Server-Side Mods for 7 Days to Die: What Works Without a Client Install

XML modlets that reuse vanilla assets can change 7 Days to Die server rules without requiring players to install a mod. This guide explains the asset boundary, folder structure, EAC and crossplay caveats, deployment steps, and troubleshooting.

Yes—but only within a narrow boundary. A server can load XML modlets that change game data and rules while reusing models, animations, textures, sounds and other assets already installed in the vanilla game. Players can then join with an unmodified client, and the documented vanilla-entity pattern can keep Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) enabled. The moment a mod adds client assets, alters the client runtime, or relies on compiled code, players generally need a coordinated client installation.

The rule: server data can travel, client assets cannot

“Server-side” does not mean that every file can remain on the server. The practical dividing line is whether the client already contains everything it needs to display and run the change.

An XML modlet can alter values and rules that the game already knows about: entity properties, spawn groups, loot, progression, recipes and balance settings. The dedicated server sends the resulting data to connected clients. Because the clients already own the relevant models, animations, textures and sounds, they have nothing new to download.

The same principle allows a new entity definition when it inherits a vanilla class and uses the existing class’s presentation assets. The 7D2D Wiki describes an entity as server-side when it introduces no new models, textures or sounds; its documented result is that players join without installing the mod while EAC remains on.

That is a compatibility pattern, not a blanket promise. A mod that appears to be “just XML” but points to a new icon, bundle, prefab, sound or other client file has crossed into client-required content.

Which mod types work with an unmodified client?

Mod content Client installation Typical EAC posture What it can safely change
XML-only modlet using existing game assets Not required when every reference resolves to vanilla content Can remain enabled Entity values, spawn groups, loot, progression, recipes and balance rules
New entity inheriting a vanilla class and reusing its assets Not required for the documented server-side pattern Can remain enabled Server-defined health, experience, behavior-related data and spawn rules built on an existing presentation
XML plus custom icon, model, texture or sound Required on each client Depends on the rest of the mod New visual or audio content in addition to data changes
Unity AssetBundle or other packaged asset Required Usually outside the simple EAC-on XML pattern Prefabs, models, materials, animations, effects or other bundled content
Harmony/C# code, DMT or compiled runtime changes Assume coordinated client and server installs unless the author documents a narrower design EAC-off operation is identified for this code layer Runtime behavior that XML cannot express
Overhaul or total-conversion content pack Usually required on both sides Check the author’s exact instructions Large-scale systems and assets that replace or extend the client experience

The official 7 Days to Die mod-structure guidance makes the asset distinction explicit: XML-based changes are pushed from the server to the client, but item icons and asset bundles are not pushed and must already be installed on the client.

Good candidates for no-install servers

  • Changing an existing zombie’s health, damage-related values or experience reward.
  • Adding or editing spawn rules that select classes already present in the game.
  • Adjusting loot tables, progression requirements, recipes, crafting costs or other numeric balance values.
  • Defining a server-side entity that inherits a vanilla class and does not add a presentation asset.

Changes that should be treated as client-required

  • Any custom model, texture, material, animation, sound or item icon.
  • Unity AssetBundles, Resources content or files that alter the client build.
  • UI work that depends on client-only files. No universal server-only exception is established for every UI mod, so follow the mod author’s explicit installation instructions.
  • Overhauls and content packs that change the client runtime or add substantial new content.

Why inheritance is the key to a server-defined entity

A custom entity name alone does not make a mod server-safe. The entity must resolve to a class and presentation that the vanilla client already understands. In the documented pattern, the server extends a vanilla zombie class, changes properties such as health and experience, and adds spawn rules. Rendering still uses the model and animations shipped with the base game.

This approach gives a server owner room to create distinct encounters without distributing a new mesh or animation. It does not provide a way to create genuinely new visuals. If the desired enemy needs a different body, material, attack animation or sound, that requirement must be delivered to every client and the no-install goal no longer applies.

When reviewing a mod’s XML, look for references that resolve to existing entity classes and asset names. A folder containing only XML is not enough evidence; an XML reference can still point at an asset that the client does not have.

