Sensate Vagus Nerve Device Review: Does It Reduce Stress?

Sensate may offer a relaxing sensory routine, but a small manufacturer-hosted pilot cannot establish that it causes stress reduction or predict typical results.

Short answer: Sensate may be a useful relaxation aid for people who enjoy its chest vibrations and paired audio, but current Sensate-specific evidence does not show that it reliably reduces stress. A small, manufacturer-hosted 14-day pilot reported lower self-reported stress; without an established comparison group, it cannot show the device caused that change or predict what a typical user will experience.

What Sensate is and what using it involves

Sensate 2 is a consumer wellness device that rests on the chest. During a session, it produces low-frequency vibrations while the companion app plays synchronized soundscapes, generally through headphones. The app and audio are part of the intended experience, rather than optional extras to the vibration alone. Sensate’s product page describes the current device and its app.

The manufacturer says Sensate does not electrically stimulate the vagus nerve. Instead, it proposes that sound and vibration travel through the sternum and chest and affect the nervous system. That is the company’s explanation of how the product is meant to work, not independent evidence that the device meaningfully stimulates or “tones” the vagus nerve.

Does Sensate reduce stress?

The product-specific evidence located for Sensate is preliminary. A Sensate-hosted report of the “Maastricht Study,” naming Sensate Inc, UK, as the study organization, describes 25 adults aged 25–65 who used the device daily for 14 days and completed self-report questionnaires about perceived stress, anxiety, sleep, and well-being. The report describes statistically significant changes in several measures.

#1 Best Overall
Sensate Relaxation Device – Vagus Nerve Toning for Calm, Sleep & Stress
  • RESONATE YOUR WAY TO CALM – Experience the world's only non-invasive vagus nerve toning device. Using patented infrasonic resonance, Sensate sends gentle, soothing vibrations through your sternum to help your body shift from "fight or flight" to deep relaxation in as little as 10 minutes.
  • NATURAL SLEEP & ANXIETY SUPPORT – Scientifically designed to improve Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and condition your nervous system’s relaxation response. Users report immediate improvements in sleep quality, focus, and overall emotional wellbeing.
  • GENTLE & NON-INVASIVE – Enjoy the benefits of advanced wellness technology without the discomfort of electrical pulses. Sensate uses tactile sound—not shocks—making it a safe, comforting addition to your daily self-care routine.
  • YEAR-ROUND RESILIENCE – Includes 12 months of Sensate Plus for an immersive, premium soundscape experience. Easily activate your subscription by creating an account in the Sensate app and submitting the Redemption Form on our website with your registered email.
  • CLINICALLY DEVELOPED – Based on 30 years of clinical practice and 5 years of R&D, Sensate is a multi-award-winning innovation (The Times Health Tech Invention of the Year) trusted by thousands to manage the modern-day "stress hole."

For perceived stress, the report gives a mean Perceived Stress Scale score of 23.0 at baseline and 16.2 after two weeks. It also says 21 of the 25 participants reported feeling less stressed at the end. These are findings reported by Sensate Inc, UK; the report does not state a year. Read the Sensate-hosted study report and the company’s research page.

The result is encouraging as an initial signal, but it does not establish that Sensate caused the change. The accessible report does not establish a randomized control group, blinding, or independent replication. The sample was small, the period was short, and the outcomes were self-reported. No independent, Sensate-specific randomized clinical trial or independently verified estimate of typical stress reduction is established by the available product-specific material.

How to interpret the vagus nerve claims

The vagus nerve is involved in communication between the brain and organs, and the body’s stress response is complex. Sensate’s marketing explains its approach in terms of vibration and sound acting through the chest; the product does not electrically stimulate the nerve. The available Sensate-specific sources do not independently establish that this experience activates the vagus nerve in a clinically meaningful way.

Evidence about other vagus nerve stimulation technologies should not be treated as proof for Sensate: devices that use different methods are not interchangeable evidence. Likewise, a calming session may feel relaxing without demonstrating a specific nerve effect or treatment benefit.

What the sleep findings do—and do not—show

The same Sensate-hosted pilot report says mean sleep latency changed from over an hour to 25 minutes after the two-week use period. That is a result from the small pilot, not a typical or guaranteed outcome. It does not establish that Sensate treats insomnia or another sleep disorder.

Sensate’s current marketing pages separately claim a 48% reduction in stress over 28 days and roughly 55–60 extra minutes of sleep. These are manufacturer claims, not independent findings, and they should not be confused with the pilot’s reported two-week results. The product page and research page present the company’s current claims.

Who might find Sensate worthwhile?

Sensate may appeal to someone seeking a passive, guided relaxation routine and who likes tactile vibration paired with audio. It may be less appealing if you prefer quiet, active breathing exercises or meditation, do not want to use an app and headphones, or are looking for an evidence-established treatment for a health condition.

When weighing Sensate against breathing or meditation tools, compare how much effort each requires, whether you are likely to stick with it, your sensory preferences, portability, total cost, and return terms. No head-to-head comparison establishing that Sensate works better than those alternatives was identified.

Price, guarantee, and health cautions

At the time the US product pages were checked, Sensate 2 was listed for $299 with the device, lanyard, and free app; the company said core use did not require a subscription and offered a 90-day money-back guarantee. Price, availability, and guarantee terms can change, so confirm the live listing and its conditions before buying. Check the current US product page.

Sensate’s help material calls the device non-medical and says it cannot make specific claims about effects on particular conditions. Its safety page reports CE marking and manufacturer-performed safety testing; the accessible page does not provide independent test records. CE marking is not evidence that Sensate reduces stress. If you have a specific health concern, follow the manufacturer’s advice to consult a qualified health professional rather than relying on Sensate as treatment.
