Core supports both consumers and businesses; B2B is for business payers only. Choose between them based on who will pay and whether your product can accommodate the schemes’ different refund protections—not just on which message format is easiest to implement. The European Payments Council (EPC) rulebooks define scheme requirements, while onboarding, API fields and other integration details depend on your payment service provider (PSP).
Core vs B2B at a glance
| Decision point | SEPA Direct Debit Core | SEPA Direct Debit B2B |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible payer population | Consumers and businesses | Businesses |
| Refund of an authorised collection | The debtor may request a refund within eight weeks of the debit. | No scheme refund right for an authorised collection. |
| Unauthorised collection | A refund request may be made within 13 months. | The EPC comparison identifies a 13-month route where the debtor considers the collection not covered by a B2B mandate. |
| Collection submission window | Received by the debtor’s PSP no earlier than 14 calendar days before the due date and at latest one inter-PSP business day before it. | Same window as Core. |
| Latest return settlement | Five inter-PSP business days after collection settlement. | Three inter-PSP business days after collection settlement. |
Timing and refund values in this overview come from the EPC’s 2025 Core rulebook Annex V comparison. It is an overview, not a substitute for the operative rulebook requirements: Core rulebook and B2B rulebook.
Which scheme should your integration use?
Choose Core when you need to collect from consumers
Core is the suitable scheme when your payer population includes consumers. It can also serve business payers, so a business does not have to use B2B merely because it is a company. Core’s authorised-collection refund right is a material part of the decision and may be required by your product or risk model.
Consider B2B for a business-only payer population
B2B is intended for business payers and has a distinct business mandate process. It may suit a business-only collection product if the parties accept that an authorised collection has no scheme refund right. Do not summarize this as “no refunds”: the EPC comparison retains a route for a debtor who considers a collection not covered by a B2B mandate.

Confirm eligibility with the payer’s PSP
Before selecting B2B, confirm that the debtor and its PSP can use the scheme and support the required mandate process. The scheme-level distinction does not establish every bank’s onboarding policy or product availability.
Build around the mandate lifecycle, not just the debit message
Mandate capture, retention, amendment or cancellation, collection submission and exception processing are scheme-controlled lifecycle concerns. A generic stored “bank debit” token is not, by itself, evidence that your implementation satisfies the applicable scheme requirements.

The EPC publishes mandate layouts, e-Mandate guidance and clarification material. Its current scheme materials include Core e-Mandate guidance and B2B implementation-guideline families; use them alongside your PSP’s documentation: EPC SDD Core materials and EPC SDD B2B materials. Exact fields and validations are PSP-specific.
Use the current EPC rulebooks and message guidance
As of 30 September 2026, the EPC lists the 2025 SDD Core and SDD B2B rulebooks version 1.2 as in effect. The 2025 implementation guidelines use the 2019 ISO 20022 message version. For implementation, keep three layers distinct: scheme business rules, EPC message guidance, and the PSP’s own API contract.

The EPC’s technical XSDs instantiate rules for validation; they are not production schemas. The EPC’s 2025 rulebooks version 1.2 delayed the planned end date for unstructured payer and payee address formats. In its September 2026 clarification paper, the EPC removed the previously communicated 15 November 2026 cutoff and said it would determine a new date later, based on market and payment-industry developments. Structured and hybrid address formats remain supported choices; there is no replacement cutoff date established in the cited clarification.
Accept structured and hybrid addresses, and make validation rules configurable so a future EPC rulebook or PSP notice can be applied without redesigning the integration. The EPC’s clarification paper says: “The EPC will determine a new end date for this specific address format in due course based on the market and payment industry developments.” See the EPC clarification paper.
Check your PSP contract before production
EPC materials establish scheme-level rules; they do not specify every national clearing convention, PSP onboarding requirement, commercial API field or bank-specific mandate process. Validate those details against the selected PSP’s current integration documentation and the applicable scheme participant materials. The EPC expects the next regular rulebook versions no earlier than the end of Q3 2028, aligned with expected PSR and PSD3 timing; that forecast can change as EU legislative dates are confirmed. See the EPC scheme materials.
