cable choice depends on the transceivers. Exact compatibility cannot be determined without the host model and port specification.

Use the equipment manufacturer’s documentation to confirm supported modules, port rates, and qualification requirements. For standards context, consult SNIA’s SFF specification catalog, which identifies INF-8074 for the SFP transceiver and lists separate SFP+ documents. NVIDIA’s cable and transceiver guide provides practical context on terminology and matching optical patch cables to transceivers.
