These settings change how the time is displayed, not the actual clock time or time zone.
Change Windows 11 to a 24-hour clock
- Open Control Panel.
- Under Clock and Region, select Change date, time, or number formats.
- On the Formats tab, set Short time to HH:mm and Long time to HH:mm:ss.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Change Windows 10 to a 24-hour clock
- Open Control Panel.
- Under Clock, Language, and Region, select Change date, time or number formats.
- On the Formats tab, set Short time to HH:mm and Long time to HH:mm:ss.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The Control Panel category label differs by Windows version, but both versions use the same time-format values. The short format displays hours and minutes; the long format includes seconds. Microsoft’s clock-format guidance lists these choices for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Switch back to a 12-hour clock
Return to the same Formats tab and choose h:mm:tt for Short time and h:mm:ss:tt for Long time. Select Apply and OK. Depending on your language settings, the field labels may be localized.

If the clock shows the wrong time
Changing the format only switches between 12-hour and 24-hour presentation; it does not correct the clock’s time or time zone. To adjust those, open Settings → Time & language → Date & time. Microsoft documents the separate controls for setting the time, date, and time zone, including daylight-saving behavior.

Show seconds in the taskbar clock
Seconds are not required for 24-hour time. Microsoft says the system-tray clock normally does not show them; the optional Show seconds in system tray clock setting enables them and uses more power. See Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance for that option.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The PC will continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The end of support does not change the format-setting steps above. Details are on Microsoft’s Windows time, date, and time zone page.
