The difference is how the two turbochargers are used: a parallel setup has both contribute together, while a sequential setup stages their contribution as engine demand changes. The labels alone do not tell you the exact airflow path, so the useful question is when each turbo receives exhaust energy and supplies compressed air.
How a parallel twin-turbo system works
In a parallel arrangement, two turbochargers contribute to the engine at the same time rather than one being introduced later as a separate operating stage. Designers may divide exhaust and intake routing between cylinder banks or groups, but the split depends on the engine; “parallel” does not guarantee an identical layout on every vehicle. Perkins contrasts parallel turbocharging with series systems, which operate in sequence: Perkins: How series turbos work.
How a sequential twin-turbo system works
A sequential system changes the turbochargers’ contributions across the operating range. In one documented example, Mazda’s 1991 SAE paper on a rotary-engine system describes one turbocharging unit working at low engine speeds and both units working at high engine speeds. The 1994 RX-7 service-manual page identifies primary and secondary turbochargers fitted in line; Toyota’s Supra service manual likewise describes one turbo providing boost at lower engine speed and load, with both contributing at higher speed and load. These examples illustrate staged operation, not a universal valve layout or handoff point.

Sequential, series and compound are not interchangeable labels
Manufacturers do not use one naming convention for every turbo layout. Perkins calls turbos that operate in sequence “series” and contrasts them with parallel systems. “Compound” often describes compressor stages arranged so that one feeds another to multiply pressure; that describes how air is compressed and routed, not simply when each turbo begins contributing. To resolve an ambiguous label, trace the exhaust path to the turbines and the intake path through the compressors.
Some engines combine strategies rather than fitting neatly into one category. BorgWarner describes a regulated three-turbo system with two small high-pressure turbochargers operating in parallel alongside a larger low-pressure stage. Its white paper calls the approach a combination of two-stage turbocharging and parallel sequential charging, and identifies a turbine control valve in that particular system. - Engineered for superior durability, backed by a one year, unlimited mileage warranty. 100% BRAND NEW, premium ISO/TS 16949 quality - no core deposit or return required.
- Guaranteed Exact Fit for easy installation - fits and functions just like OEM! Fits certain CAT C15 ACERT diesel engines, but the only way to 100% verify fitment would be to look up any OEM part numbers off your original turbos.
- This is an exact-fit replacement turbocharger meant to replace the existing turbocharger on your vehicle. The turbocharger's job is to maintain the efficiency and proper operation of your engine. This is not an add-on turbocharger for a vehicle which wasn't equipped with a turbocharger. Please refer to the fitment dropdown on the listing, as well as the provided OE numbers below to make sure this is the correct part for your vehicle

What to compare when evaluating a setup
| Question | What to check | What the examples establish |
|---|---|---|
| Low-speed response | Which turbo or turbos receive exhaust energy and contribute at low engine speed or load? | Mazda and Toyota describe staged examples; neither source establishes a universal response time. |
| Higher-speed airflow | When does the second turbo contribute, and how does the system increase airflow? | The examples describe both units operating at higher conditions, but give no common airflow figure. |
| Transition and controls | Which valves or controls redirect exhaust or intake flow as conditions change? | Control arrangements vary. BorgWarner identifies a turbine control valve for its three-turbo design. |
| Packaging and calibration | How many turbines, pipes, valves and control states must fit and be calibrated? | These are relevant design considerations, but the cited sources do not quantify a general cost or complexity difference. |
| Intended operating purpose | Is the system designed around response, power density, emissions or a wide speed range? | Perkins lists possible benefits of series systems, and BorgWarner discusses a specific diesel application; neither establishes a best choice for every engine. |
Is either setup better?
There is no universal winner in the available evidence. Sequential staging is intended to manage turbo contribution across changing engine conditions; parallel systems have both units contributing together. The result depends on the engine, turbo sizing, gas routing, controls and calibration. Perkins describes reduced turbo lag, improved transient response and increased turbocharger efficiency as potential benefits of series turbocharging, not guaranteed results for every installation. The cited sources do not provide a matched test that supports a general horsepower, fuel-economy, lag, cost or reliability advantage for one layout.

- Find the system-specific diagram or service information. A vehicle’s “twin turbo” badge does not reveal how the turbines or compressors are connected.
- Trace the exhaust route. Determine whether exhaust drives both turbines together or whether valves stage the flow between units.
- Trace the intake route. Check whether the compressors feed the engine in parallel, in stages, or through a combination of paths.
- Check how controls change operation. Look for the valves and operating conditions that govern the transition; do not assume another manufacturer’s arrangement applies.
This distinction matters when comparing specifications or planning parts: the automotive turbocharger is only one part of a system, and compatibility depends on the engine and its complete routing and controls. Cummins describes a turbocharger’s basic role as compressing air flowing into the engine. Cummins: Turbochargers.
