To set up Biome for TypeScript, install it as a pinned development dependency, create a project configuration, and use biome check locally and in CI. Biome groups TypeScript with JavaScript under the javascript configuration key. It can provide a unified linting and formatting workflow, but it does not reproduce every ESLint rule or configuration, so treat a switch from ESLint and Prettier as a reviewed migration rather than a drop-in replacement.
Install Biome in the TypeScript project
Run the command for your package manager from the project root. The official quick start uses exact-version pinning so contributors and CI install the same release:

Keep the resulting lockfile in version control. The installation options and pinning guidance are in the Biome quick start.
Create and review the project configuration
Initialize Biome in the repository root with your package manager’s equivalent of biome init. The generated biome.json configuration enables Biome’s formatter, linter, and assist actions. Biome can run without a configuration file, but a project-level config gives CLI runs and editor integrations a shared source of settings.

TypeScript is configured under javascript, because Biome uses that namespace for JavaScript variants including TypeScript, JSX, and TSX. Configuration can be stored in biome.json or biome.jsonc. Review the generated settings against the installed release and your team’s conventions instead of assuming they match an existing style automatically. The configuration guide explains project configuration and file selection; the configuration reference documents available options.
Use files.includes to scope files across formatter, linter, and assist. Individual tools can further narrow their own processing. For rule configuration, the current reference uses linter.rules.preset; the older linter.rules.recommended boolean is deprecated for removal in a future major version. When possible, point editor schema completion at the schema shipped with the locally installed package so suggestions correspond to that version.

npx biome check .To apply formatting, safe lint fixes, and assist actions, run:
npx biome check --write .Replace npx with the equivalent invocation for your package manager if needed. A write run does not resolve every diagnostic: issues without a safe automatic fix still need developer attention. Review the resulting diff before committing, especially when adopting Biome in a codebase with established formatting conventions.
Run Biome in CI
Add a CI job that installs dependencies from the lockfile, then run Biome’s CI-oriented check command:

npx biome ci .This makes CI enforce checks without relying on a developer’s editor save action to format files. Use the same pinned dependency as local development so the CI result follows the repository’s installed Biome release. The quick start documents the install, initialization, and check workflow.
Make Biome the editor formatter
Biome’s language server can provide diagnostics, formatting, and assist actions in the editor. The official editor guide lists maintained integrations for VS Code, Zed, and IntelliJ; Helix can connect directly, while integrations for other editors are community maintained. VS Code
- Install the Biome extension and open the project containing the Biome configuration.
- In VS Code settings, select Biome as the default formatter for the supported files you want it to handle.
- Enable format on save if that matches your workflow.
- If you are moving from ESLint and Prettier, disable or uninstall their editor extensions, or otherwise prevent them from formatting the same files on save.
Two formatters acting on save can produce conflicting changes or repeated rewrites. Make Biome the single formatter for the files it owns, while retaining other tooling only where it is still needed.

Migrate from ESLint and Prettier without assuming parity
Biome offers migration guidance, but its behavior is not identical to every ESLint and Prettier setup. Some ESLint rule options are not implemented or differ from ESLint, and some shared configurations can fail if they expose cyclic references. The migration guide also notes that the Prettier migration command requires Node.js to load JavaScript configuration and does not support configuration written in JSON5, TOML, or YAML. It recommends enabling VCS integration because ESLint and Prettier use VCS ignore files. See Biome’s ESLint and Prettier migration guide.
A practical transition is to make the change on a branch, inspect the generated configuration and diagnostics, and run checks across the files the project intends to include. Decide whether any existing ESLint plugins or rules still provide behavior Biome does not cover, and retain those tools if necessary. Compare the options on rule and plugin coverage, formatter compatibility, migration effort, and editor and CI integration; the cited guidance does not establish a universal winner or quantified performance advantage.
