The code narrows the investigation; it does not identify the root cause by itself.
What an unexpected server error means
HTTP status codes in the 5xx range indicate that a server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request. The failure may involve the website’s application or origin server, a gateway or proxy between servers, or an upstream service. The status code describes the class of failure—not necessarily the component or setting that caused it.

That is why a generic error page cannot tell you, on its own, whether the site is overloaded, its application has failed, or a connection between services has broken. A website may also work for some visitors while failing for others.
How 500, 502, 503 and 504 differ
| Code | Standard meaning | First place to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Internal Server Error | The server encountered an unexpected condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request. | Application and server logs, configuration, and resource conditions. |
| 502 Bad Gateway | A gateway or proxy received an invalid response from an upstream server. | The upstream response and the connection between gateway and origin. |
| 503 Service Unavailable | The server is temporarily unable to handle the request, potentially because of overload or scheduled maintenance. | Capacity and maintenance status; check for a Retry-After header. |
| 504 Gateway Timeout | A gateway or proxy did not receive an upstream response in time. | Upstream availability, response latency, and timeout behavior. |
These definitions come from the IETF’s RFC 9110. Error pages and diagnostic details vary by server, proxy, and provider, so the appearance of a page does not reliably identify who generated it.

Why these errors happen
Possible causes of a 500
A 500 is intentionally generic. Possible causes include incorrect server configuration, an out-of-memory condition, an unhandled application exception, or improper file permissions. A message such as “Error establishing database connection” commonly points to an origin-server issue, but it still needs to be confirmed against the site’s evidence. These are examples, not a diagnosis or exhaustive list. MDN’s 500 reference describes the status and potential causes; Cloudflare’s 500 guidance covers its own troubleshooting context.
Possible causes of a 502 or 504
A 502 points to an invalid response from an upstream server; a 504 points to a response that did not arrive before the gateway’s time limit. The distinction matters: a malformed response and a slow or unreachable upstream are different symptoms. MDN explains the separate meanings in its 502 and 504 references.
For sites using Cloudflare, its troubleshooting guidance says a 502 or 504 may originate at the origin or at Cloudflare. Cloudflare’s examples of origin-side problems include excessive load, crashes, network failures, or applications and services that time out or are blocked; some provider-generated errors may also involve compression or header problems. These are Cloudflare-specific examples, not universal explanations for every deployment. See Cloudflare’s 502/504 guidance.

A 503 indicates temporary inability to handle a request, such as during overload or scheduled maintenance. If the response includes Retry-After, it may indicate when to try again. A retry can help with a temporary interruption; it does not resolve persistent overload. See MDN’s 503 reference.
What to do as a visitor
- Note the HTTP code, the full page URL, and when the error occurred.
- If the problem appears temporary, try the page again after a short interval. For a 503, follow a supplied
Retry-Aftervalue if available. - Check whether other pages or services load. If only your connection is affected, check your network and any VPN or proxy settings; networking issues can sometimes contribute to 502 or 504 symptoms.
- If the error persists, send the site owner the code, URL, and time it occurred. The root cause usually requires investigation on the server side.
How site administrators should investigate
Start by locating where the response came from, then follow the request through the parts of the system that handled it. The exact log locations and commands depend on the software stack, so these are triage steps rather than a universal repair recipe.
- Capture the incident. Record the exact HTTP code and message, occurrence time with timezone, and full affected URL. These details are also useful when escalating a 5xx incident to a provider.
- Identify the response source. Determine whether the origin server generated the response or whether an intermediary such as a gateway, proxy, or CDN did. Origin-generated 5xx responses may be passed through by an intermediary, so the visible error page alone may not settle the question.
- Correlate logs and changes. Check application and server error logs around the recorded time, then compare with deployments or configuration changes, resource pressure, database connectivity, and upstream-service health.
- Follow the code’s signal. For a 502, examine whether the upstream response was invalid. For a 504, check upstream reachability and latency alongside timeout behavior. For a 503, check whether maintenance or overload is expected and whether the response carries
Retry-After. - Escalate with evidence. If origin logs do not explain the failure, preserve the incident details and contact the hosting, CDN, or other relevant provider. A cause may not appear in origin error logs.
For Cloudflare deployments, its 5xx troubleshooting guidance covers escalation details and notes that the cause is not always visible in origin logs. Its error-response documentation also explains the distinction between Cloudflare-generated and origin-generated responses.
Why the code alone cannot tell you the fix
The same status code can result from different failures, and the responding component may sit outside the site owner’s direct visibility. A 500 does not prove a particular permission or application defect; a 502 does not prove the origin is down; and a 504 does not establish which service or timeout is responsible. Logs, request timing, system metrics, and provider evidence are needed to distinguish among plausible causes.

For visitors, the practical next step is to report a persistent error with its code, URL, and time. For administrators, the next step is to trace the response through the application, origin, gateway or CDN, database, and upstream services before changing configuration.
