At Knowledge 2024 on May 7, ServiceNow presented the Now Platform as an enterprise AI platform, with generative AI built into workflows through Now Assist and its Now AI model. For IT operations teams, the most relevant capability was Now Assist for ITOM AIOps: AI support for understanding and grouping alerts, investigating incidents, assessing possible causes, and identifying next steps. These were vendor-announced capabilities, not independently verified productivity results.

What ServiceNow announced at Knowledge 2024

ServiceNow’s May 7, 2024, Knowledge announcement described generative AI as part of the Now Platform rather than a separate, general-purpose chatbot. The company said its multimodal Now AI model was built and optimized for enterprise workflows, with Now Assist features aimed at employees, service agents, administrators, and developers.

The IT operations story followed the Washington, D.C. platform release announced on March 20, 2024. That release introduced Now Assist for ITOM AIOps and enhancements to Virtual Agent. Knowledge 2024 broadened the announcement beyond ITOps, including prompt management for Now Assist in ITSM, knowledge-article summarization, and tools for generating applications and playbooks.

These announcements describe what ServiceNow said it was introducing or expanding at the time. They should not be read as a guarantee that every capability is available today in every region, cloud environment, or customer’s license.

What Now Assist for ITOM AIOps was designed to do

ITOM AIOps is the operations-focused part of the announcement. ServiceNow described Now Assist as applying generative AI to operational data and workflows to help teams move from alert volume toward investigation and action. Its documentation also describes AI features in service mapping, infrastructure diagnosis, and the creation of resolution artifacts.

Workflow area What the AI feature is intended to help with What the announcement does not establish
Alert triage Analyze and simplify operational alerts, and group related alerts so operators can assess them more efficiently. A guaranteed reduction in alert volume, time to resolution, or staffing needs.
Incident investigation Assist investigation and support assessment of possible root causes. That an AI-generated cause is definitive or replaces operator validation.
Diagnosis and service context Support infrastructure diagnosis and service mapping automation. Specific accuracy rates or a result independent of the quality of underlying operational and configuration data.
Resolution work Suggest next steps and generate resolution artifacts to support the work of resolving issues. That recommendations are always safe to execute automatically or appropriate for every environment.

The practical distinction is between assistance and autonomous operations. The announcement supports describing AI as helping people interpret signals and prepare investigation or resolution work. It does not establish that the system can safely make every operational decision without review.

How the broader Now Assist announcements fit together

Knowledge 2024 covered several workflows and roles, not only infrastructure alerts. The table separates the announced areas so teams can identify which parts might be relevant to their work.

Announced area Workflow or user focus What was described
Now Assist for ITOM AIOps IT operations Alert analysis and grouping, incident investigation, root-cause assessment, diagnosis, and next-step support.
Now Assist in ITSM IT service management Prompt management and knowledge-article summarization.
Virtual Agent enhancements Employee and service interactions AI enhancements to Virtual Agent; specific interaction details were not stated in the announcements summarized here.
Application and playbook generation Administrators and developers New generation features for building apps and playbooks.
Strategic Portfolio Management assistance Portfolio management AI assistance for Strategic Portfolio Management; detailed task coverage was not stated.

ServiceNow also announced Government Community Cloud availability and broader automation solutions. Those points concern deployment context and the wider platform, rather than changing the core ITOps alert-investigation workflow.

What the Microsoft Copilot integration added

On May 8, 2024, ServiceNow and Microsoft announced an integration between Now Assist and Microsoft Copilot. They described it as a way for users to move between the two assistants and ServiceNow workflows, bringing both assistants into an enterprise experience.

This made the announcement relevant to organizations using both ServiceNow and Microsoft 365: the concept was to connect assistant experiences across the two environments, not to replace ServiceNow’s ITOps features with Copilot. The announcement alone does not specify current licensing, exact workflow coverage, or how the integration behaves in every configuration. Those details need to be checked against current product documentation and the organization’s contract.

What an ITOps team should check before adopting it

The 2024 announcements establish intended capabilities, not whether they will work well with a particular company’s data or operating practices. A practical evaluation should test the conditions the features depend on and keep human accountability clear.

  • Alert and event quality: Review whether alerts are accurate, consistently labeled, and rich enough in context for useful grouping and investigation.
  • CMDB and service mapping readiness: Check whether configuration items and service relationships are current enough to support the context expected from mapping and diagnosis features.
  • Knowledge quality: Assess whether relevant knowledge articles and resolution records are maintained, since summaries and generated resolution material are only useful when their inputs are useful.
  • Licensing and environment: Confirm feature entitlements, regional availability, and cloud-environment support directly with ServiceNow. The May 2024 announcements do not establish present-day availability for every customer.
  • Review and change controls: Decide which outputs an operator must verify, which recommendations may be used in a runbook, and what approval is required before a remediation changes production systems.
  • Copilot requirements: If users need to move between Microsoft Copilot and ServiceNow workflows, validate the integration’s current scope and prerequisites in the organization’s own tenant and ServiceNow instance.

For a pilot, teams can compare AI-assisted triage and investigation with their existing process using the same kinds of incidents, while recording where the output required correction or additional context. This is an evaluation approach, not a reported ServiceNow benchmark.

What the announcements do—and do not—prove

ServiceNow positioned the features as a way to boost productivity and accelerate value from AI investments. The official Knowledge 2024 and Washington, D.C. release materials describe capabilities and intended benefits; they do not provide an independently audited numeric result for Knowledge 2024 ITOps productivity, cost savings, or incident-resolution outcomes. Treat those benefits as vendor positioning unless a deployment’s own measured results support them.

The durable takeaway from Knowledge 2024 is the direction of the product: ServiceNow was bringing generative AI into operational and service workflows, with ITOM AIOps aimed at alert understanding and investigation. Whether that translates into better operations depends on the implementation, data quality, controls, and the team’s validation of AI outputs.
