To use a custom ringtone on a Samsung Galaxy, save a compatible audio file on the phone, then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone and choose it with Add or the plus sign. A song available only through a streaming service cannot be selected directly; it must be a locally stored audio file.
Choose a built-in tone or download an audio file
A built-in ringtone is ready to select and does not require a download. For a custom sound, download an audio file you are entitled to use and save it on the Galaxy device. Samsung suggests checking Galaxy Store or Google Play Store for additional tones, but app and content availability can vary.

Streaming access is different from owning a local file. Samsung’s UK support guide says, “You must have physical song files downloaded on your device in order to set one as a ringtone.” A track cached for offline listening in a streaming app is not necessarily an audio file the ringtone picker can use.

Check whether the audio file is compatible
Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats in its ringtone guidance, and says M4A files need conversion to one of those formats. Samsung’s France guidance specifically describes using a personal MP3. Format support can vary by model and software; the practical check is whether the file appears in your phone’s ringtone picker.

If the file is not listed, verify that it is stored on the phone rather than only in a streaming app or cloud location, and allow file or storage access if prompted. Some media may not be recognized, and compatibility or operator restrictions can affect availability.
Set the ringtone for all incoming calls
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Names or screen order may differ by Galaxy model and software version.
- Tap a built-in tone to preview it, or tap Add or the + icon to browse for a local audio file. Grant access if the phone asks.
- Select the audio file. On supported versions, turn on Play selected highlights only if you want the ringtone to use selected portions rather than start at the beginning.
- Tap Done to save the selection, if that button appears.
Samsung’s current France support example uses a Galaxy S26+ running Android 16 and One UI 8.5; Samsung notes that features and screens vary by model and software version.

Assign a different ringtone to one contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap More options > Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone.
- Choose a tone or add a local audio file, then confirm the selection.
This setting is for ordinary phone calls associated with that contact. Calls made through messaging or other calling apps may use the app’s own sound settings instead.

Fix a ringtone that is missing or silent
The file does not appear in the ringtone picker
- Check that it is a locally stored audio file, not just a streaming-service track.
- Confirm the format is supported by your phone; Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC, and advises converting M4A for its guidance.
- Allow file or storage permissions if prompted, and try moving the audio file into the phone’s local storage.
- If it remains unavailable, the file may not be recognized by that model or may be subject to compatibility or operator restrictions.
The phone does not ring when someone calls
- Raise the ringtone volume and confirm the selected tone is still set.
- Check whether Do not Disturb or a mode is suppressing incoming-call sound; review Modes and Routines if applicable.
- For calls through a video-calling or messaging app, check that app’s audio settings.
- If the phone does not ring for a particular call, check whether the caller is blocked or call forwarding is enabled.
