Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless: Pros and Cons

The MOMENTUM 5 Wireless offers a long rated battery life, multipoint, and app-based sound adjustment, but ANC, tuning, and comfort deserve a personal test.

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless is a feature-rich over-ear headphone with a long manufacturer-rated battery life, flexible wired and wireless connections, and sound reviewers describe as expressive. Its main question mark is noise cancellation: Sennheiser advertises a major improvement, but independent reviewers have criticized its real-world ANC. Fit and default sound also divide opinion, so it is a better bet for buyers who can try it or use a return policy than for anyone shopping solely for the strongest noise isolation.

At a glance: the main pros and cons

Pros Cons
Up to 57 hours of playback with ANC enabled, according to Sennheiser’s rating Independent reviewers criticized ANC performance despite Sennheiser’s improvement claim
Two-device Bluetooth multipoint, USB-C digital audio, and analog input Analog listening requires the headphones to be powered on
EQ and personalization options in the Smart Control Plus app Reviewers differed on the default tuning, and some preferred adjusting it
User-replaceable battery, according to Sennheiser Fit and warmth vary by wearer; the design folds flat but not into a very compact bundle
Dolby Atmos spatial audio and a broad supported codec list Not intended for water or excessive sweat exposure

What are the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless’s biggest advantages?

Long stated battery life, with a replaceable battery

Sennheiser rates the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless for up to 57 hours of playback with ANC enabled. That is the manufacturer’s maximum rating, not a guarantee for every listening pattern, volume level, or connection setup. Sennheiser also says owners can replace the battery themselves using a Phillips screwdriver and a new battery. Its support guidance explains the process but does not identify a specific replacement part or seller, so check with Sennheiser for the correct battery rather than guessing.

Useful connection options for work and listening

Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint allows the headphones to connect to two devices simultaneously, which can be useful when switching between a computer and phone. They also support USB-C digital audio and include a 2.5 mm-to-3.5 mm analog cable. The headphones must be switched on for analog listening. Sennheiser says USB-C playback-only mode supports up to 24-bit/96 kHz; the actual codec or connection mode depends on the source device and how you connect.

The supported Bluetooth codecs include SBC, AAC and aptX-family options, including aptX Lossless. A phone or computer must support a codec for you to use it; the codec list alone does not ensure a particular connection will use aptX Lossless. Sennheiser says its BTD 700 adapter can enable aptX with source devices that do not provide it natively. The Smart Control Plus app, available for iOS and Android, provides sound personalization and controls such as ANC and Transparency Mode.

#1 Best Overall
Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless Headphones, ANC, 56 Hr Battery, White
  • Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity 42mm HD 600 inspired driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
  • Reference Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.
  • Best Ever Sennheiser Noise Cancellation: Hybrid adaptive ANC is up to 3× stronger in the midrange than MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, powered by 8 digital microphones for deeper quiet and fewer distractions wherever you listen.
  • Exceptional Battery Life: Enjoy up to 57 hours of playtime with ANC on. A replaceable battery extends product lifespan, helping reduce electronic waste while delivering years of premium sound.
  • Immerse or Stay Aware: Block out the world completely or engage Natural Transparency to hear your surroundings naturally, without breaking immersion. Enhanced Anti Wind Mode keeps outdoor listening clear.

Sound that reviewers found engaging, with room to tailor it

Independent impressions of the sound are not uniform. What Hi-Fi? described the presentation as rich and expressive, while TechRadar praised the stereo field but felt the default tonal balance needed adjustment. Tom’s Guide also reported treble issues with some genres. These are reviewer listening impressions, not findings about how all listeners will hear the headphones. The app’s EQ and personalization options may appeal if you like tuning a sound profile; if you want a reliably satisfying sound straight out of the box, try your usual music before committing.

Feature set for calls and spatial listening

Sennheiser lists four microphones for calls, eight microphones for ANC, adaptive ANC, Transparency Mode and Dolby Atmos spatial audio. These specifications describe the available hardware and features; they do not establish call quality or noise-cancelling performance in every environment. Bluetooth 6.0 is described by Sennheiser as a future firmware upgrade, so do not assume it is enabled on every unit at purchase.

What are the main drawbacks?

ANC performance is the most important caveat

Sennheiser says the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless offers up to three times more effective midrange-frequency cancellation than the MOMENTUM 4. That is the manufacturer’s comparison. Tom’s Guide found ANC poor in its tests, and TechRadar also criticized it. Those reviews do not prove that every person or environment will produce the same result, but they make ANC the feature to scrutinize rather than take on faith. If your priority is reducing aircraft, transit, or office noise, compare the headphones directly in a setting you care about or buy somewhere with a practical return option.

Default tuning may take adjustment

TechRadar’s concerns about upper mids and treble and Tom’s Guide’s genre-specific treble criticism point to a potential weakness for listeners who do not want to adjust EQ. Other listening impressions were more positive, so there is no single objective verdict on tonal preference here. The practical distinction is whether you enjoy using EQ to shape the sound or expect your preferred balance immediately.

Comfort depends on your ears and session length

TechRadar reported cartilage discomfort during extended wear. What Hi-Fi? found the headphones generally comfortable but noticed warmth after about an hour. These are different reviewers’ experiences, not a universal fit result. If you wear over-ear headphones for long stretches, check pressure around your ears and heat buildup during a sufficiently long trial.

Fold-flat, not fully compact; not for wet use

The headphones weigh approximately 290 g according to Sennheiser’s specification page. They fold flat for packing, but What Hi-Fi? noted that they do not fold into a fully compact bundle. Sennheiser says the product is not intended for exposure to water or excessive sweat, so it is not a waterproof or sports-headphone choice.

Who should consider buying them?

  • Good fit: listeners who value long manufacturer-rated battery life, a replaceable battery, multipoint, wired options, and the ability to customize sound in an app.
  • Consider carefully: frequent travelers or commuters who need dependable ANC; the manufacturer’s claim and independent review impressions differ, so test before relying on it.
  • Try before keeping: anyone sensitive to ear pressure, warmth, or default treble balance, since reviewers’ comfort and sound impressions vary.
  • Look elsewhere: people who need headphones for exercise, exposure to sweat or rain, or a small folded travel package.

What should you check before buying?

  1. Check the current local price and stock. Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless in May 2026; its US launch announcement listed a suggested retail price of $399.99. That is historical US launch pricing, not a statement of today’s price or availability. Compare the current offer in your region with alternatives you are considering.
  2. Test ANC in the noise that matters to you. A quiet room is not enough if your main use is a train, aircraft, or busy office. Verify performance directly when possible.
  3. Listen to familiar tracks before judging the tuning. Try your usual genres and see whether you like the default sound or are comfortable adjusting EQ in the Smart Control Plus app.
  4. Confirm device compatibility. Check whether your phone or computer supports the codec you want, and remember that codec availability depends on the source and connection. Confirm firmware and app behavior for the specific unit you buy.
  5. Check the battery replacement route. Sennheiser describes a user-replacement process, but the support material does not identify an exact battery part number or seller. Contact Sennheiser for the proper replacement.