Folder structure the dedicated server must recognize

Each mod belongs in its own folder under the dedicated server’s Mods directory. The game’s mod-structure documentation requires ModInfo.xml to be directly inside that mod folder so the game can identify it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A minimal layout is:

Mods/
└── YourServerMod/
    └── ModInfo.xml
    └── Config/
└── (XML patch files, if supplied by the mod)

The exact XML filenames and subdirectories depend on the mod. Do not nest the mod one level too deep—for example, Mods/YourServerMod/YourServerMod/ModInfo.xml—because the server may not discover it. Keep unrelated mods in separate top-level folders; this makes loading errors and rollback easier to isolate.

Deployment procedure for a no-client-install mod

  1. Classify the package. Confirm that the author describes it as XML-only or server-side and that it contains no Resources folder, AssetBundle, custom icon, model, texture or sound. If the package includes compiled code or a client installer, stop treating it as a no-install candidate.
  2. Check the game build. Use the same 7 Days to Die version on the server and the test client. XML paths, mod APIs, EAC behavior and networking expectations can change after an update.
  3. Stop the dedicated server. Installing while the process is running can leave files unread or produce partial loads. Shut it down cleanly before copying the mod.
  4. Create one top-level folder for the mod. Place it under the server’s Mods directory, separate from other mods.
  5. Verify discovery metadata. Make sure ModInfo.xml sits directly inside the new folder. Correct spelling and capitalization matter on hosts and operating systems that treat paths case-sensitively.
  6. Copy the XML files without changing their relative paths. A patch that expects a particular folder or filename can fail if files are moved into a custom layout.
  7. Start the server and read its log. Look for the mod-loading entry and any XML parse, path, duplicate-property or patch-target errors. A server that starts is not proof that every patch applied.
  8. Run the decisive test. Connect with a client that has no copy of the mod. Use a fresh test profile or a controlled save, then exercise the changed entity, loot table, recipe or rule.
  9. Test the failure path. Remove or disable the mod, restart the server and confirm that the world can load without it. This gives you a rollback option before exposing the change to players.
  10. Record the version and configuration. Keep the mod’s release, the game build and any load-order notes together. Recheck all three after game updates.

How to decide whether a package really is server-side

Use the following inspection before installation rather than relying on a mod’s title.

  • File inventory: XML files and ModInfo.xml support the simplest case. .dll files, DMT/Harmony components, AssetBundles, Resources, image/audio files or a client installer indicate additional requirements.
  • Asset references: Search the XML for custom icons, prefabs, materials, sounds or bundle names. A data patch can still require assets even when the package contains mostly XML.
  • Inheritance: For a new entity, identify the vanilla class it extends and confirm that the client already ships the referenced presentation.
  • Author instructions: “Install on server and clients,” “disable EAC,” or “copy files to the game directory” overrides an assumption based on the file extension.
  • Platform statement: A PC dedicated-server test does not establish console or crossplay support.

EAC, compiled code and runtime overhauls

The modding guidance places Harmony and C# in a code layer separate from XML data changes and identifies EAC-off operation for that layer. Treat a compiled-code mod as a coordinated client/server deployment unless its author documents a specific server-only implementation and supported EAC behavior.

DMT-based projects, DLL plugins and total-conversion overhauls can modify functions that the client must execute locally. Even if the server owns the configuration, a player with an unmodified client may fail to connect, be kicked, see missing behavior or encounter a version mismatch. Do not infer EAC compatibility from a mod’s marketing label; use the author’s tested instructions and the server log.

For a server whose priority is frictionless joining, stay in the XML-and-vanilla-assets category. The trade-off is deliberate: you gain no-download access and potentially EAC-on operation, but you give up custom presentation and the deeper runtime changes that compiled code enables.

Crossplay and console support require a separate check

“Server-side” is not a crossplay guarantee. One hosting-provider guide states that any mod disables crossplay, while the official pages used for the documented XML pattern do not establish a universal rule covering every XML-only mod or every game build. Those statements cannot be safely collapsed into a promise.

