You can set up a VPN on a Samsung Galaxy phone either through your VPN provider’s Android app or by adding a VPN profile in Settings. The app route avoids entering connection details yourself; manual setup requires the server and credentials supplied by your VPN provider or your workplace or school administrator.

Samsung’s guidance says users connecting through a provider app do not need to follow its manual profile instructions. App steps and available features depend on the provider. Samsung documents both routes but does not identify one as universally better.

Set up a VPN with the provider’s app
- Choose a VPN provider and get its current official Android app and setup directions.
- Install and open the app, then follow the provider’s prompts to configure and connect. The exact screens and features are provider-specific.
Add a VPN profile manually
Get the configuration details first
Ask your VPN provider or your workplace or school network administrator for the required server or profile information, protocol details, and credentials. These values depend on the service or network; do not guess them. Samsung advises contacting the provider if you are unsure what a field requires.
Enter the profile in Settings
- Open Settings > Connections > More connection settings > VPN.
- Tap the three-dot menu or the + icon, then choose Add VPN profile.
- Enter the details supplied by your provider or administrator and save the profile.
- Return to the VPN settings, select the profile, and connect. Android may prompt you for a username and password before you tap Connect; labels can differ on Samsung phones.
Samsung’s support pages document this route, but the menu names and exact steps can vary by Galaxy device and software version. Some devices show More networks instead of More connection settings. If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for “VPN.”

Connect, disconnect, or remove a VPN
On Android, the VPN controls are in Settings > Network & internet > VPN; Samsung’s menu placement may differ. Select the configured VPN to connect or disconnect, or choose the option to forget it if you want to remove the saved connection. If the menu is difficult to locate, search Settings for “VPN.” Android’s guidance indicates a VPN status icon when connected.
What Always-on VPN means
Android offers an Always-on VPN setting for supported configurations. Its availability depends on the setup: Google notes that when a VPN is configured through an app, the Always-on option may not appear in Android’s system VPN settings. Check the VPN controls on your own phone and your provider’s instructions rather than assuming every app or Galaxy model offers the feature.

Android also supports restricting VPN use to apps associated with a work profile. That is a managed-work-phone option, not a required step for setting up a VPN on a personal Galaxy.

Samsung Knox documentation describes enterprise controls such as per-app, on-demand, device-wide, and always-on VPN connections, as well as policies that can block network routes if a mandatory VPN disconnects. These are administrator-managed capabilities and can require compatible VPN clients, Knox tools, and organizational configuration. They are not prerequisites for using a consumer VPN app or adding a basic profile.

Choosing a VPN service
The setup instructions explain how to connect, not which provider offers the best privacy, speed, price, streaming access, or jurisdiction. Compare those claims separately using current provider information and evidence suited to the claim; the setup steps alone do not establish that one service is safer or faster than another.
