Add MCP servers with pi mcp add, check them with pi mcp list or the in-session /mcp command, then use codemode when you want the model to compose tool calls and filter their results. The commands below reflect Pi’s rolling latest documentation, not a verified, release-pinned Pi 1.0 snapshot; if a command differs in your installation, check pi --help and the documentation for your installed release.
Install Pi and authenticate
Pi is a terminal coding agent. The project documents a global npm install and standalone binaries, with Linux, macOS, and Windows support; Bash is required. The npm route is a straightforward way to install and update Pi through your existing Node.js package workflow. A standalone binary may suit you better if you prefer not to install it as a global npm package. The documentation does not establish a performance advantage for either route.

Install the npm package globally:

Change into the project directory you want Pi to work in and launch it with

Authenticate interactively with
/loginand select a provider, or set the relevant provider API key in your environment before starting Pi. For example, an Anthropic API key can be supplied throughANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
Provider sign-in flows and API-key requirements vary and can change. Follow the instructions for the provider and account you plan to use; do not put personal credentials in a shared project configuration.
Add an MCP server
Pi’s MCP commands support local servers launched over standard input/output (stdio) and remote servers over streamable HTTP. Choose based on where the server runs: stdio starts a local process, while an HTTP endpoint must be reachable over the network. The current guide says legacy SSE transport is unsupported. These examples show command syntax; the remote hostname is illustrative, not a verified service.
Local stdio server
For example, add a filesystem server that operates on the current directory:

piThe final command starts Pi after the server entry has been added. Treat third-party server packages as software dependencies: check their provenance and permissions before running them.
Remote HTTP server
For an HTTP server, provide its endpoint and, if needed, the name of an environment variable containing its bearer token:
pi mcp add docs --url https://example.com/mcp --bearer-token-env-var DOCS_TOKEN
pi mcp listSet DOCS_TOKEN in the environment used to launch Pi. The sample URL is a placeholder; it does not identify an endorsed or confirmed service.

By default, pi mcp add writes to your user-level configuration at ~/.pi/agent/mcp.json. Add -l to write a project-level entry to .pi/mcp.json instead.

To save a server at project scope, include -l in the add command. For example: pi mcp add -l filesystem -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem .. The project configuration makes a server requirement portable, but does not make its package or behavior safe by itself.
Verify the connection and recover from errors
Run pi mcp list to connect enabled servers and display their state, available tools, and errors. The command exits with status 1 if an entry is invalid or an enabled server cannot connect. In an active interactive session, use /mcp to inspect connections; for a failed stdio server, it also shows the tail of the process’s standard error output.

If a server is missing or disconnected, check its entry with
pi mcp listand inspect the session view with/mcp. For stdio, examine the reported error and stderr tail; for HTTP, confirm the endpoint is reachable and the configured token environment variable is present.Rank #4

Pi’s MCP documentation specifies a 60-second default timeout per request. Progress notifications reset that timer. Transient HTTP connection failures with status codes 408, 429, and 5xx are retried twice; tool calls themselves are not retried because the server may already have completed an action.
Do not assume that repeating a write-like tool call is harmless: first check whether the server performed the operation before trying it again.

Codemode lets the model submit JavaScript that calls Pi tools and models. It is useful when a task requires several calls or when intermediate results can be filtered before the final output reaches the model. For example, a script can gather results from multiple tools and return only the subset needed for the answer.
Scripts run as the body of an async function in a QuickJS sandbox, so await and return work. The sandbox does not provide Node.js APIs, filesystem access, network access, or timers. A script reaches outside its sandbox by calling available tools and models; it cannot use ordinary JavaScript APIs to access the machine or make arbitrary network requests.

Understand tool exposure
MCP tools configured for codemode exposure are available to scripts rather than necessarily appearing as direct tools to the model. A script can find available tools with searchTools(), inspect one with describeTool(), inspect a namespace with describeNamespace(), or consult ALL_TOOLS. The codemode tool description itself does not list codemode-exposed server tools; discovery happens through those script interfaces.
Pi’s settings distinguish two relevant modes:

codemode.mode: "on"keeps declared tools exposed and teaches the model how to call tools from scripts. -

These settings control how tools are presented and accessed; they are not additional installation steps. Pick the exposure approach according to whether tools should be available directly in the prompt, through scripts, or via deferred tool discovery.
Check commands against your installed release
Pi’s online latest documentation is rolling, and the repository materials are not a release-pinned Pi 1.0 reference. The exact 1.0 release history and a version-specific changelog are not established here. If a command, setting, or behavior does not match your installation, use pi --help and consult the docs matching that release.