Before advertising crossplay, verify all of the following for the exact release you intend to run:

  • The dedicated-server build supports the target PC and console combination.
  • The mod author explicitly lists crossplay or console compatibility, not merely “server-side.”
  • The current game build accepts the mod without requiring client files.
  • Your host’s crossplay setting remains available after the mod loads.
  • A console or cross-platform test account can join a live instance.

If any item is unknown, describe the server as PC-only or unverified rather than promising console access. Recheck after platform or game updates because crossplay enforcement can change independently of XML behavior.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

The mod does not appear to load

Check that the folder is directly under Mods and that ModInfo.xml is directly inside it. Correct an extra nesting level, restore the original filename and restart the server. Then inspect the startup log for the mod’s name.

The server reports an XML parse or patch error

Compare the file with the version intended for your game build. A changed element path, attribute name or malformed tag can prevent a patch from applying. Remove the mod, confirm the server starts cleanly, and add it back after correcting one file at a time.

Players are prompted for a download or cannot join

Inventory the package again. Custom icons, models, textures, sounds, AssetBundles, Resources content or client-runtime changes make it client-required. Also check whether another installed mod—not the one you just added—is enforcing a client manifest or version match.

The entity spawns but looks wrong or is invisible

The definition is probably pointing to an asset the client does not own, or it is not inheriting the expected vanilla presentation. Revert to a known vanilla class and remove custom visual references. If a unique appearance is essential, distribute the required client package instead of claiming server-only compatibility.

EAC kicks players after a code mod is enabled

Disable the compiled-code component and retest with XML-only content. Harmony, C# and DMT belong to the EAC-off/code layer identified by the modding guidance. Coordinate the same files and EAC setting on every participant when the author requires it.

A game update breaks a previously working mod

Stop using the old package until its XML paths and APIs are confirmed for the new build. Restore the last known-good server backup, test the update in an isolated instance, and repeat the unmodified-client join test. A successful startup alone does not prove that the gameplay patch still works.

Choosing between no-install convenience and richer content

Priority Prefer Accept the trade-off
Players join immediately with no file management XML-only rules and entities that reuse vanilla assets No custom visuals; limited to data and rules the XML system exposes
Custom enemies, icons, sounds or environments Client/server content pack with explicit asset distribution Every player must install and keep matching files
Deep behavioral changes Harmony/C# or an overhaul with coordinated installations EAC-off or other compatibility constraints, plus version maintenance
Console or crossplay reach Only a mod and host combination that explicitly supports it Additional build-specific testing; “server-side” alone is insufficient

Use five questions for any candidate: Is it XML-only? Does it reuse vanilla assets? Can EAC stay enabled? Does it require server-only or client/server installation? Is support for your PC, console or crossplay target documented for the current build? The best answer depends on which of those constraints matters most to your community.

Operational practices that prevent player-facing surprises

  • Keep a clean, unmodified test client for every supported game build.
  • Stage one mod at a time so a log error has a single likely cause.
  • Back up the world and the server’s Mods directory before updates.
  • Publish the exact mod version, game build, EAC setting and platform scope to players.
  • Do not distribute a server-only claim until an unmodified client has joined and used the changed feature successfully.
  • Retest joining after changing load order, adding another mod or switching host providers.

What “no client install” can and cannot deliver

A properly structured XML modlet can make a server feel substantially different without asking players to manage files. It can rebalance progression, loot and crafting; alter spawn populations; and introduce server-defined entities built on vanilla classes. These are meaningful changes because the client already knows how to render and execute the underlying game objects.

It cannot silently provide a new art package, audio library, icon set or client-side runtime. Those files are not pushed by the server, and the official documentation specifically calls out item icons and asset bundles as client installations. Nor should a server owner promise that a code mod, overhaul or XML package will preserve EAC or crossplay without a release-specific test.

For the narrow goal in this article, start with XML, vanilla inheritance and a clean unmodified-client test. Expand to client/server content only when the gameplay benefit justifies the installation and compatibility cost.

The Bottom Line

The reliable no-install choice is an XML modlet that changes server data or rules and references only assets already shipped with 7 Days to Die. Keep custom assets, compiled code and overhauls in the client/server category, and verify EAC, game version and crossplay behavior with an actual test before inviting players.
