To set up Thunderbolt, first confirm that the specific port on your computer and the accessory both support Thunderbolt, then use a cable and connection path that meet their requirements. A USB-C-shaped port or plug identifies the connector, not the features it supports.
Check Thunderbolt support before connecting anything
Look up the exact computer model and port in its manufacturer specifications, or check its port markings. Confirm that the port supports Thunderbolt and note its generation. Do the same for the dock, display, drive, or other accessory: check its input requirements and the capabilities you need, such as display output, data transfer, or charging. Intel’s Thunderbolt technology overview describes the generations and their capabilities.

USB-C is a connector type; Thunderbolt support is a capability that varies by device and port. Do not assume that every USB-C port, cable, dock, or accessory supports Thunderbolt. A newer dock or cable also cannot add a Thunderbolt capability that the computer itself lacks.
Choose the right cable and connection path
Match the cable to the host and accessory, the Thunderbolt generation, the intended data or display features, the cable length, and any charging requirement. Use a Thunderbolt-rated cable for a Thunderbolt connection where required by the devices. Intel specifically recommends a Thunderbolt cable for Thunderbolt Share and does not guarantee that a USB4 cable will work with that application. Apple documents its Thunderbolt Pro cable for compatible displays and external devices; confirm that any cable you select meets the requirements of your particular setup.

For a single peripheral, connect the computer directly to the accessory. For several peripherals or displays, a compatible Thunderbolt dock can provide a single host connection, but the computer, dock, cables, and attached devices must all support the configuration. Check the dock’s monitor support, charging output, ports, Thunderbolt generation, and host compatibility rather than relying on the connector shape alone.
Understand what Thunderbolt generations promise
Intel’s overview lists these standard-level bandwidth capabilities. They are not guaranteed real-world transfer speeds; results depend on the connected devices and workload.
| Generation | Published bandwidth capability | Other listed capability |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderbolt 4 | 40 Gbps minimum bandwidth | Intel’s overview lists support for dual 4K displays and up to 100 W PC charging. These are specification-level capabilities, not a promise for every computer, dock, display, or cable. |
| Thunderbolt 5 | 80 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth; Bandwidth Boost supports up to 120 Gbps for high-volume video traffic | Verify the capabilities of the specific host, cable, dock, and displays; the overview’s figures do not guarantee every device configuration. |
When deciding between setups, compare the host port generation, cable support, dock and display compatibility, charging needs, and the workload. A Thunderbolt 5 cable or dock does not upgrade a computer that lacks the corresponding host capability.

Displays and adapters
Connect the display directly or through a compatible dock, using an adapter only if the connectors or video protocols require one. Apple says a USB-C or Thunderbolt adapter used with a Mac display must meet DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt requirements. Check Apple’s Mac display compatibility guidance for the exact computer and display models, and verify the adapter and cable specifications as well.

Docks and peripherals
A dock is useful when one computer connection needs to serve multiple peripherals or displays. Confirm its Thunderbolt generation, supported display arrangement, charging output, and port selection against the computer and connected devices. For ordinary peripherals, Intel says Thunderbolt accessories work without installing separate software or drivers; that general statement does not apply to specialized applications such as Thunderbolt Share.
External storage
An external SSD is optional. To use a Thunderbolt workflow, verify Thunderbolt support and the desired capabilities on the computer, drive, and cable. A USB-C connector by itself does not establish that the drive or connection uses Thunderbolt.

Do I need Thunderbolt software or drivers?
For ordinary Thunderbolt accessories, Intel’s Thunderbolt overview FAQ says: “No. You don’t need to install any software or drivers to make things work. Connect your computer with any Thunderbolt™ accessory, and they simply work together.” Thunderbolt Share is a separate Windows PC-to-PC application with its own requirements; it is not needed for routine use of a Thunderbolt display, dock, or drive.

- Two PCs with Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 ports, running Windows 11 or newer.
- Thunderbolt Share installed on both PCs.
- A Thunderbolt cable. Intel does not guarantee USB4 cable operation with the application.
- Intel Graphics driver version 0.101.4826 or higher.
- A manufacturer-provided Thunderbolt Share feature or license on at least one connected PC or accessory.
Intel’s FAQ, last reviewed May 5, 2026, says Thunderbolt Share is offered with new Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 PCs and accessories licensed for the software. The documentation does not establish that owners can buy a separate license for an existing device.
- Download and install Thunderbolt Share on both PCs, following Intel’s installation guide.
- Connect the PCs directly with the Thunderbolt cable, or connect each PC to a dock or monitor using Thunderbolt cables, as supported by the setup.
- Open the application, or allow the connection to launch it. After it detects the connection and confirms a valid license on at least one PC or accessory, the main menu appears.
Fix common Thunderbolt setup problems
No connection or the accessory is not detected
- Recheck the computer’s model specifications to confirm that the particular port supports Thunderbolt.
- Verify the cable’s Thunderbolt rating and compatibility with both endpoints and the intended features.
- Check the Thunderbolt generation and connection requirements of the computer and accessory.
- Confirm that the accessory has any required external power and is connected as its manufacturer specifies.
The display is blank or limited
- Check that the computer port supports the required display output and that the display’s input and cable support the video connection.
- Confirm that any adapter meets the required video protocol, including DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt requirements when applicable.
- For a Mac, verify compatibility for the exact Mac and display models using Apple’s display guidance.
- If using a dock, check its supported display configuration and the host’s display capabilities.
Thunderbolt Share will not launch or connect
- Check that both PCs run Windows 11 or newer and have Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 ports.
- Confirm that the application is installed on both PCs and that the Intel Graphics driver is version 0.101.4826 or higher.
- Use a Thunderbolt cable and verify that at least one connected PC or accessory includes the manufacturer-provided feature or license.
Problems persist
Check the computer and accessory manufacturers’ support information for current model-specific drivers and firmware. Intel directs users to obtain Thunderbolt drivers and firmware from the device manufacturer; the correct package can depend on the computer or accessory.
