Get the window ID with await page.windowId(). If you mean the webpage’s viewport rather than the browser window, use page.setViewport() instead.
Choose the API for the rectangle you need
| API | What it changes | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|
browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, bounds) |
Browser window position, outer size, or state | Requires a window ID; read reported bounds with browser.getWindowBounds(windowId). |
page.resize({contentWidth, contentHeight}) |
Page content area, excluding browser UI | Experimental. A resize event may arrive asynchronously. |
page.setViewport({width, height, ...}) |
Page viewport and device metrics | Does not set an outer-window rectangle. Some changes to isMobile or hasTouch can trigger a reload. |
page.emulate(device) |
Device emulation combining user-agent and viewport setup | Apply before navigation when possible, so the site sees the emulated size during initial setup. |
Puppeteer documents the browser window methods in its window-management guide and setWindowBounds API reference. Match method availability and examples to the Puppeteer version in your project.
Set position and outer window dimensions
The documented workflow uses puppeteer-core, launches Chrome with screen information, creates a window-type page, and gets that page’s window ID. This example sets the window bounds and reads back what Chrome reports:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer-core');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/chrome',
headless: false,
args: ['--screen-info={800x600}'],
});
const page = await browser.newPage({ type: 'window' });
const windowId = await page.windowId();
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, {
left: 20,
top: 20,
width: 780,
height: 580,
});
const bounds = await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId);
console.log(bounds);
await browser.close();
})();
Replace /path/to/chrome with the Chrome executable path for your environment. The bounds object can include left, top, width, and height. setWindowBounds returns a promise that resolves when the command completes; use getWindowBounds when you need the reported result.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Maximize, restore, and inspect state
To change state, pass windowState:
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, { windowState: 'maximized' });
console.log(await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId));
await browser.setWindowBounds(windowId, { windowState: 'normal' });
console.log(await browser.getWindowBounds(windowId));
The guide demonstrates maximized and normal. A window’s dimensions depend on its screen and browser environment; do not assume a universal amount of space is reserved for browser controls.
Set the page content area instead
If the target dimensions mean the web content area, use page.resize(). It is documented as experimental. The guide sets the viewport to null first because a default viewport can constrain the window, then waits for the asynchronous resize event:

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
await page.setViewport(null);
const resized = page.evaluate(() => new Promise(resolve => {
window.addEventListener('resize', resolve, { once: true });
}));
await page.resize({ contentWidth: 600, contentHeight: 400 });
await resized;
console.log(await page.evaluate(() => ({
innerWidth: window.innerWidth,
innerHeight: window.innerHeight,
outerWidth: window.outerWidth,
outerHeight: window.outerHeight,
})));
The documented guide’s sample reports an inner size of 600×400 and an outer size of 600×487. That is an example from its environment, not a fixed browser-UI offset.
Set only the viewport or emulate a device
For viewport-only work, configure it before navigating where possible:

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
await page.setViewport({ width: 1080, height: 1024 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
When connecting to an existing browser, Puppeteer’s current documentation gives ConnectOptions.defaultViewport a default of 800×600. Set it to null to remove that default viewport configuration. Use page.emulate(device) when you need a device’s user-agent and viewport together, and do so before navigation when practical.
What the documented sample output means
The window-management guide shows bounds of 20,20 780x580 normal on its configured 800×600 primary screen. Its additional-screen example reports 850,50 1500x1100 normal on a 1600×1200 screen, then the added screen’s full 1600×1200 dimensions when maximized and 1500×1100 when restored. These values illustrate that example setup; they are not guaranteed Chrome frame measurements for other systems.

Troubleshooting
- The window did not visibly change. Check that you are running a visible browser window; viewport configuration and browser-window bounds are distinct controls.
windowIdis missing or invalid. Obtain it from the relevant page withawait page.windowId()and pass that ID to both bounds methods.- The content size differs from the requested dimensions. Confirm that the target is the content area, use
page.resize(), and account for its experimental status and asynchronous resize event. - The viewport is stuck at 800×600. Review
defaultViewport; it defaults to 800×600 in the current connect documentation. Usenullwhen removing that default is appropriate. - The page reloads after a viewport change. Puppeteer notes that changes involving
isMobileorhasTouchcan cause reloads. Apply device emulation before navigation where possible. - The reported bounds differ from an expected screen size. Treat returned bounds as environment-specific; screen configuration, browser UI, and window state affect the result.
