1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo set up visual voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy S23, open the voicemail app supported by your carrier and follow its prompts. The S23 does not have one universal visual-voicemail switch: availability and setup depend on your carrier, region, line eligibility, app, and software. Samsung notes that voicemail options vary by carrier; contact yours if the app or feature is missing.
Choose the voicemail option your carrier supports
Visual voicemail presents messages in an app so you can select and manage them without listening to every message in sequence. Basic voicemail, by contrast, is accessed through a dial-in mailbox. A Galaxy S23 can use a carrier’s voicemail app, or—in supported cases—the visual voicemail feature in Google’s Phone app. Neither option is guaranteed for every carrier, region, or plan.

| Option | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier voicemail app | Provides the carrier’s supported visual inbox and related controls. | Use the app and setup flow your carrier specifies. Google says visual voicemail in its Phone app turns off when a carrier voicemail app is used. |
| Google Phone visual voicemail | Shows voicemail in the Phone app when supported. | Google says availability varies by carrier and region; the setting may not appear for your line. |
| Basic dial-in voicemail | Lets you call your mailbox and follow voice prompts. | It is not visual voicemail and does not establish that visual voicemail is available. |
Google lists supported carriers and explains the feature in its Phone app voicemail help. Check the list and confirm line eligibility with your carrier before switching apps.
Set up your carrier’s visual voicemail app
- Open the carrier-provided Voicemail or Visual Voicemail app. Its name and icon can vary by carrier.
- Review the information shown and tap Continue if prompted.
- Grant the permissions the app requests, then review its welcome message and follow the remaining on-screen prompts.
This is Samsung’s general setup approach; the exact screens and available options depend on the carrier. See Samsung’s Galaxy call-settings guidance. For example, Verizon’s Samsung-specific flow begins in the Voicemail app, then asks the user to tap Continue, review the terms and conditions, and tap Accept. That is Verizon’s flow, not a universal S23 menu path; see Verizon’s Samsung visual voicemail setup instructions.

- Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.
Set up basic voicemail or Google Phone voicemail
Basic voicemail through the Phone app
To create or access a basic voicemail mailbox, open Samsung’s Phone app, touch and hold 1, and follow the tutorial to create a password and record a greeting and name. This sets up dial-in voicemail; it does not enable visual voicemail or prove that your line supports it.
Google Phone visual voicemail
If your carrier and region support the feature, Google’s setup path is Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail > Visual voicemail. Google cautions that using the carrier’s voicemail app turns off visual voicemail in the Phone app to avoid a conflict. If the setting is absent, check carrier support and line eligibility rather than assuming the S23 is misconfigured.

Fix visual voicemail that is missing or not working
- Confirm support and the intended app. Ask your carrier whether visual voicemail is available for your line and region, and which app to use. Samsung says options vary by carrier, and Google documents carrier and regional limits.
- Check the connection. Verizon says its Android Visual Voicemail app requires the mobile data network and does not work over Wi-Fi. This requirement is specific to Verizon’s app; follow another carrier’s instructions for its service.
- Restart the phone. Verizon lists a restart as a possible fix for temporary app issues.
- If you use Verizon, reset its app only if needed. Verizon’s troubleshooting FAQ advises force-stopping and clearing data for the Visual Voicemail app, then reopening it and following the prompts. Verizon says this app reset will not delete voicemail messages. Do not apply this carrier-specific reset path to another voicemail app.
- Check call forwarding. Verizon includes verifying that call forwarding is not active in its troubleshooting steps.
- For missing T-Mobile messages, test the inbox. T-Mobile’s troubleshooting flow starts by checking the voicemail inbox, then leaving and saving a new message as a test. Follow the current carrier-specific steps if the test message does not appear.
- Use dial-in voicemail as a fallback. Call the mailbox using your carrier’s instructions if the visual app is unreachable.
For the carrier-specific steps above, consult Verizon’s Visual Voicemail FAQs and T-Mobile’s voicemail troubleshooting guide. Verizon subscribers can call *86 from their mobile phone for audio-only voicemail. From another phone, Verizon says to call the subscriber’s number, press # after the greeting, and follow the prompts. These routes are Verizon-specific, not universal codes.

Available controls and retention rules depend on the carrier. Verizon’s Samsung Visual Voicemail instructions cover playing messages, calling back, replying, forwarding, archiving, and deleting. Verizon says archived messages are saved to the device’s internal storage and deleted messages cannot be retrieved. T-Mobile says its app automatically saves messages after listening and also states that messages are deleted after a specified period. Check your carrier’s retention policy before relying on the app as a permanent archive or deleting a message; the details are service-specific.

Samsung Direct voicemail is a separate feature, not another name for carrier visual voicemail. Samsung currently states that Direct voicemail is available only on Galaxy devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher, with availability varying by device, software, and carrier. That support information does not establish eligibility for the Galaxy S23. See Samsung’s Direct voicemail guidance.
